Fisker is out with its 2021 Ocean electric compact SUV at the CES 2020 being held at Las Vegas. Having been teased before on twitter, about which you can read it here. They have now revealed some of the features, price and specifications the car would carry. Fisker came up first with a very ambitious Karma in 2012 but since then have remained mum relatively as compared to Tesla, who has been wide-mouthed about their quick times, fast charging and range. And very recently with a shock from Tesla’s electric pickup, the Cybertruck. Everyone has only tried to catch up ever since. With Rivian, Bollinger and Neuron EV into the game Fisker excites the electric race even more. Let’s know more what Henrik Fisker is up to with this one.

Starting with the design it is designed by Henrik Fisker himself, who formerly had a stint with BMW. A glimpse of the front reminds us of the Velar here, if the Fisker had a grille. It uses very subtle and timeless lines and is specifically made to look fresh in its entire shelf life. Moving to the back, the tail lamps gives a hint of the ones on Jaguar’s concept C-X75. The SUV is set down low and its wheels well apart from each other, making it wider than high. With its battery pack placed down under, it makes the car’s center of gravity very low helping in exceptional stability. For the reference of size, the car directly goes against the likes of BMW X3 and Volvo S60.

The sensors for automated driving and features like forward-collision warning and adaptive cruise control are mounted un-hidden on the nose of the car. Unlike the ones on the cars nowadays which have the sensors well concealed, the Fisker has it very prominently placed on the hood. One of the remarkable quirks about the hood itself is it does not open doing away with the extra weight from reinforcements needed if it had hood and weight from the latches, strengthening the car’s front structure even more. The front grille has 3D-ed air inlets that are needed to cool down the electronic systems and battery. This realizes the compact SUV with the kind of systems and regulations needed. Ahem, Tesla didn’t bother to explain about all this about the Cybertruck.

Fisker Ocean is aimed at being affordable offered by the company with a flexible lease model and if bought within the first 1000 units the special tax cuts would effectively make it an impressive $30,000 buy. The effective price otherwise would be $37,499, which qualifies it for the sub-$40,000 price Fisker always vouched for. The leasing options would start from $2,999 and $379 every month subsequently. The insurance would be available through Fisker’s own phone app.

There is furthermore news of two more vehicles based on the Ocean’s platform which will see the light of day a few years from now. The Ocean holds an 80-kWh battery pack which will make it good for 300 miles. The car is named “Ocean” because of the major use of plastic reclaimed from the oceans. And they call most of the materials used as “Vegan” because of the sustainability the materials have. There’s a big solar panel on the roof which would give the SUV and additional 1000 miles over a year just by the ample exposure of sunlight. There’s a company’s claim of 0-60 mph time and it is under 3 seconds.

The electric compact SUV would start getting assembled in 2021 and deliveries would hence start in 2022. Just gaining on Tesla with Cybertruck on this one. The car will be available in US markets first and Europe and China subsequently. There was news of the company’s plan to get it to India as well. But highly likely it would fit well there considering a very naive stage for EVs in that market. Fisker plans it big for 2021 Ocean aiming to produce one million vehicles by 2027 starting from 2022.
