Overview

This year, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan gets a ground-up transformation, riding on the company's latest TNGA platform which also underpins the new Camry & RAV4. It is now also powered by a more potent 1.8L 139 ho engine alongside the 2L 169 hp four-cylinder engine. Both the engines return a maximum of 38 MPG and the sporty SE trim also gets an option for a manual transmission.

The Corolla for the 2020 model year is available for sale in 6 trim configurations alongside the Corolla hybrid and Corolla hatchback models. The 2020 Corolla is available for sale at a price starting at $20,595 for its base L trim while the 2020 Corolla hybrid has an MSRP of $24,095.

With the upgraded interior and exterior, it goes up against the likes of the Honda Civic sedan, Mazda 3 Sedan, Kia Forte, and the Hyundai Elantra

Buying Advice

Most variants are sluggish and have a ride quality that trails behind the more refined rivals, therefore, we recommend the 2020 Toyota Corolla SE.

Priced at an MSRP of $23,045, it is powered by a 2.0-liter engine, which offers much better performance. This variant also comes equipped with features like automatic climate control, more supportive front sport seats, and an upgraded infotainment system with a larger screen. However, you can get some good deals with some specific trims of Used Corolla's at your nearest dealer as well.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Currently, in its 12th generation, the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan is built on Toyota's New Global Architecture(TNGA) platform. Filled with cutting-edge technology and impressive driving dynamics and with an irresistible price tag, this taut sedan holds firm its status as the "people's car." Also, it is worth mentioning that the Corolla is also offered in a hatchback design as well alongside the Toyota Corolla hybrid.

The vehicle is offered in two engine options- a 1.8L Inline-4 engine that churns out 139 hp and a more potent 2.0L Inline-4 engine that posts improved performance stats of 169 hp. With the top trim, maxing out under a lucrative price tag of $26,000, the 2020 Corolla sedan is an attractive option, especially, as it comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and Star safety system as standard across all its trims.

The 2020 Corolla sedan comes with an MSRP of $20,595 including the $995 destination charge. With a low 5-year cost of ownership of $25,568 and the high-reliability rating of 80/100 from J.D. Power does make it an exciting offering in the compact sedan segment. The higher resale value and the comprehensive warranty offered by Toyota sweetens the deal even further.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is the brand’s compact sedan which is placed above the subcompact Yaris and below the more premium Camry and Avalon. The 2020 Corolla L sedan starts at a price of $20,595 and goes up to $26,545 for the top XSE trim. It is pretty heartwarming to see that the company decided to equip all trims with the standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and Star Safety System.

The Corolla sedan comes in six trim levels – L, LE, SE, Nightshade, XLE, and XSE. SE and XSE trims are powered by the larger 2.0L engine while the other trims get the smaller 1.8L engine. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard, and you can get the Corolla SE model with a six-speed manual transmission as well.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Toyota now equips the new 2020 Toyota Corolla with a more responsive engine than before for a spirited driving experience. Immediately it becomes a serious rival with its 169 hp four-banger available in SE and XLE. The L, LE, and XSE models depend on the same old 1.8-liter engine, that produces 139 hp & 126 lb-ft of torque.

The power is routed to front wheels through a CVT which has improved a lot over prior generations and an optional 6-speed manual transmission (SE variant) transforms into a fun-filled ride. The suspension has also been upgraded but it only makes the ride much stiffer. Handling has also been improved which helps to make this car feel well sorted in corners and keeps things calm on rougher roads.

The 169-hp 2.0-liter inline-four is good enough to take the 2020 Corolla form 0-60 in 8.2 seconds while decimating the quarter-mile mark in 16.2 seconds while the base engine does it in 9.4 seconds. The brakes provide an ample amount of response and are easy to modulate too. There is also a 121 hp Corolla hybrid which mates a 1.8-liter engine with a 53 kWh electric motor and proves to be very efficient if not powerful.

Compared to its previous iterations the 2020 Toyota Corolla is a vast improvement but yet it ain't that quick. The Mazda 3 sedan gets a mighty 186 hp engine that is far quicker and more agile to drive while the Civic offers performance on par with the Corolla. The 2020 Elantra is more affordable but is almost half a second slower than the Toyota.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

Yes, it may seem counterintuitive but the 2.0-liter inline-four in the 20202 Toyota Corolla is more efficient than the aging four-cylinder which was introduced back in the year 2009. The new powertrain could achieve this because of the following advantages it has over the 1.8-liter engine - a higher compression ratio of 13.0:1, direct fuel injection, high stroke length, and 40 percent thermal efficiency engine technology.

The 2020 Corolla with CVT returns 30 MPG in the city, 38 MPG on the highway, 33 MPG combined, while the Corolla with manual transmission gets 29/36/32 MPG in city/highway/combined. The larger 2L engine is rated by the EPA for 29/37/32 MPG in the same regard. The 13.2-gallon fuel tank aids in offering over 430 miles of range on a single tank of gas, reducing the need for frequent gas station visits.

With either transmission, this new motor feels like a great fit for the Corolla, providing a good amount of power and fuel economy with little fuss or effort, but the manual-equipped version is the most enjoyable. The Hyundai Elantra is the most frugal of the lot while the Mazda 3 compromises in this regard for its sporty driving dynamics. The Civic though offers identical MPG ratings as Toyota, its smaller tank falls short in terms of range.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan sees a major redesign for its interior as well, where the simplistic design has evolved into a high-end product from the Japanese manufacturer. The 2020 Corolla cabin seems smaller because of the black theme. How comfortable is the driver's seat depends on your body type, for shorter and thinner people it is a breeze but taller individuals may have an issue. That said, the cabin feels spacious and there is a nice airy feeling to it with great outward visibility.

For the price you pay, the seating upholstery and surface materials are brimming with quality for such an affordable vehicle and have solid build quality as well. The sport-oriented SE and XSE come with heavily bolstered seats that are not as comfort-oriented as the chairs on offer in the L, LE, and XLE model. The interior upholstery is available in 3 color options while the 13.1 cu-ft of trunk space with a fairly wide opening is on par with the segment standard.

The Honda Civic rules this segment with its abundant space for both the passenger and their cargo. Mazda on the other hand offers similar space as that of the Corolla. The 2020 Elantra has a more spacious cabin in this segment and also offers a marginally larger trunk space as well.

Also new for the Corolla is the 7-inch infotainment system available as standard across the lineup.

Smartphone integration with Apple Car Play and Android Auto also now comes standard. The base 7.0-inch touchscreen has Bluetooth connectivity and voice command and large buttons and knobs beside the screen make it easier to use while on the move. The upper trim model comes with an 8.0-inch infotainment screen

  • 8-way power driver seat and heated front bucket seats
  • Leather steering wheel and leatherette interior upholstery
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Ambient interior lighting & Wi-Fi mobile hotspot

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2020 Corolla looks very sporty with a sleeker design and attractive details. The trapezoidal grille looks neatly shaped between J-shaped bi-LED headlamps that encase profoundly into the front fenders. A beautiful character line emerges from the front fender and ends at the rear decklid where you will notice a narrow and shapely combination of LED taillights. The compact dimensions of the Corolla sedan makes it easy to maneuver in city traffic and tight parking spaces.

The SE and XSE trim arguably looks best, both of which include trim-specific LED accent lighting, smoked taillights, chrome exhaust tips, and tail spoiler. The Corolla Nightshade trim on the other hand a blacked-out exterior trims for a more stealth look. While the lower trims get steel wheels with wheel caps, there are 16-inch & 18-inch alloy wheels available on higher trims, and Toyota offers 7 different colors to choose from for buyers.

All the other rivals have similar dimensions while the Mazda 3 sedan is the longest in the segment which makes up for more legroom. The ground clearance of the Civic is also set higher than all the other rivals, which makes it glide over bumps and potholes with ease. It's impressive to see Honda managing to see open up ample interior space with the same wheelbase and length as that of the Corolla 2020.

Some of the other most noteworthy exterior features of the 2020 Toyota Corolla are:

  • Bi-LED headlamps
  • Rear combination tail lights
  • Chrome lower window trim
  • Heated Mirrors
  • Moonroof
  • Intermittent Wipers

Safety
9.8/10

Toyota is known for its safety and the 2020 Toyota Corolla does not fall short in this regard either. It is no surprise to see that the 2020 Corolla scored a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA and also bagged the 'Top Safety Pick' accolade from the IIHS in the safety crash tests conducted by them.

The Corolla comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite, which includes a number of active safety and driver assistance features. While the 2020 Corolla Sedan is high on standard safety highlights, there are a few driver aids that are available only with the higher trims.

Some of the most eminent standard safety features available in the 2020 Toyota Corolla are:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning with Pedestrian detection
  • Automatic emergency braking with Brake assist
  • Lane departure warning with steering assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Electronic Stability & Traction control

2020 Toyota Corolla vs 2020 Honda Civic

The legendary Honda Civic promises compact-car excellence with its mix of practicality and a fun-to-drive persona. The Civic outranks the Corolla because of its nimbler handling, and its upscale inside. Then again, the Corolla is a better value product, as it is furnished with more standard highlights, and it normally wins higher anticipated unwavering quality evaluations, making it the preferred choice.

2020 Toyota Corolla vs 2020 Mazda 3

Mazda 3 offers sharp looks, a premium interior, and superb driving elements. Neither powertrain will humiliate a rival in a stoplight race, yet the 3 is a star while charging surprising byways. As an everyday driver, it's viable, comfortable, and stylish. The premium cabin, not-so-bad MPG ratings and an impressive styling, makes the 2020 Mazda 3 sedan worth the additional price.

2020 Toyota Corolla vs 2020 Hyundai Elantra

While the low starting price and more features lower down the trim ladder do make it a popular choice in the segment, the Elantra struggles in terms of performance with the sole engine option. It also offers marginally higher fuel efficiency and a more spacious cabin. Add to that the impressive 10-year warranty and high resale value of the Elantra, and you have a winner.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Toyota Corolla has been one of the most top-selling nameplates for Toyota. The Corolla is a simple and sensible car that gets you a host of features at a competitive price. Though the 2020 Toyota Corolla is a great sedan that does everything right, the competitors of the segment pose a serious threat to the same. We'd say that the Corolla is truly a realistic and responsible choice of wheels, yet you should consider the competitors as well.
