The Audi A6 comes in three trims - the Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The Premium and Premium Plus have the option of a 3.2 liter V6 and a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine. The Prestige has the option of a 3.0 supercharged V6 and 4.2-liter V8 engine. The 3.2L engine comes with a CVT and front-wheel drive only. The other two engines come with a 6-speed automatic and the famous Quattro system.

We recommend getting the Premium Plus trim as it comes with all the good features of the Premium trim with the addition to the additional safety features available. We also recommend getting the optional Sport package and the supercharged 3.0-liter engine, so that you get the Quattro system, giving you the best driving dynamics in the industry.  

The 2011 Audi A6 features a 3.2-liter V6 engine making 265 hp and 243 foot-pounds of torque. This engine is paired to a continuously variable transmission, which directs all the power to its front wheels only. Available is a 3 liter supercharged V6 which makes 300 hp and 310 foot-pounds of torque. The option of 4.2 liters V8 is available on the Prestige trim which makes 350 hp and 325 foot-pounds of torque. The two optional engines are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard. 

The base Audi A6 does the 0 to 60 sprint with the 3.2 liters in 6.8 seconds. The supercharged 3-liter engine reduces the time of the 0 to 60 sprint to 5.1 seconds. Well equipped with the 4.2-liter engine, the sedan does the 0 to 60 sprint in 5.7 seconds. All three versions will achieve a top speed of 155 mph.

The most powerful of the above cars is the Mercedes-Benz E350 making 268 hp, which is marginally more than the Audi A6 sedan making 265 hp. The BMW 5 Series is the least powerful of the above, making 240 hp. However, the Audi A6 is the slowest of the above sedans in the 0 to 60 sprint, whereas the BMW steals the show here with a 0-60mph timing of 6.4 seconds.

The 2011 Audi A6 offers 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and a combined mpg of 24. Audi equips the A6 with the 21.1-gallon fuel tank, allowing it to have a range of 443 miles in the city, 633 miles on the highway, and a combined range of 506 miles. When equipped with the supercharged 3.0L engine, it gives an estimated of 18 in the city, 26 on the highway, and a combined of 21, while the 4.2L engine offers 16 in the city, 24 on the highway, and a combined mpg of 19. All A6 sedans, irrespective of the engine, get a 21.1-gallon fuel tank.

The most combined range is given by the Audi A6 of 506 miles, then comes the BMW 5 Series with 462 miles of combined range. The least combined range of the above cars is by the Mercedes-Benz E350 which gives 422 miles. Both Mercedes and Audi offer a bigger fuel tank of 21.1 gallons in comparison to BMW’s 18.5 gallons.

The interior of the Audi A6 can seat 5 and is one of the finest interiors offered for its price tag. The interior seats are 8-way power-adjustable seats with partial leather upholstery. The Premium Plus trim adds on memory function for the driver’s seat. The Prestige trim offers shift paddles and power-adjustable steering wheels into the mix. An optional extra is the Cold Weather package, which adds heating function to the front and rear outboard seats and also a heated steering wheel. The A6 has a cargo capacity of 15.9 ft.³, which can be increased by folding down the rear seats.

In terms of front legroom, the above three guys offer similar space. However, in terms of rear legroom, the Mercedes-Benz offers an inch and a half more than the Audi A6, and the BMW 5 Series offers nearly an inch less. The Audi along with the Mercedes-Benz offers the largest trunk space of the above cars of 15.9 ft.³ Major interior features include-

How intuitive is the Infotainment unit?

Audi offers the A6 with an MMI infotainment system. The system includes Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, USB connectivity, and a voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic and 10 speaker sound system. The same system is featured on the Premium Plus trim, but the Prestige trim offers a Bose sound system with DVD audio capability. Few key infotainment features include-

The exterior of the Audi A6 is simple. But, for the 2011 model year, it gets the optional S line Exterior package on all A6 trims as standard for giving it a sportier appearance. This includes sport front and rear bumpers and accent colored door sills. The standard Audi A6 comes with 17-inch wheels, and this can be upgraded up to 19-inch wheels. As an optional extra, there is the Sport package, which adds 18” wheels with all-season tires or 19” wheels with summer tires. Standard exterior features included are heated side mirrors, LED running lights, and xenon headlights.

In terms of curb weight, the above sedans have a difference of 40 pounds from the lightest to the heaviest. This is a rare occasion where curb weight has a marginal difference. The rest of the dimensions are similar except for the width of the Mercedes-Benz, which is a few inches wider than the Audi and BMW. Major exterior highlights of the sedan are-

NHTSA has not yet crashed tested the Audi A6. We expect the sedan to get good scores in its crash testing. The IIHS has crashed tested the Audi A6 and has given a “good” in three of the tests and an “acceptable” score in one. It has failed to get a Top Safety Pick award for the year. That being said, Audi has installed many safety features, some of them are:

The 2011 Audi A6 is a stylish car and comes with one of the best interiors in its price range. There is a choice of powertrains available with supercharged options and also a V8. The Audi offers the most range of the above cars and also comes with the most space in the trunk as well. With more technology than a local electronics store, the A6 is a good car, and we would recommend keeping it as an option.
