2011 Audi S4 Review

Pros

  • Powerful supercharged engine
  • Good cargo volume
  • Decent fuel economy
  • Dynamic handling
  • Composed ride quality

Cons

  • Artificial steering feel
  • Pricey options
  • The base model is expensive

Audi has ensured that if the regular A4 sedan gets too boring for you, there is always an option and it is the S4.

Overview

The Audi S4 is modeled after the A4 but it’s got a more aggressive body styling, a more powerful engine, and sport-tuned suspension. In the case of the S4, Audi has done something that most automakers continually fail to do so. With a car like this, increased performance, or retaining the virtues of the conventional car, the S4 just does that and more. In its segment, it goes against the likes of the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Volvo S60.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2011 Audi S4 is available in just one trim i.e. Premium Plus trim. This trim features two transmission options, a six-speed manual and a seven-speed automatic, and a standard Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Pricing for the S4 starts at $47,100 and it ranges to $55,000 for a full-loaded S4 with all the optional packages.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The 333-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 offers a lot of power and torque. It’s got 325 pound-feet of torque at 2,900 rpm and goes from 0-60 mph in about 5 seconds. The power and torque are channelized through a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automated manual. Both these transmissions are good and provide smooth and quick shifts. This motor might not sound very exciting at first but extensive changes make this potent motor even better.

The refinement is just off the charts, this engine is sublime. The real magic comes when you combine the throttle response with a hugely expansive torque curve. You get on the gas hard at just 2000 rpm and you’ll be pushed to the back of your seat. Power continues to build in such a linear dramatic way that this car might get you in trouble if you’re not watching the speedometer. The S4’s aggressively-tuned suspension feels nearly as compliant as that of the standard A4.

The powerful Audi S4 takes the lead on the table with its incredible pace. Also, it is worthy to note that it is the most pricey vehicle in this segment. The BMW 335i is the only car close to the S4 in terms of acceleration. Things take a surprise turn in the quarter-mile race as BMW overtakes Audi. Similarly, the Mercedes-Benz C350’s initial start is slow but later increases its speed to level with the S4. The Volvo S60 finds its place in between BMW and Mercedes.

Fuel Economy
7.2/10

For a car with this much power, the fuel economy is really bad. A benefit of the supercharger is that it does not burn any of your fuel unless or until you decide to use it. You can get 18 miles in the city and 27 miles on the highway. With a combined range of 380 miles, this car can be best used for weekend trips.

The Audi S4’s fuel efficiency is good but it cannot beat that of the BMW 335i. It has a stunning combined mileage of 22 mpg. Next in line are the Mercedes-Benz C350 and the Volvo S60. Both the cars offer more or less similar fuel figures but the latter has better driving range thanks to its large fuel tank.

Interior
8.2/10

Audi’s interior quality is class-leading and that is true even for the S4. Open the door and you’ll be welcomed by the leather aura. The S4’s cabin’s quality is really the best in its class. S4 logos are found on all the seats and steering wheel. Beyond omnipresent power, the S4 placates your practical side with a little help from supremely comfortable front seats with adjustable side bolsters.

Since dimensions are unchanged, space is the same as before which is pretty good. The rear seat is also spacious though it could do better with under-thigh support. The trunk is pretty spacious, there’s not a lot of obstructions. When you collapse the seats, you’ve got a ton of usable space.

The Audi offers best-in-class head and legroom in both rows. The remaining rivals offer similar levels of passenger space. When it comes to cargo volume, the Mercedes-Benz C350 is slightly a bit ahead of the competition while the Audi S4, the BMW 335i, and the Volvo S60 share an equal cargo capacity of 12 cubic feet. The elegant cabin of the S4 is spilled out by its luxurious interior features. These include:

  • Ambient lighting
  • Aluminum accents
  • Leather upholstery
  • Leather steering wheel, shift knob, and door trim
  • Heated front seats
  • 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • 60/40 split-bench

How intuitive is the 2011 Audi S4’s infotainment system?

Audi MMI’s system is one of the most intuitive infotainment systems currently in the market. It is basically a four by three aspect ratio but it’s got really good quality Audi is really big on this synthetic world stuff. The graphics generated while using the navigation system are Nvidia and hence the graphics are rendered nicely. A 9-speaker sound system is standard on the S4 but it can be upgraded to a premium surround sound system. Some of the other features include:

  • Satellite radio
  • HD radio
  • Auxiliary audio input
  • Speed sensitive volume control
  • iPod interface
  • Navigation system

Exterior
8.2/10

In terms of exterior, what differentiates the S4 from the A4 is the grille which has chrome vertical slats and an S4 badge while the front bumper has more aggressive intakes. The setup of LED daytime running lights and xenon headlamps look pretty distinctive and quite a head-turner. It’s got 19-inch alloy wheels and the side mirrors have a matte aluminum finish.

At the rear, there are no changes unless you count the lamp design as a new deal. The rest of the exterior is pretty much as standard A4 but given that the A4 is a good-looking car, that’s not a bad thing at all. Even less by faceless standards, the S4 cosmetics really look quite tame.

The nog body of the S4 speaks for its wide wheelbase. Due to this, the S4 flaunts spacious legroom in both rows. Also, its low curb weight plays an important role in its performance. At 4.1 inches, the Mercedes-Benz C550 sits low to the ground. Some of the cool exterior highlights are:

  • Chromed grille
  • bBody-colored door handles
  • Chrome window trim
  • LED taillights
  • HID headlamps
  • Power moonroof
  • Power mirrors

Safety
9.0/10

So far only NHTSA has crash-tested the new Audi S4. It has secured an overall safety rating of four out of five stars. However, it has earned five stars for side-impact crashes. .Apart from that, six airbags are stretched along the cabin of the S4 to protect the heads of the passengers. There are several safety technologies installed in the S4 and these include:

  • Four-wheel anti-lock discs
  • Traction & Stability Control
  • Hill-Start Assist
  • Electronic Brake-Force Distribution
  • Side-impact door beams
  • Post-collision Safety System
  • Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Engine Immobilizer

Final Verdict

The Audi S4 is the only car in this class that can behave like a legitimate luxury sedan around town and then instantly transforms into a proper sports sedan when the mood strikes. Let’s put it another way, it isn’t just a high performing A4, it’s a better one.
