2011 Ford Focus Review

Pros

  • Good fuel economy
  • Good Sync infotainment system

Cons

  • Interior materials are not of good quality

The 2011 Ford Focus is the affordable sedan offering from Ford. The sedan is powered by a 2.0-liter engine making 140hp, and comes with a more eco-friendly version of the same engine, which is only sold only in California, which makes 132 hp.

Overview

The 2011 Ford Focus is the affordable sedan offering from Ford. The sedan is powered by a 2.0-liter engine making 140hp, and comes with a more eco-friendly version of the same engine, which is only sold only in California, which makes 132 hp. The interiors are basic and come with a decent amount of technology, and you can also opt for more with the help of a package. Ford priced this at $17,365 for the base model, bringing this into direct competition with the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2011 Ford Focus comes in 4-trims - S, SE, SEL, and SES. All the trims are powered by a 2.0-liter engine, which for the state of California has managed to get itself a PZEV certification, this comes with marginal lesser power. The manual transmission is available on all trims except the SEL trim. The price of the sedan starts at $17,365 and goes up to $20,395 for the top-end trim.

We Recommend

We recommend buying the SEL trim. Agreed it is higher up in the trim ladder, it does come with a much better set of features and brings in better quality as well. This also includes a lot of technology and with the Ford Sync equipment group. For us, the SEL trim brings the best value for money proposition.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The 2011 Ford Focus sedan is powered by a 2.0L inline-4, which develops 140 hp and 136 foot-pounds of torque. The engine is paired to a five-speed manual transmission, which directs all the power to the front wheels. The same engine has a more cleaner version, which is sold only in California and owns a PZEV certification.

This makes 132 hp and 133 foot-pounds of torque. The SEL trim is the only trim that does come with an automatic transmission as standard. In performance testing, the Ford Focus sedan does the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 8-seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 16.1 seconds. It will then continue to its top speed of 130 mph.

In performance testing, the faster 0 to 60 sprint is done by the Toyota Corolla of 7.9 seconds, and then comes the Ford Focus with a time of 8-seconds.

Ford installed a 13.5-gallon fuel tank, allowing it to have a range of 338 miles in the city, 473 miles on the highway, and a combined range of 391 miles. When equipped with the automatic transmission, the Ford Focus gives 24 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and a combined of 28 mpg.

The most combined range is offered by the Toyota Corolla of 409 miles. Following this is the Ford Focus with a range of 391 miles, and then comes the Honda Civic with the range of 382 miles. The above cars have a similar-sized fuel tank so the difference actually comes in the mpg numbers. When comparing the fuel economy, Toyota is ahead of its two rivals with a combined mileage of 31 mpg.

Interior
7.7/10

The interior of the Ford Focus can seat five occupants comfortably. At night the gauges have a blue glow to them which makes them look very cool. However, the interior is simple and basic. The interior features air conditioning and manually adjustable front row seats with cloth upholstery. The SE trim adds power windows to the above.

The SEL trim brings heated front seats and leather upholstery. The SES trim only comes with leather upholstery and not heated front seats. The Ford Focus sedan comes with a cargo capacity of 13.8 ft.³ which can be extended by folding down the rear seatbacks.

How intuitive is the infotainment unit of the 2011 Ford Focus?

The 2011 Ford Focus sedan comes with a radio with a 4-speaker sound system and has a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. There is the Ford Sync equipment group, which adds Voice-activated controls, real-time traffic, directions assistance, Bluetooth connectivity, and also a steering wheel with audio controls. Another package available is the moon and tune package, which adds a nine-speaker sound system and also a subwoofer. Few key infotainment features are-

  • 4-speaker sound system
  • CD player
  • Radio
  • Available voice-activated controls
  • Real-time traffic updates
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Steering wheel with audio controls
  • 9-speaker sound system with subwoofer

Exterior
9.0/10

The 2011 Ford Focus has a standard exterior styling of a sedan. It does have a good amount of chrome on the grille surrounds to grab a bit of attention, but otherwise, it is your standard affordable everyday sedan. The Focus sedan comes with 15” steel wheels on the base, with the above trims getting alloy wheels of different sizes ranging from 15” to 17” wheels.

Also available only on the higher trims are heated rearview mirrors, fog lamps, and part of the moon and the tune package, which adds a sunroof in the sedan.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the Ford Focus is of similar dimensions to the other two cars. Its length is slightly shorter than the Toyota Corolla but you will not notice it once you put it side-by-side. In terms of curb weight, about 100 pounds differentiate the above sedans, the Ford Focus being the lightest. Major exterior highlights of the sedan are-

  • 15” steel wheels
  • Available up to 17” wheels
  • Heated rearview mirrors
  • Fog lamps
  • Available sunroof

Safety
9.1/10

The 2011 Ford Focus sedan has not yet completed its testing at the NHTSA. The IIHS has tested the Ford Focus and has given it decent scores in the form of two “good” and one “acceptable”. These scores have not been good enough to get a Top Safety Pick. The Ford Focus sedan comes with many safety features, some of them are:

  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Advance Trac (traction control)
  • Electronic stability control
  • MyKey system (safety features for other drivers)
  • Multiple airbag system
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

Final Verdict

The 2011 Ford Focus is Ford’s affordable sedan, and it does come with a good set of features. The engine even has a PZEV certification, however, that only sells in California. The interior space is adequate and offers more trunk space than its competition. It also comes with good safety features, so we will say to keep this car as an option.
