2011 Land Rover LR4 Review

Pros

  • Unmatched off-road performance in its class
  • Powerful engine
  • Easy-to-use electronics
  • Luxurious interior

Cons

  • Weight hampers acceleration and fuel economy
  • Mediocre on-road handling
  • Cramped available third-row

The SUV finds some direct rivalry in the market from the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz M Class.

Overview

The Land Rover LR4, also known as the Discover 4, is a mid-size luxury SUV and was introduced back in 1989. The 5-door SUV is powered by a standard V8 motor and offers excellent off-roading capabilities via the brand’s iconic terrain response system. The SUV finds some direct rivalry in the market from the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz M Class.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The Land Rover LR4 is offered in a well-appointed single trim only but offers some additional packages to further enhance the comfort levels and appeal of the SUV. The price of the SUV starts at $47,650 and increases if you opt for any packages. The available packages include HSE and HSE LUX. The HSE is priced at $4,250 and adds different 19-inch wheels, third-row seats, rear-seat climate control, and a rearview camera. The HSE LUX is priced at $9,150 and adds adaptive bi-xenon headlights, front parking sensors, premium leather upholstery, a center console cooler box, driver-seat memory settings, and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

We Recommend

We would recommend you go for the LR4 along with the HSE trim. It adds a host of practical features at a considerable price.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The Land Rover LR4 is powered by a sizable naturally aspirated V8 motor under the hood. The motor churns out a maximum of 375 horsepower and 375lb-ft of torque. The power and torque ratio of the motor is quite interesting and allows it to do some serious off-roading without breaking a sweat.

The new terrain response system works immaculately and automatically adjusts the powertrain according to the terrain. The terrain response system comes with several settings which include general, grass/gravel/snow, sand, mud and ruts, and rock crawl. The SUV’s fully independent suspension system also incorporates electronically controlled air-springs that adapt to the selected setting to give the best off-roading experience.

Among the rivals, only the BMW X5 comes with a turbocharged straight-6 motor but offers quite a punch and like the LR4, has equal horsepower and torque output. The Mercedes-Benz ML350 comes with a 3.5liter V6 motor but has the least power and torque figures among the rivals on the list.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Fuel economy is not the strongest point of the Land Rover LR4 owing to its big V8. The SUV returns a maximum of 12mpg in the city and 17mpg out on the highways. The combined mpg is rated at a maximum of 14. The SUV comes with a decent-sized gas tank of 22gallons but given its poor fuel economy, it fails to deliver a good overall driving range.

The BMW X5 benefits from a more economical engine design and displacement. It returns a commendable 16mpg in the city and 23mpg out on the highway along with a combined mileage of 19mpg. The Mercedes-Benz ML350 also offers better fuel economy than the LR4 but given the former’s power figures it is quite disappointing.

Interior
8.2/10

The interior of the LR4 isn’t something you’d find on the ultra-luxurious Range Rover SUVs but it doesn’t make you feel left out either. The cabin is full of premium quality materials and there are ample soft-touch surfaces.

The steering wheel, dashboard, and center console feel quite rich and nice to touch. The comfortable rear seats with a stadium-style arrangement and the fixed sunroof further enhance the experience. The front seats are quite comfortable too with power adjustment for both the driver and the front passenger.

The Land Rover LR4 is the most spacious SUV on the list both in terms of seating space and cargo capacity. The BMW X5 is the least spacious one while the Mercedes-Benz ML250 has decent overall interior dimensions among the three on the list.

Infotainment

The infotainment system of the Land Rover LR4 is a standard high-contrast LCD touchscreen unit that is responsible for showing audio controls, climate controls as well as iPod connectivity functions. The system comes with several basic features such as Bluetooth connectivity, a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, an MP3 player. Optional features include the Sirius satellite radio service.

Some highlighted features of the infotainment system are:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • CD Player
  • MP3 Player
  • Harman Kardon Premium Sound System
  • Bluetooth
  • Sirius satellite radio service

Exterior
8.2/10

The Land Rover LR4 comes with a tall and boxy design that has been carried over to some extent from the previous LR2 model. The overall design language gives it a more rugged appeal than the rivals in this segment which complements its excellent off-roading capabilities extremely well.

The new honeycomb front grille, headlights, and vertically stacked taillights look quite distinctive among the crowd and you won’t ever mistake it for any other SUV on this segment. The ground clearance is excellent on the LR4 and it is quite a tall SUV.

The BMW X5 looks more like a soft-roader in front of the LR4 and has a significantly lower ground clearance too but it looks plusher and has better on-road manners than the LR4. The Mercedes-Benz ML350 looks straightforward muscular, which is not present in either of the two on the list but it is the shortest one length-wise among the rivals.

Safety
9.9/10

Land Rover SUVs do have a decent track record of making safe vehicles and the LR4 treads on that path only. The SUV doesn’t have any crash ratings from both the NHTSA and the IIHS. That being said, the vehicle comes with standard airbags all around the cabin to keep the occupants protected and anti-lock brakes are also standard. Parking sensors with rearview camera and swiveling headlamps are the available features on the LR4 which further enhances the safety aspect.

Some highlighted safety features of the SUV are:

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control
  • Active swiveling headlamps
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Rear-view camera

Final Verdict

The Land Rover LR4 is a solid package for its price tag and is set to appeal to those who desire to go off the roads quite frequently without compromising on the comfort levels. The SUV does lack on-road stability and has a very mediocre fuel efficiency when compared to its rivals but shines brightly over them when it comes to off-roading.
