About 2011 RAM 1500

3.7

Overall Rating

The RAM 1500 is a much-revered pickup truck and has managed to climb to a higher position in the segment with its excellent performance, comfort, and appeal. The truck remains unchanged for the 2011 model year.

The RAM 1500 is one of the most sought-after pick-up trucks and has been on sale for a while now. It comes with three engine options – a 3.7 L 6 cylinder and two 8 cylinders – a 4.7 L and a 5.7 L. It is available in a wide variety of configurations, which include both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Features provided are rather basic, but even then, a welcome addition in utilitarian vehicles. It also has good reliability ratings and competes against the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

We recommend buying the SLT trim which starts at $32,165 for the Crew Cab due to its value for money aspects. It features superior technology like Satellite Radio Service, cruise control, as well as interior features like reading lights for not much over the base level ST trim level. The 3.7L base engine in the ST is also a bit underwhelming and not everyone needs the 5.7L engine found in trim levels Sport and upward. Hence the SLT is also in pretty high demand these days. One can then choose whether they want a long bed or short-bed version of the same as well as the option of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

If you don’t need money purchase this truck

Pros

I can drive it, It would be great if I could pay it off

Cons

Too expensive, Not made to last made to sell

4 out of 10 I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle. If you enjoy money in your pocket at it’s a choice. For the long run it will be expensive. I have had two transmissions out in it and other issues that shouldn’t have to vehicle unless an idiot assembled it with their eyes closed.

2011 RAM 1500 Review

Pros

  • Excellent powertrains
  • Good towing capacity
  • Decent fuel economy

Cons

  • Pretty basic features
  • A handful to drive

The RAM 1500 is a much-revered pickup truck and has managed to climb to a higher position in the segment with its excellent performance, comfort, and appeal. The truck remains unchanged for the 2011 model year.

Overview

The RAM 1500 is one of the most sought-after pick-up trucks and has been on sale for a while now. It comes with three engine options – a 3.7 L 6 cylinder and two 8 cylinders – a 4.7 L and a 5.7 L. Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2011 RAM 1500 is available in five different trims; SLT, ST, Sport, Laramie, and Laramie Longhorn Edition. This again is split into three powertrains - a 3.7 L V6, a 4.7 L V8, and a 5.7 L V8. There are RWD and 4WD versions as well as short-bed and long-bed versions. The Laramie trims get features like a 10-way adjustable power driver seat, split-folding rear seatback, 20” wheels, and so on. The base ST Crew Cab is priced at $29,585 while the top-end Laramie Crew Cab 4WD trim is available for $45,810.

We Recommend

We recommend buying the SLT trim which starts at $32,165 for the Crew Cab due to its value for money aspects. Engine and Performance
8.0/10

There are three engine options for the RAM 1500 – these are the 3.7 L six-cylinder and the 4.7L V8 and 5.7 L V8. The 3.7 L V6 is not available in Crew Cab form, and hence the range starts with the 4.7L V8 that produces 310 hp @ 5,650 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque @ 3,950 rpm. The 5.7 L V8 produces 390 hp @ 5600 rpm and 407 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 rpm. These are then paired to 5-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive.

Even though all trucks are almost head to head in the comparison, it is the Ford F-150 that has the best performance credentials of the lot. Its 5.0L V8 is superior compared to what its rivals offer. In terms of 0-60 mph times as well, it has a clear lead that is quite undisputed. The RAM 1500 performs decently in comparison, meeting all its needs with the 4.7L V8, and if need be, there is the option of the 5.7 L HEMI.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

V8 engined trucks aren’t exactly the place where you find the best MPG figures generally, and this case is no exception either. We have the RAM 1500 returning a combined figure of 16 MPG, which translates to 14 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on the highway. But when you add the fact that it has a 26-gallon tank, it returns a decent fuel range between 364 miles to 520 miles on a full tank of gas.

In comparison, all three trucks are again pretty evenly matched. Their low fuel efficiencies get compensated only due to their massive fuel tank sizes. The Ford performs excellently in the tests as the engine is much more powerful compared to its rivals. The Silverado could be termed as the least fuel-efficient but the margin is too small, 1 mpg lesser on the highway.

Interior
7.0/10

The cabin of the RAM 1500 is rather barebones but well laid-out. Even though it does not feature the latest tech that the manufacturer has to offer, the premium trims have a lot of luxury inside their cabins like dual-zone climate control, ventilated steering wheels, and so on. The space offered is, without a doubt, plenty at 41.0/66.0/41.0 inches for front head/shoulder/leg room and seats 5 people with ease. The cargo capacity is minimal inside but there are a lot of small storage spaces.

In comparison, the Ford F-150 has the most spacious rear row seats at 40.3/65.5/43.5 for head/shoulder/leg room and is significantly larger and more spacious for passengers. In all other aspects, the RAM 1500 remains competitive. In terms of cargo space, the Ford is again the best of the lot at a whopping 59.9 cubic feet. The RAM 1500 is at the bottom of the table with a total capacity of 50.3 cubic feet. Some of its interior features include:

  • Cruise control
  • Power Steering
  • Bucket front seats
  • Trip computer
  • Ventilated steering wheel
  • Dual-zone climate control

Infotainment unit

If you are looking at the base level ST trim,, you get pretty barebones features that do not even include satellite radio or USB ports. Climb higher up the trim ladder, and you find features that are easier to live with on a daily basis like DVD Player, Aux input, 10 speakers, and so on. Few standout infotainment features available with the pickup are-

  • Mast Antenna
  • USB connection
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • 6-speaker sound system

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2011 RAM 1500 does not turn a lot of heads but it does look pleasing. It has enough to keep you visually occupied with its hunky looks and wide stance. This design has only been on for two years now after the 2009 redesign. It looks thoroughly functional and impressive in terms of road presence. The optional RamBox that is only available in the Crew Cab models also adds a lot of character to the truck. The RAM 1500 is 229.1 inches long, 79.4 inches wide, and 74.8 inches tall. It has a ground clearance of 8.6 inches and has a wheelbase that is 140.5 inches in the short-wheelbase model. It is also a pretty heavy truck at 5,305 lbs.

The RAM 1500 and Ford F-150 are heavier vehicles when compared to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The Ford F-150 is the longest and tallest car in the segment and measures 243.9 and 75.6 inches, respectively. The RAM is in no race but has a ground clearance of 8.6 inches, which seems adequate for almost all purposes. In terms of wheelbase, the Ford is considerably longer at 156.5 inches. Some standout exterior features include:

  • Dual chrome-tipped exhaust
  • Optional spray in Bedliner
  • Optional RamBox
  • Power Sunroof
  • Two-tone paint
  • 17-inch alloy wheels

Safety
6.0/10

RAM has showered all of its trim levels with adequate safety and that is very evident. The truck is not only well built, but it has also scored Good to Moderate ratings in IIHS crash tests and has scored an overall 3-star rating in the NHTSA Crash test. It features safety tech such as front and rear airbags, 4 wheel ABS, tire pressure monitoring, and so on. Some standout safety features include:

  • Child seat anchors
  • ABS and EBD
  • 4 wheel disc brakes
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Front and side airbags

Final Verdict

Despite hot-headed competition in the light-duty pick-up truck segment, the RAM 1500 is one truck that holds its ground rather well. Even though it loses out to the Ford F-150 in several aspects, it appeals to the price-conscious buyer. All in all, if you don’t want a Ford F-150 at your garage, then Ram 1500 can be that other option.
