Overall Rating
Supercars are the ultimate breed of evolution as they bring extremes of both striking designing along with precise handling and suspension that offer astonishing performance figures, which are bound to bring a smile on your face.
An all-around supercar, the 2012 Audi R8 strikes the perfect balance between power and handling capabilities. Based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, the 2012 R8 has a striking exterior silhouette. Priced at a starting MSRP of $114,200, the Audi R8 is available in both Coupe and Convertible body styles. For the year 2012, Audi has introduced an all-new more powerful 5.2 Litre GT version with a lot of lightweight performance-oriented options. It also gets a color palette change.
The powertrain duties of the 2012 R8 are taken care of by either the 420 hp 4.2L V8 or the much more potent 525 hp 5.2L V10. The car does excellent in the necessary areas: performance, handling, comfort, and usability. The R8 is different from other supercars in a way that it can deliver without having the need to sacrifice other aspects like comfort in view of outright performance. An exotic supercar in a true sense, the R8 is definitely a bargain.
We recommend the Audi R8 4.2 Litre Coupe V8 with manual transmission. It offers really high-class performance, and you can always enjoy the luxury. If performance with city driving is on your mind, then the 5.2L Coupe can be your choice. Otherwise, if you only want performance, then the GT Audi is the choice to go for.

We Recommend
We recommend the Audi R8 4.2 Litre Coupe V8 with manual transmission. It offers really high-class performance, and you can always enjoy the luxury. If performance with city driving is on your mind, then the 5.2L Coupe can be your choice. Otherwise, if you only want performance, then the GT Audi is the choice to go for.
The Audi R8 comes with 2 engine options. The base engine is a 4.2L V8 which makes 430 hp @7,900 rpm and 316 lb.-ft @4,500-6,000 rpm. The other option is a 5.2 L V10, and it makes 525 hp @8,000 rpm and 391 lb.-ft @6,000 rpm. The recently introduced GT trim has a differently tuned 5.2L V10, which makes a whopping 560 hp @8,000 rpm and 398 lb.-ft @6,500 rpm. You can choose from a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automated manual gearbox.
The manual transmission is the preferred. The Audi R8 comes with AWD as standard. The coupe reaches the 60 mph mark in a quick 4.4 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 12.6 seconds.

The GT-R tops the 0-60 mph with a time just under 3 seconds, beating even the Lamborghini. Our R8 though takes a sweet 4.4 seconds to reach the mark, with the quarter-mile coming up in about 12.6 seconds. It has the lowest top speed number. The Gallardo has the highest top speed, and the rear-wheel-drive helps. In such a close battle, aerodynamics plays an important role clearly, and the GT-R and Gallardo have a lot of things going for them.
Fuel economy is probably the last thing to worry about when buying performance cars. But since this is a review, we have to let you know which one might be the most gas-guzzling of the lot. The quality of fuel used plays a major role in the performance of these cars. The R8 offers 11 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway, and 14 mpg combined.

The R8 has the largest fuel tank. It has the least city mileage, but the highest highway range along with Gallardo. The GT-R is the best in the city with its 16-mpg mileage. Surprisingly, the corvette gets the smallest fuel capacity, but it offers a middle ground in terms of mileage in the city as well as the highway in this comparison.
Performance with top-notch luxury is exactly what the R8 offers. Comfortable seats with a driving position that will suit many people for long hours in the driver’s seat is what you get with this supercar. The central console is positioned in a way away from the driver, which makes it hard to reach it. Also, the knob used for accessing navigation and audio controls is very uneasy. However, features such as heated seats and climate control help you relax. Overall, it is a very plush interior to be in.

Most of the cars have a total seating capacity of 2 passengers. Only the GT-R is a 4-seater sports car. The legroom offered is pretty decent in all the cars. In terms of cargo capacity, none of the cars are good for long-distance driving. The Corvette has the most trunk capacity with a total volume of 22.4 cubic feet, adequate enough to fit two luggage bags without any difficulty, which is a rare achievement in the segment. In comparison, only the GT-R enjoys the luxury of an extra row of seats in the rear. Major interior features include-
The infotainment system on the R8 is not the best to use or understand, but it is well equipped with a large number of standard features. Across all the trims, you get Bluetooth connectivity and auxiliary audio input, and the infotainment is connected to a 7-speaker sound system. Although to get the best out of this infotainment system, we do recommend you get the 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system. Some standout infotainment features include:
The 2012 R8 gets full marks in the design segment. It's sporty, charming, and a head-turner wherever it goes. The noticeable difference in styling is across the trims, where you can go from a classic look to an aggressive look. The higher the trim, the sportier it looks. Everything about the car is a design harmony. It is sleek, yet very imposing. It maintains the mid-section engine flair and is complemented by the wide fenders, large air intakes at the front and sides, and the low sloped roofline.
The topless Spyder models are even more attractive. It stays true to its sports car tag with the low height and short wheelbase.

The R8 has a total length of 174.5 inches. It is 75 inches wide and 49.3 tall. The R8 has a wheelbase of 104.3 inches. Though the difference in dimensions and overall proportions may seem microscopic, the GT-R is both the longest and tallest car in the segment along with the longest wheelbase. It is also the heaviest, whereas the Lamborghini is the lightest car in this comparison. Some of the noteworthy exterior features are:
The R8 scores big on safety and also maintains the brand’s reputation for manufacturing pretty safe cars. The car offers Quattro all-wheel-drive, dual front, side, and knee airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control. The optional extras, though not entirely safety-related, can aid the driver in being safe. They are the parking sensors and a rear-view camera. Though standard on V10 models, they are definitely a desired feature for the V8’s too, as they make backing up and positioning the car much easier. Some of the important safety features are:
The Audi R8 might look expensive with its hefty price tag, but as we said, it is a bargain in comparison. It has the potential to win you the drag races, and also impress anyone you want to with its bold but calm design. It is a performance-oriented car but also makes sure that there are no shortcomings in the interiors. You will cherish the luxurious cabin and drown in its comfort. This car is no loser, and in fact, can give competition to cars more expensive than the R8, therefore, it's a recommended pick in the segment.
