About 2012 Ford Edge

4.1

Overall Rating

In the crossover segment, the Ford Edge sits right above the Escape and is a perfect choice for a small family. Thanks to its well-rounded nature, the SUV is one of the top choices in the midsize crossover segment.

Ford has been a big player in the SUV market in recent times, offering around half a dozen SUVs in various segments, sizes, and budgets to best cater to the needs of the American masses. In the crossover segment, the Ford Edge sits right above the Ford Escape and is a perfect choice for a small family. Thanks to its well-rounded nature, the SUV is one of the top choices in the midsize crossover segment.

The design of the Ford Edge is pretty fresh, having been redesigned recently. For 2012 MY, Ford has added a new, powerful, but more efficient turbocharged engine that Ford likes to call ‘Ecoboost’. It also gets aerodynamic enhancements in the front grille to further improve efficiency in the Ecoboost variants. The prices begin at an MSRP of $28,595 and go all the way up to almost $40,000 for the 2012 Edge. The midsize SUV falls in an ultra-competitive segment, wherein it competes with the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan Murano

The mid-level SEL trim offers the best balance between features and value as it offers most of the convenience features and is only diminutively higher priced than the base SE trim. Opting for the AWD setup would add to the practicality of the SUV. The SEL trim hosts features like rear parking sensors, an 8-way power driver seat, dual-zone front climate control, and also includes all the specifications available with the base trim.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Ford Edge continues to be offered in four trims and is available with either an FWD or an AWD drivetrain. As is the case with most Ford vehicles these days, the Edge also comes pretty much loaded, even in the lower-end trims, while the higher-end trims offer a hint of luxury to pamper you even further. The crossover comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 285 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque.

Engine and Performance
7.9/10

The Ford Edge now gets a new 2.0L Ecoboost engine that produces 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, which is available as an option for all buyers. As standard, the 2012 Ford Edge gets a powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 285 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, and both these engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power is sent to the front wheels as standard, with an option for an all-wheel-drive drivetrain available only for the V6 engine. It takes 6.8 seconds for the Edge to achieve 60 mph and the quarter-mile is covered in 15.4 seconds, whereas the towing capacity isn’t up to the mark as it maxes out at just 2,000 lbs.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is both more affordable than the Edge and also has a better performance to offer. It has faster acceleration, taking just 6.5 seconds when sprinting from 0 to 60 mph, and higher towing capacity despite having a lower engine output. The Nissan Murano is the one with the lowest engine output, producing 260hp and 240 lb.-ft of torque, and hence, is the slowest in terms of acceleration. Yet, it has tugging power similar to the Santa Fe, with both SUVs maxing out at 3,500 lbs of towing capacity.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The large V6 engines are never really that efficient, but Ford has done well to extract decent numbers from its standard V6 engine. The EPA rates are 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highways, with the overall fuel efficiency rated at 22 mpg. The turbocharged engine, on the other hand, offers 21 mpg around the town and 30 mpg on the highway, making it easier on the pocket to be used as a daily driver.

The Hyundai is the most efficient car of the lot and also offers a sufficiently large fuel tank to aid in achieving a decent driving range which is over 400 miles. The Nissan is, although the least efficient one here, but packs in the largest gas tank of 21.7-gallons, and hence, has a superior driving range than the other two. The Ford Edge has marginally lower fuel economy figures than the Hyundai but employs a similarly sized fuel tank and as a result, it can cover an almost identical range with minute differences.

Interior
8.1/10

With the modern-looking interior and all the technology on offer, the Ford Edge does look pretty futuristic. The Edge offers supportive seats that offer great comforts on long drives. It resonates with an ergonomic and practical aura and feels tailor-made for family-oriented shoppers with a capacious cabin. There is a decent amount of space for all occupants, with legroom being one of the best in the segment, and although the Vista Roof dual-pane sunroof does eat into the headroom a little, the overall feel of the cabin remains supremely airy and spacious. The liftgate is manually operated and could be difficult to close for shorter drivers, but the trunk capacity is pretty great at 32.2 cu-ft even with the rear seats in use.

The Nissan Murano offers the most amount of space at the front with loads of legroom and headroom, but that adversely affects the rear seat space. The Hyundai too faces a similar kind of issue and it is the Ford Edge that offers the best combination of front and rear seat space while also offering a decently sized trunk capacity. The Santa Fe has a larger boot that has a total carrying capacity of 34.2 cubic feet, whereas the Murano gets a marginally smaller trunk as compared to the Edge. Major interior features include-

  • 10-way power driver seat w/power lumbar and memory function
  • Fold-flat 6-way power passenger seat
  • Leather-trimmed heated front bucket seats
  • Second row reclining 60/40 split fold-flat bench seat
  • Leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel w/contrast stitching
  • Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Fabric/Leather Upholstery

How is the 2012 Ford Edge SUV’s infotainment system?

The interior of the Edge looks modern mostly due to the large 8-inch MyFord touchscreen infotainment system and the 4.2-inch LCD instrument display behind the wheel. It offers an ample amount of connectivity features to keep it up to date with modern times, but the controls need some time to get used to. The black switches on a black background are also difficult to locate without taking your eyes off the road as it is also a tad slow to respond. Few key infotainment features include-

  • 8.0-inch SYNC w/MyFord touchscreen infotainment system
  • 4.2-inch LCD instrument cluster display
  • Voice-activated communications & entertainment system
  • 12-speaker Sony audio system
  • HD radio and SiriusXM satellite radio w/6 month subscription
  • Turn-by-turn navigation with real-time traffic
  • Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and SD card reader
  • Auxiliary Audio Input

Exterior
8.0/10

Similar to the interior, the exterior too looks pretty stylish and modern and has that futuristic vibe to it. The large front silver grille and integrated bull bar in the front bumper offer a very aggressive and bold look to the car. The angular headlamps feel inspired by Honda cars and look a bit on the smaller side. The overall profile is pretty muscular, with smooth flowing lines and curves which are helped by the slightly flared wheel arches and large stylish wheels, which make it look even more premium.

Like a true SUV, the Ford Edge is bulky and its muscularity is indicative of its weight. At 4,056 lbs, the Edge is the heaviest SUV in the segment, yet it remains a compact option that can be easily maneuvered within city limits. It gets a ground clearance of 7.9 inches and has the longest wheelbase of 111.2 inches that helps improving the overall space on the inside.

The Ford Edge and the Santa Fe are pretty much similar in terms of exterior dimensions, but the Ford offers a much longer wheelbase, identical to the Murano, and is also a bit on the heavier side. The Nissan, on the other hand, is a bit longer than the other two and yet weighs less than either of them. Santa Fe offers the highest ground clearance in this comparison, whereas the Nissan Murano is the closest to the ground, although there isn’t much of a difference between them. Major exterior highlights of the Edge are-

  • Bi-functional projector-beam halogen headlamps
  • Auto on/off headlamps w/wiper activation
  • Heated power mirrors w/memory, security approach lamps, and blind-spot mirrors
  • Door cladding & rocker moldings
  • Rear spoiler
  • Unique dual oval chrome exhaust tips
  • 22-inch Polished Aluminum wheels with tuxedo black spoke accents

Safety
8.9/10

Considering it's a Ford, there are not many worries about the safety aspect of the SUV, and the safety test records incline towards the same thought. The NHTSA has rated it with an overall 4-star rating out of the possible 5-stars, whereas the IIHS has made it their ‘Top Safety Pick’ choice, proving its worth in the safety crash tests. There is a long list of safety and assistance features that come with the Ford Edge, including an array of airbags all around the car. Few salient safety features include-

  • AdvanceTrac with roll stability control (RSC)
  • Hill-start assist
  • S.O.S. Post Crash Alert System
  • Personal Safety System
  • MyKey system
  • Reverse sensing park assist system w/Rear-view camera
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Engine Immobilizer

Final Verdict

The Ford Edge is another successful product from Ford in the SUV segment that has made the competition even tougher than before. It is not only competitively priced but also offers loads of positives over the pricier rivals. The addition of a new and efficient turbocharged engine is another positive attribute that creates choosing an SUV in this segment even more difficult for buyers. Overall, this SUV from Ford is a considerable pick for the segment.
