2013 Audi A7 Review

Pros

  • Muscular supercharged V6 engine
  • Large trunk
  • Luxurious interior
  • Good set of standard features

Cons

  • Limited rear headroom
  • Confusing infotainment system

It is powered by a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that makes a stunning 310 horses of power and 325 pound-feet of torque. What really stands out about this car is the sheer quality of the cabin plus the stunning interior design which makes you feel very special.

Overview

Last year, Audi opted to keep the A7 a four-seater. This bittered the souls of the buyers. Hence, for 2013, Audi has decided to step-up the competition. Now, a five-seater configuration is optional for the A7. It is powered by a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that makes a stunning 310 horses of power and 325 pound-feet of torque. What really stands out about this car is the sheer quality of the cabin plus the stunning interior design which makes you feel very special. If you want the luxury of a limousine but want something a bit more sporty and stylish, then the Audi A7 could be your ideal car.

Buying Advice

The Premium Plus trim adds very essential comfort features to the A7. The MMI Connect touchpad and voice-activated navigation system feel modern and futuristic. It starts at around $60,100 and adds a good mix of features compared to the base model. Hence, we recommend you buy the Premium Plus trim.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

Power comes from the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 310 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque and is coupled with an eight-speed automatic. Flatten the throttle, and the A7’s supercharged V6 propels it forward with the gusto, while the transmission delivers quick smooth shifts which is a good thing because with eight speeds, the gearbox shifts frequently. Power finds its way to the ground via Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which greatly improves the A7’s capabilities on slippery roads. In motion, the A7 delivers an appropriately German driving experience.

The ride is comfortable but not overly soft, interior noise is minimal, and the vehicle feels composed and extremely stable. Those who relish the concept of Grand Touring will find a lot to like here. On curvier stretches of road, a precise steering and capable chassis deliver satisfying handling. Drivers who want sportier steering, quicker gear changes, and sharper throttle response can use the standard Audi Drive select system and switch between comfort and dynamic settings.

The underpowered BMW 535i performs the best in the acceleration test, but in the quarter-mile run, the Jaguar XF takes the lead. Both the Audi A7 and the Mercedes-Benz E350 have equal 0-60 mph timings but the former completes the drag test quicker than the Mercedes. When comparing the top speed, both Audi and Mercedes offer the best of 155 mph.

Fuel Economy
8.7/10

Fuel economy numbers for the Audi A7 are decent. In the city, the sedan returns 18 mpg while the highway mileage is estimated at 28 mpg. A combined mileage of 21 mpg is obtained with a driving range of 455 miles in mixed proportions. The fuel economy figures are not the best, but decent for the segment.

The BMW 535i is the most fuel-efficient with 20 and 30 mpg in the cities and highways, respectively. Even the Mercedes-Benz E350 shares the same fuel figures. Next in line are the Jaguar XF and the Audi A7 with 21 mpg combined. When comparing the fuel tank capacity, Mercedes offers the biggest tank of 21.1 gallons, which helps in offering class-leading combined range.

Interior
8.0/10

Typically Audi fashioned, the interior of the A7 is beautifully outfitted with rich-looking wood inlays, pin-brushes aluminum trim, and soft leather. A few of the controls are oddly-placed, for example, the engine start button and radio controls are located to the right of the gearshift lever. For most of the part, the interior seems smartly arranged. Front-seat occupants enjoy ample headroom while those in the back are less fortunate.

Rear-seat legroom is good, but despite a sculpted headliner, headroom is limited for anyone of greater than average height. One thing we can’t complain about is the cargo area as the sedan offers a substantial 24.5 cubic feet of trunk space and rear seats that can be folded nearly flat to accommodate oversize items. The A7 makes a surprisingly good cargo carrier while the large rear opening makes loading oversized cargo exceptionally easy.

All the rivals offer standard five-seating in contrast to A7’s four seats. The BMW 535i offers class-leading headroom with respectable legroom in both rows. Compared to its rivals, the A7’s headroom is quite less but legroom is great. It further excels with best-in-class cargo space of 24.5 cubic feet, while its rivals are stuck below 18 cubic feet. Some of the other interior features include:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • 8 & 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Woodgrain accents
  • 60/40 split-bench
  • Power moonroof
  • Leather upholstery
  • Push-button start

How intuitive is the Audi A7’s infotainment system?

A 7-inch touchscreen display is standard on all models. Visibility is good thanks to crisp and clear graphics. A touch-sensitive pad called MMI touch comes as part of the navigation system. With it, the driver can easily select radio presets and input navigation destinations by drawing letters with their fingers. The Premium and Premium Plus trims get a 10-speaker sound system with a subwoofer, while the Prestige trim gets a 14-speaker Bose premium sound system. Some of the other features include:

  • SiriusXM
  • HD radio
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Bluetooth streaming
  • USB port
  • AM/FM stereo

Exterior
9.0/10

The most distinct aspect of the A7 is its exterior design. The graceful roofline slopes smoothly towards the rear creating a coupe-like silhouette. On upside, it looks great, but on the downside, getting in and out of the backseat can be a challenge. Partially making up for the marginal ingress and egress is a nifty height-adjustable powered hatchback.

Getting in and out of the Jaguar XF is easy as it sits as low as 4.1 inches, and it shares a similar wheelbase with the A7. The Mercedes-Benz E350 is the shortest and lightest vehicle in this segment. When comparing the curb weight, Audi is the heaviest of the lot. Some of the other exterior features of the A7 include:

  • Aluminum window trim
  • Aluminum grille
  • Electronically-controlled rear spoiler
  • Dual exhaust tips
  • HID headlights
  • Power mirrors
  • LED brake lights
  • LED DRLs

Safety
9.0/10

Unfortunately, both NHTSA and IIHS have not rated the 2013 Audi A7 for its safety. But, there are enough safety technologies to keep the passengers away from any kind of crash. Moreover, there are six airbags installed in the cabin. These technologies are regarded as one of the best in the industry. The safety features include:

  • Stability Control
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Traction Control
  • Post-Collision Safety System
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Dusk-Sensing Headlamps
  • Anti-Theft Alarm System

Final Verdict

You’ll definitely love the Audi A7 if you want a sleekly-styled full door that can carry a surprising amount of cargo and effortlessly soak-up highway miles. In terms of resale value, Audis tend to perform reasonably well. Over time, we expect the A7 to be no exception. Except for its high price, the Audi A7 is a perfect family luxurious sedan.
