The 2014 Audi A8 gets an all-new supercharged base V6 motor that is quite praiseworthy. The motor can dish out a maximum of 333 horsepower and 325lb-ft of maximum torque. From the performance aspect, the motor feels quite strong and delivers all the power in a smooth, linear manner. The supercharger ensures there is a negligible lag in throttle response and while all the mechanical ecstasies are going on under the hood, you’d barely feel a thing inside the cabin. In general, the ride quality of the sedan is excellent with the adaptive suspensions and the steering response is right on point. The 8-speed automatic transmission makes the gear shifts virtually imperceptible with smooth and jerk-free shifts.

The sedan can accelerate to 60mph in an impressive 5.3 seconds, making it faster than almost any other V6 powered luxury sedans in the segment.

The BMW 740i has a lively yet sedated driving experience and enjoys a marginally more torque output from its turbo straight-six motor to compensate for the lower horsepower rating. The Jaguar XJ sits at the top of the food chain with a supercharged V6 motor and delivers the maximum power and torque output among the three on the list.

Big and luxurious sedans like the Audi A8 are never focused to deliver exceptional fuel efficiency. The city mileage of the A8 is rated at 18mpg while the highway mileage is rated at 28mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 21mpg.

The BME 740i has the best mileage ratings on paper although by a slight margin only. The Jaguar XJ has a similar city mileage to the A8 and a slightly better, combined mileage as well.

Since the A8 is targeted to offer the best of comfort and luxury, stepping inside the cabin will make you realize that the guys at Audi mean business. The cabin is absolutely mindblowing with superior craftsmanship and exceptional quality of the materials with extreme attention to detail. Almost all the exposed surfaces are covered in leather or soft-touch materials and the treatment follows into the door panels as well. The front seats offer superior comfort especially with the 22-way multi-contour comfort front seats with ventilation and pneumatic massage function.

The rear seats are more comfortable than the front seats and offer some creative comfort features such as a power closing door option and rear-seat media controls. 

The BMW 740i has an equally appealing and comfortable cabin like the A8 but doesn’t offer some features of the A8 such as the power closing door option and the 22.way multi-contour seat with pneumatic massage function. The Jaguar XJ has a classy and comfortable cabin that looks and feels quite different than the German duo.

Infotainment

Audi has carefully packed the infotainment system of the A8 with almost all the features you would expect from a full-fledged luxury sedan. The infotainment system is none other than Audi’s MMI interface with an 8-inch display. The standard features of the system include a navigation system, voice control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a Bose surround-sound system, a CD Player, and an iPod interface. The system also offers the Audi Connect feature, which further offers an enhanced Web-based navigation, information, and WiFi access.

It seems that Audi has reserved all its design cues and styling brilliance for the cabin of the sedan. The exterior of the A8 looks humble and laid-back with a swooping roofline. The front grille looks more ordinary than before but the fine details will go unnoticed if you aren’t looking closely.

The sedan has a longer nose by default to accommodate the massive W12 motor from its L W12 6.3 trim and it gives that necessary big car feel to the sedan.

Like the A8, the BMW 740i also has a more ordinary design but comes with sumptuous exterior dimensions. The Jaguar XJ is perhaps one of the best-looking luxury sedans in the segment. It has a distinctive and aggressive design and looks much better than the German duo in terms of overall design.

As is the case with most luxury cars having hefty price tags, the A8 has not been crash-tested by any of the safety rating agencies. Despite that, the sedan is filled with almost all the modern safety features and includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, full-length side curtain airbags, front and rear-seat side airbags and, active front headrests.
