2013 BMW 7 Series Review

The 2013 BMW 7 Series is no longer the athlete of the flagship luxury sedan class, but its blend of comfort, luxury, and driver involvement gives it wide appeal.

The 2013 BMW 7 Series is no longer the athlete of the flagship luxury sedan class, but its blend of comfort, luxury, and driver involvement gives it wide appeal. The BMW 7 Series delivers some qualities like supreme levels of comfort, cutting-edge technology, and, of course, prestige in spades in a manner that is tailored to the driving enthusiast. Engine specification ranges from a turbocharged 6-cylinder to a monstrous V12 and even a new hybrid.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2013 BMW 7-Series is available with eight different engines, which range from a turbocharged six-cylinder in the 740i, to a twin-turbo V12 in 760Li models. The 7 series is available in two wheelbase lengths. The long-wheelbase one is signified with the letter "L." There are three models 740, 750, and 760 that each correspond to a different engine type. We Recommend

The 2013 BMW 7 Series is a well-recommended luxury sedan and there's plenty to like about the current fifth generation of the 7-Series. 7 Series is the go-to choice for those who wanted performance-oriented handling from their high-end luxury sedans. Nevertheless, the 7 Series absolutely will not disappoint those looking for a confident, comfortable long-distance cruiser.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The 2013 BMW 740 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 that produces 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The 750 gets a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 good for 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque.

BMW estimates that a rear-drive model will go from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The 760Li gets a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 that produces 535 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. BMW offers all-wheel drive on most 7-Series models-this year, with 6-cylinders.

In comparison, it is the BMW 7 Series in the segment that has a bigger power figure on its hand to crise the sedan. Even the torque figures seem big enough for the car to cruise from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, even though the top speed is limited at 155mph. But the 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class performs better with an enhanced torque providing it with a better initial acceleration to reach the finish line before the 7 series.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Across the entire model range, the 7-Series has stop/start, brake energy regeneration, and an economy driving mode. Stop/start turns off the engine at idle-stop lights, for example-and restarts it when the driver moves their foot from the brake. Brake energy regeneration captures some of the kinetic energy that would otherwise be lost in braking and stores it for use by the car's auxiliary systems. The ECO PRO mode on the 7 series once engaged, operates unobtrusively, it manages the powertrain and climate controls to maximize efficiency.

The new V-8 engines, fuel economy numbers are up by about 2 mpg this year for the entire 750i lineup, at 17 mpg city, 25 highway, or 16/24 mpg with xDrive all-wheel drive. The same 16/24 mpg rating is applied to both the short- and long-wheelbase twin-turbo Alpina B7, the high-performance edition of the 7-Series, while the V-12 760Li gets just 13/20 mpg. Fuel Tank Capacity on the BMW 7 series is 21.1 gallons and Premium unleaded gasoline is recommended.

There's little to complain about comfort, as the available 14-way front seats adjust to an absurd degree to ensure comfort for virtually any body type. The rear seats similarly accommodate taller adults, and the extended-wheelbase versions of the 7 Series offer even more legroom and slightly increased headroom. Available rear seats that can heat, cool, and even massage occupants should satisfy even the fussiest passengers.

  • Ceramic-trimmed controls
  • Extended leather interior trim
  • Power rear and rear-side sunshades
  • Massaging front seats
  • 14-way front seats adjust

2013 BMW 7-Series Infotainment

The cockpit is more user-friendly on the 2013 BMW 7 series enabling driver comfort and an amenable fit even for technophobic drivers. The iDrive controller provides a large amount of customization of the car's features. A revised version of BMW's iDrive interface is included in all 7-Series models with a new navigation system that adds 3D elements to the display, with a more powerful 1.3-GHz processor and a dedicated 3D graphics card, improving the overall speed of the system as well.

  • 10-speaker sound system with a CD player
  • An auxiliary audio jack
  • An iPod/USB audio interface
  • HD radio
  • Digital music storage
  • iDrive interface
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity
  • A navigation system

Exterior
8.0/10

The new BMW 7 Series is visually sleeker and more refined, particularly when outfitted with the striking body and wheel modifications of the available M-Sport package. The Alpina B7 offers the ultimate in the individual expression on account of its signature 21-inch 20-spoke wheels, aggressive front-end styling, and prominent quad exhaust pipes.

Optional LED headlights complement the 7 Series’ contemporary architecture, though practical-minded buyers will prefer the standard xenon setup for its superior light output. The 2013 BMW 740i gets a longer wheelbase.

Final Verdict

The 2013 BMW 7-Series is exceptionally fleet-footed for such a spacious, luxurious, and technologically advanced car. Although the 2013 BMW 7-Series looks much like last year's version--it's been lightly made over this year with a new front-end appearance, as well as a new seat design and other interior improvements--it offers new V-8 engines, an updated ActiveHybrid7 edition, 8-speed automatics on every model, and a new entertainment system as well as an improved iDrive interface.
