2013 Chevrolet Impala Review

Pros

  • Available seating for six passengers
  • Powerful and efficient engine
  • Good cargo capacity

Cons

  • The styling needs an update
  • Needs a model refresh

The 2013 Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan that is clearly showing its age. With a model change coming by next year, it is no surprise that it is ignored by the company right now.

Overview

The 2013 Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan that is clearly showing its age. With a model change coming by next year, it is no surprise that it is ignored by the company right now. It plays on a few strengths but largely suffers in most respects when compared to its competitors.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2013Chevrolet Impala is available in three trim levels, with a wide variety of equipment to choose from. The trim levels are called LS, LT, and LTZ. There is the option of a bench seat that brings total passenger capacity to six available in the LS and LT trim levels. There are some options that add desirable features that can be personalized according to the buyers’ needs.

We Recommend

The LT trim is a great buy at its price point of $27,385. It comes with very useful features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler, remote ignition, dual-zone manual climate control, leather-wrapped shift knob, a trip computer, folding seat with center armrest. Buyers can only pick the 3.6 L V6 engine in all trim levels but it is sufficient to meet power demands. Options that we would recommend include the Luxury Edition Package that adds many of the LTZ trim levels desirable features to the LT trim level.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

The Chevrolet Impala is offered for 2013 with only one powertrain. This is a 3.6L V6, which produces 300 hp and 262 pound-feet of torque. Again, a front-wheel-drive is standard, and six-speed automatic transmission is the only one offered.

Even though it has not been updated for a very long time, it still makes the car pretty quick. In fact, one of the only departments one would not hear complaints about the Impala is in terms of its performance.

TheChevrolet Impala is the most powerful full-size sedan when you look at the acceleration figures. But one can see that its competitors are priced much more aggressively. This is due to the fact that they also offer more extra when compared to the Impala. The Japanese and Korean rivals have much less performance in terms of 0 to 60 mph and quarter-mile times despite having almost similar power outputs.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The V-6 engine is a very thirsty drinker and returns 22 mpg combined, 18 MPG in the city, and 30 MPG on the highway. These are pretty low figures and remind us of the archaic technology used in the Impala. A rather large fuel tank capacity of 17 gallons makes sure that it returns a good range - 306 miles inside the city and 510 miles on the highway.

This category almost seems to have no fuel-efficient cars, but the Toyota Avalon is the most fuel-efficient of the lot. It also has a large fuel tank capacity of 17 gallons, which puts it at a safe spot in terms of range. The maximum range can be found in the Kia Cadenza, but that is not due to higher fuel efficiency but simply due to having a large tank. The LaCrosse turns out to be the least efficient with a combined mileage of just 21 mpg with highway figures of just 24 MPG.

Interior
6.6/10

The interiors of the Chevrolet Impala sedan are extremely outdated and miss out on most features that cars today provide. Material quality is also very poor and reminds us of how far cars have come in the past decade.

The space offered is, however, quite generous in the interiors, and the seats are supportive and comfortable. The trunk space is also very decent at 18.6 ft.³. However, one thing that is unique to this car is that it offers optional seating for six people.

All sedans offer seating for five passengers and one can observe that all cars are pretty evenly matched in terms of interior space as well as trunk volume. The Buick offers the least cargo capacity but the difference is merely half a cubic feet. Both front and rear row seats offer excellent head, shoulder, and legroom despite which car you pick. Some of the Chevrolet Impala’s interior features include:

  • Audio and cruise controls on steering wheel
  • 8-way adjustable power front seats
  • Cruise control
  • Dual-zone manual climate control
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Simulated wood trim on center console and doors

2013 Chevrolet Impala Infotainment unit

The infotainment unit you can find in the Chevrolet Impala is nothing fancy. It is a very old studio system that is easy to use but a little bit hard to reach from the driver seat may be due to just how spacious the car is. However, the many buttons and knobs used to control the audio, climate control, and navigation system are still very user-friendly and make one feel right at home next to modern cars. Chevrolet has offered only very basic features. Few standout infotainment features available are-

  • AM / FM stereo
  • Element antenna
  • Six speakers
  • Radio data system
  • Satellite radio service for three months
  • Speed sensitive volume control

Exterior
7.0/10

The exteriors of the new Chevrolet Impala are where its age can clearly be seen. The design is too conservative and is not worth taking a look at these days. The proportions are nice and measure up dimensionally to that of a full-size sedan.

It measures 200.4 inches in length, 72.9 inches in width, and 58.7 inches in height. It has a wheelbase of 110.5 inches.

One can see that the Impala is the longest and tallest sedan, and misses out on the widest only due to half an inch. However, this is a pointless metric because all cars offer a lot of space in the interiors. But it is surprising to see that the Toyota is actually smaller even though its design makes it look bigger. The Buick is the heaviest and is closely followed by the Impala. Some exterior highlights of the Impala are-

  • 17-inch wheels
  • Fog lamps
  • The front license plate bracket
  • Heated mirrors
  • Spoiler

Safety
8.6/10

The IIHS has awarded it an overall rating of ‘Good’ whereas the NHTSA has given it four out of five stars, both being decent ratings. However, full-size sedans have now pushed past this standard and are performing much better. Standard features include anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side-impact airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags. Some standout safety features include:

  • Electronic brake force distribution
  • Four-wheel ABS
  • Rear child safety door locks
  • Daytime running lights
  • Rear three-point seatbelts
  • Post-collision safety system
  • Front and rear airbags, side airbags
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Traction and stability control

Final Verdict

The 2013 Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan that offers an excellent powertrain and lots of interior space. However, it is now an aging design and certainly has a lot of places where it can improve. With a newer model coming next year and the current car being severely defeated by its competitors, it is not one we would pick.
