The Chevrolet Traverse is offered in a total of four trim levels starting from the LS trim. The powertrain option remains standard while the range-topping LTZ trim gets a slight power bump from the same V6 motor. The Chevrolet TGraverse is powered by a standard 3.6liter LLT V6 motor. It has been tuned to generate a maximum of 281 horsepower and 266lb-ft of torque. The power and torque figures are just about average for the SUV and might feel underpowered in some instances. Apart from that, the motor is quite refined and provides an effortless city driving experience along with a relaxed highway cruising too. The standard 6-speed automatic transmission does a good job by shifting at the right time and downshifting quickly the moment you need to make a quick overtake. Handling is on par with the rivals and the ride quality is great as well.

The Ford Explorer has a higher horsepower output but a lower torque count than the Traverse. The Toyota Highlander is the least powerful SUV on the lot, making the Traverse and the Explorer a pair of strong contenders.

The fuel economy of the Chevrolet Traverse is decent art the most but is at par with the rivals in the segment. The city mileage of the SUV is rated at 17mpg while the highway mileage is rated at 24mpg. The combined mileage is a decent 19mpg.

The Ford Explorer has identical mileage figures as the Traverse and is slightly better than the latter considering the power figures. The Toyota Highlander has a slightly better city and combined mileage than the Traverse and the Explorer.

The design upgrade for the current model year made the interior of the Chevrolet Traverse more attractive than before. Inside you’ll find an abundance of soft-padding on most of the exposed surfaces but the overall feel lacks the premium touch which might be a turn down for some buyers.

The rear visibility is heavily restricted owing to the small rear windshield but the rearview camera helps to quite an extent. The front row passengers get the most comfortable set of seats in the entire vehicle. The 2nd-row seats are comfortable too but the low level of cushioning might cause a bit of discomfort for tall passengers on long trips. The third-row seats are better left for kids or medium-sized adults since sliding the 2nd-row seats back, which would need to be done frequently, kills the entire third-row legroom.

The Ford Explorer has an equally spacious cabin with slightly better comfort levels than the Traverse. The Toyota Highlander has a functional interior with robust quality materials throughout the cabin.

Infotainment

The infotainment system of the Traverse comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display and incorporates several standard features such as Bluetooth, OnStar telematics, a rearview camera, and a six-speaker audio system with a CD player, USB/auxiliary audio inputs, satellite radio, and HD radio.

The 1LT trim of the SUV further adds the MyLink infotainment interface which incorporates voice activation, Bluetooth audio connectivity, and smartphone radio app integration. There is also an optional rear-seat DVD entertainment center with USB input.

The design update for the current model year sees the Traverse getting the Chevrolet’s new design for crossovers. The new front end design features a three-bar upper and two-bar lower front grille design that looks quite athletic and the darkened headlight units accentuate it nicely.

The hood now has more sculpted design cues and it has been carried forward to the rear styling as well. The rear end looks refreshed with Camaro-style tail lights and more sculpted design elements, giving the SUV a much-needed design overhaul.

The Ford Explorer looks more bold and muscular than the Traverse thanks to its bigger and wider front grille and the stretched headlamp units. The Toyota Highlander also looks beefier than the Traverse with a curvy design language on its side profile and wide front-end design.

The Chevrolet Traverse aced both the NHTSA and the IIHS crash tests with superb scores. The NHTSA gave the SUV a top 5-star rating while the IIHS gave it their best possible “Good” rating. The standard safety aids onboard the SUV are four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, rear-view camera, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags for all three rows. OnStar is also added as a standard feature and incorporates automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.
