Love my Dodge Grand Caravan

Pros

I love how much room it has on the inside., I love how much seating is in it.

Cons

I don’t like how long it takes the air conditioning to cool off the entire inside of the vehicle., The gas mileage isn’t very good.

Overall, I have a very high view of my Dodge Grand Caravan. It looks nice on the outside, and even nicer on the inside. I have had a few problems with it since I’ve bought it, but it has been pretty easy to get a mechanic to fix them. The performance is great, it runs smoothly, it’s quiet and it’s got really great maneuverability. The interior is really nice. It’s got really nice cloth seats so i... Read more

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Review

Pros

  • Powerful Engine
  • Great handling
  • High-quality cabin

Cons

  • Engine lacks refinement
  • Limited driver and third-row legroom
  • Ride not smooth as competitors

The Dodge Grand Caravan for 2013 comes in five trim lines and uses the same 3.6 L V6 engine that delivers good performance but returns a slightly low fuel economy.

Overview

The Dodge Grand Caravan for 2013 comes in five trim lines and uses the same 3.6 L V6 engine that delivers good performance but returns a slightly low fuel economy. The interior is luxurious, and the minivan provides plenty of space in the first and second rows, while the third row is a bit cramped.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan starts at $19,995 for the base AVP and SE trims. The next in line SXT trim starts at $26,695, followed by the high-end Crew trim costing $28,795. Another trim with the name of R/T is available for the year but that will be reviewed separately. The engine under the hood is a standard 3.6L V6, which churns out 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Dodge has filled the minivan with a variety of comfort and safety features across the trims, which can be seen below.

We Recommend

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan’s Crew trim would be the best option to go for. It starts at $28,795 and comes equipped with features, including 17-inch tech silver aluminum wheels, fog lamps, bright window trim belt molding, stow ’n place roof rack with bright side roof rails, Uconnect 430 with 6.5-inch touch screen, ParkView, rear backup camera, and CD/DVD/mp3 radio, interior led ambient lighting, power 8-way driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar along with many other features.

Engine and Performance
7.3/10

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan comes equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that puts out a maximum power of 283 hp and a maximum torque of 260 lb-ft. The engine's power is transferred to the front wheels through a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission.

The Grand Caravan reaches 60 mph in 8.1 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 16.0 seconds, which are pretty good numbers considering the size and segment. The acceleration is pretty strong, and the 6-speed transmission is smooth and delivers crisp shifts. But the ride is not as comfortable as rivals, and the same is the case with the refinement of the engine.

In comparison, the Nissan Quest is the fastest of the lot. With a 3.5 L V6 under its hood extracting 260 hp and 240 lb-ft, the Quest launches to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 16.1 seconds. The Dodge produces more power, delivering 283 hp and 260 lb-ft while being faster in crossing the quarter-mile in 16.0 seconds. The Odyssey is the least powerful of the bunch.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

In the minivan segment, the Grand Caravan doesn’t deliver any mind-blowing numbers in terms of fuel efficiency. It provides a lower fuel economy than the rivals. The Dodge Grand Caravan delivers fuel efficiency of 17 mpg in the city, 25 on the highway, and 20 mpg of combined fuel economy. The Grand Caravan gets a 20.0-gallon fuel capacity, outputting a range of 340 miles in the city, 500 on the highway, and a combined range of 400 miles.

Honda’s Odyssey and Nissan's Quest deliver combined fuel efficiency of 21 mpg, followed by the Dodge delivering efficiency of 20 mpg. The Odyssey has the biggest fuel capacity of 21.0 gallons, followed by the Dodge and Nissan with a 20-gallon fuel capacity. Consequently, the Odyssey also delivers the best combined range of 441 miles, followed by the Nissan and Dodge providing lower 420 and 400 miles of combined range, respectively.

Interior
7.5/10

The Grand Caravan provides a spacious interior with a good first row and a high-quality interior with great fit and finish. The materials inside the cabin are of good quality, and the buttons and center console looks and feels premium.

There is a good amount of space and comfort offered in the first row and second-row seats, while the third row lacks legroom. However, the driver seat cannot be slid rearwards enough, hence limiting the driver's legroom which is disappointing. The cabin features dual-zone climate control and leather-trimmed elements.

The Grand Caravan falls short of the competition in terms of space. When it comes to second-row space, the Nissan and Honda have more than the Nissan, and in the third row, the Nissan has lower legroom than the Odyssey while the Dodge again has the least legroom. The Odyssey provides a drastically increased 42.4 inches of legroom in the third row. When it comes to cargo capacity, the Honda again has the most at 38.4 cu-ft, followed by the Dodge Grand Caravan with 33.0 cu-ft and the Quest with 25.7 cu-ft of the cargo area. Major interior features include-

  • Power 8-way driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls
  • Leather-wrapped shift knob
  • 3-zone Automatic Temperature Control (ATC)
  • 2nd-row bucket seats with Super Stow ’n Go
  • 3rd-row Stow ’n Go with tailgate seats

How intuitive is the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan’s infotainment unit?

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan features a Uconnect infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen. It is equipped with Bluetooth, Aux, and USB Connectivity along with satellite radio. As for audio, there are 6 speakers in the lower trims, while the high-end R/T trim gets an Infinity premium audio system with 9 speakers. The higher-end audio system sounds great. Few key infotainment features of the minivan are-

  • Uconnect 430 with 6.5-inch touch screen
  • ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera, and CD/DVD/MP3 radio
  • Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a 1-year subscription
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Aux input

Exterior
7.0/10

The Grand Caravan looks distinctive and elegant. The minivan certainly does not look like a traditional minivan and gives a feel of an extended hatchback. The change in the design language and exterior elements is minimal, and it looks pretty much unchanged from the old generation one.

The side profile features 17" alloy wheels in different finishes. The front end has a grille with a plus-like partition in the center of it. It’s not a very flashy or super good-looking vehicle but is not a bad-looking one either.

The Nissan has the best ground clearance of 6.2 inches, while the Dodge and the Honda have 5.6 and 4.5 inches of clearance, respectively. The Honda is the widest in the competition, while the Nissan is the highest. Major exterior highlights of the minivan are-

  • 17-inch Tech Silver aluminum wheels
  • Fog lamps
  • Bright window trim belt molding
  • Stow ’n Place roof rack with bright side roof rails
  • Unique monochromatic exterior appearance including body-color grille and door handles
  • Deep-tinted sunscreen glass

Safety
8.4/10

The new Dodge Grand Caravan comes equipped with many standard safety features for keeping itself and its numerous passengers safe, including ABS, advanced multistage front, side-curtain, front-seat side-mounted, and driver’s knee blocker airbags along with other high tech safety features. NHTSA has given the Grand Caravan a rating of five stars, while IIHS gives it a ‘Good’ under all criteria. These safety scores are super impressive and among the absolute best to ensure that the Grand Caravan is a safe vehicle. It stops from 60 mph at a distance of 130 ft, which is average, but the high-end R/T trim stops at 119 ft, which is impressive. Few salient safety features of the Grand Caravan are-

  • Active front head restraints[10]
  • 4-wheel antilock disc brakes
  • Trailer sway control
  • Blind Spot Monitoring system

Final Verdict

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan is a great option in the minivan segment. It offers a well-designed exterior with a well-built cabin along with a great feature set and a powerful engine. But it's certainly not the best in the segment. It lacks interior space for the driver as well as in the third row. The engine is noisy and unrefined. The Dodge Grand Caravan is not the best option right now, hence, we would give it a pass for better options in the segment.
