2013 Ford Focus Review

Pros

  • Precise handling
  • Eager engine
  • Smooth ride quality

Cons

  • Infotainment controls take a while to get used to
  • Rear space is less on legroom

The compact car segment is one of the most selling segments in the US today. There are a lot of these cars that are available in the market today, and the competition is fierce.

Overview

The compact car segment is one of the most selling segments in the US today. There are a lot of these cars that are available in the market today, and the competition is fierce. The Japanese cars especially offer a lot of practicality and usability in this segment. However, this segment was once upon a time dominated by the Ford Focus. But as time passed, the car lost the charm it had until Ford finally revamped it in 2012. Since then, the car has been on a roll and is currently one of the best cars that you can buy today.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

Ford offers this car in 3 trims: S, SE, and Titanium. The car has only one engine on offer. The price starts from $16,200 for the S variant and goes all the way up to $23,200 for the top-of-the-line Titanium variant. Features such as powered front windows, locks and mirrors, tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, 15-inch steel wheels are offered as standard across all trims.

We Recommend

We have to recommend either the SE or the Titanium. They are super feature-rich, and you also can extract a better economy. They have better exterior and interior colors, and also, you can have the option of an automatic suspension. We do recommend the Appearance package and the MyFord Touch package for the SE. For the Titanium, we recommend the Navigation system and the Titanium Handling package.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

The car is offered with a 2.0L I-4 engine. This engine makes 160 hp @6500 rpm and 146 lb.-ft @4450 rpm. This engine is very refined, smooth, and economic. The car gets two gearboxes, a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

We should tell you that the manual gearbox is much better than the automatic one. The car is a Front-wheel driven car. The sedan touches the 60 mph mark in 8.2 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 16.2 seconds.

The Focus and the Elantra are pretty much on par with their performance figures. They come very close to each other and vary by 0.2 seconds max. The Ford times a 0-60 mph in 8.2 seconds while the Hyundai does it in 8.1 seconds. The Corolla, on the other hand, is very leisurely and takes one of the slowest times to 0-60 in this segment, at 9.6 seconds. The top speed is also lower than the other two, at 117 mph.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The economies of all the 3 cars in the city are very much similar to each other, but on the highway, the difference is around 2 mpg between them. The Ford Focus actually offers a good economy, but the other two are just that slightly better. We, however, feel that this will depend a lot on how you drive, and you might be able to extract better than what is on paper.

The Elantra is the one which offers the highest economy at 28/38 (city/highway). It has a tank capacity of 12.8 gallons, which converts into a range of 358 miles in the city and 485 miles on the highway. The Corolla does offer an economy of 27/34 (city/highway) and is aided by its 13.2-gallon tank. This gets it pretty close to the Elantra in the city range. It offers a range of 356/448 (city/highway) miles. The Focus, however, has the least economy in this test, at 26/36 (city/highway0. It also has the smallest tank capacity at 12.4 gallons. This provides the car with a range of 322/446 (city/highway) miles.

Interior
7.5/10

The interior in the Focus is one of the best interiors you can get in this segment considering what you pay. It is very neat and has a calm appearance and appeal to you. There are a lot of soft-touch surfaces that look very premium.

The materials inside are of high quality. The only issue we had was with the layout of the controls. They are complicated, and not easy to use. The sedan comes with a cargo capacity of 13.2 cubic feet.

The seating in the Ford is very comfortable and does justice over long-distance travel. The front seats are very comfortable and supportive and offer good headroom and legroom. The rear legroom is less compared to the rivals, but you can fit 6 feet tall passengers well. The rear space in the Corolla is just massive, and the legroom is ample. The Elantra overall is much bigger and roomy in the front. It has the most trunk space as well. The Focus also gets a healthy 13.2 cubic feet storage, which is on par with the class standards. A few interior features are:

  • Rear center armrest
  • Leather upholstery
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Cruise Control
  • Power-adjustable driver’s seat

How intuitive is the 2013 Ford Focus’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system is pretty advanced, but using it takes a while. The controls are not easy to identify or use as a lot of times we found ourselves pressing the wrong buttons as well. The standard equipment on the car is limited to a CD player, audio jack, and 4 speakers. The SE trim offers 6 speakers and Ford's Sync voice-activated phone and audio player interface. The optional MyFord Touch package offers navigation, 10 speakers Sony system, and an 8-inch touchscreen system. Some important infotainment features include:

  • MyFord Touch System
  • Sony speaker system
  • Sync voice-activated phone and audio player interface
  • Satellite radio
  • Navigation

Exterior
9.0/10

The exterior of the Focus is very attractive and has a lot of curves everywhere. The front is aggressive with a nice big grille that goes well with the medium-sized headlamps.

There are big wheel arches, and they do bulge out. You have a sharp line along the side that runs from the headlamps to the taillights along with the door handles, and we really like it. The arching roofline blends in with the curves and creases and enhances the looks of this car. The rear outward visibility in this car is less compared to the rivals.

The Focus and the Elantra are not only similar in the performance but in the dimensions as well. The Elantra however is less wide as well as less heavy. The Focus is a well-proportioned car and sits tight on that 104 inches wheelbase. The Corolla has the shortest wheelbase at 102.4 inches but is the longest car. The Focus sits pretty close to the ground as well, compared to the other two. Some exterior features are:

  • Fog lamps
  • 18” wheels
  • Rear spoiler
  • Sunroof
  • Heated door mirrors

Safety
9.0/10

The Focus features a 4-star rating from NHTSA. The Focus was made as a world car, which means it had different safety tests to undergo, but from NCAP, it received a rating of 5 stars. The Focus offers very necessary features such as airbags, stability control, traction control, head restraints, and the Ford Sync System as standard. The Ford Sync has an emergency crash notification feature that informs 911 of a crash when connected to a compatible mobile. Other important safety features are:

  • 4 wheels ABS
  • Dusk sensing headlamps
  • Rear-view camera
  • Tire Pressure monitoring
  • Traction control

Final Verdict

The 2013 Ford Focus is a trendy car, and many people love it. It has a very attractive interior, which is aided by its good-looking exterior. The car has a very good fuel economy, and the engine is smooth, refined, and silent as well. There are a lot of features on offer, and the car is absolutely safe. It is one of the top choices, and we cannot deny that. We recommend this car to you all.
