Overall Rating
The XV CrossTrek is an all-new offering from Subaru in the SUV segment. This car is more designed as a small SUV with a body style like that of a station wagon.
The XV CrossTrek is an all-new offering from Subaru in the SUV segment. This car is more designed as a small SUV with a body style like that of a station wagon. Basically, it’s a crossover, which is popular in America, so it only makes sense for a manufacturer to have a model of their own in such a successful body style. The XV CrossTrek reminds us of the new Impreza and in some ways, it is a bigger Impreza.
The 2.0i Premium itself is so feature-loaded that according to us the Limited trim does not have much to offer. Plus, the important extra features from the Limited trim can be acquired through the optional features for the Premium. There is also an all-wheel drive as standard fitting. The price the car comes at is pretty aggressive and is better than the other models in this same class.

The Subaru has one engine as standard across all trims. The 2.0L horizontally opposite boxer engine makes 148 hp @6200 rpm and 145 lb.-ft @4200 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the Premium and is coupled to an All-wheel-drive system.
The power distribution for this system is 50/50 front/rear. The CVT is an optional gearbox for the Premium but standard on the Limited.

The Nissan Juke and the XV CrossTrek have similar performance at 8.2 seconds and 16.4 seconds for the 0-60 mph time and quarter-mile time respectively. The Juke’s top sped is the highest, at 129 mph. The Outlander falls behind by around a second in both the time runs. The XV CrossTrek is easy to drive and very fuel-efficient in the city.
Customer feedbacks mention that on the highway, the car feels relaxed at cruising speeds and can maintain these speeds easily. The main focus is off-road because that is where the car comes into life. The handling, performance, and stability of the car are excellent. Go over any terrain, and the XV CrossTrek won’t let you down.
The XV CrossTrek’s fuel economy is on par in this segment. The city/highway fuel efficiency stands at 23/30 mpg for the manual transmission option. Surprisingly, the CVT does better than the manual and offers fuel efficiency of 25/33 mpg for the city/highway. The car gets a nearly 16-gallon fuel tank. The tank capacity is pretty good for this segment of cars.

The most range is offered by the Outlander, at 398 city miles and 514 highway miles. It also has the most tank capacity at 16.6-gallons. The XV CrossTrek is second at 365 city miles and 477 highway miles. The Juke offers the least range at 356 city miles and 422 highway miles. It also has the least fuel capacity at 13.2 gallons. Although none of the ranges are bad, we just need to pinpoint.
The interiors are simple and neat. The cabin is very inviting and one will like the smooth materials used inside. Overall, the car has a lot of similarities to the Impreza. You might as well call the Subaru XV CrossTrek the pumped-up Impreza.
The materials are of high finish and the quality is top-notch. There is the use of soft-touch materials on the door panels. The car is clutter-free and everything is laid out as easy to reach as possible.

The front seats are tall and offer a good view of the road. They are remarkably comfortable with well-padded support for the seats. The legroom is sufficient, and so is the headroom. Tall passengers won’t have a problem with comfort in this car. The rear seats are also great at comfort. You’ll find yourself happier in the rear seats of the car, however. This comfort is even more enhanced because of the smooth and cushioned ride quality offered by the suspension. The cabin is super quiet. The trunk space is one of the best that we find in this class, at 22.3 cubic feet. Few interior features of the XV CrossTrek are:
The XV CrossTrek’s infotainment system is well equipped with features across both trims. As standard, you get a CD player, auxiliary jack, Bluetooth phone, and audio connectivity and streaming, USB port, and a 6-speaker sound system. The Limited trim adds a 4.3-inch LCD display. The Limited gets a navigation system with satellite radio as an option. Some infotainment features include:
With more and more time than we’ve spent inside and around the XV CrossTrek, we’ve realized that it is an Impreza hatchback on super-strength serum. You cannot miss out on the hatchback type design of the car, no matter what. It has high ground clearance, with protective lower body cladding and other exterior parts that actually work off-road.
The ‘falcon’ headlamp design seen on the Impreza is carried forward on the XV CrossTrek as well. There are a lot of chrome inserts in and around the grille. The approach and departure angles on the XV CrossTrek are good and we barely scraped the car anywhere during off-road. The exterior design makes it look more rugged and muscular as compared to the rivals. The rear visibility is good, but we were not fond of the rather too simple rear design and expected more. The side is well made with blacked-out wheel arches and a sloping roofline.

The XV CrossTrek has the most ground clearance and also is the heaviest vehicle out in this comparison. You do feel the weight at slow speeds but once it gets going it is nimble enough. The car is pretty long too, but easy to maneuver. The other cars are lighter than the XV CrossTrek and also more similar in proportions. The wheelbase of the Juke is the least at 99.6 inches. Exterior highlights to name a few are:
The NHTSA has not yet crash-tested the XV CrossTrek, but the IIHS gave it a ‘Good’ rating overall. The new Subaru CrossTrek receives standard safety features such as traction control, stability control, antilock disc brakes with brake assist, front and side airbags, curtain airbags, driver knee airbags, and active front head restraints. Some safety features are:
The Subaru XV CrossTrek has a good safety score and also is very comfortable and easy to drive. It is feature-packed and has decent performance but its lazy engine and slow acceleration can be a problem. There is enough on offer by the car, but there are a few other cars as well who are fun to drive and offer better reliability. But this car is an all-new offering from Subaru and we think it is worthy of an audience.
