2013 Toyota Camry Review

Pros

  • Fuel-efficient engines
  • Spacious interiors
  • Great outward visibility
  • 10 standard airbags

Cons

  • Soft steering and vague handling
  • No manual transmission available

After years of pestering and requesting to Toyota and after starting to face the heat from rival Japanese and Korean brands, Toyota finally updated the Camry last year and has made it more appealing to younger buyers and is trying to move away from a sad and boring carmaker tag that it has gotten over the years.

Overview

The 2013 Toyota Camry has great reliability, low running costs, and a modernized interior. For 2013 MY, the car gets improved interior styling and a touchscreen infotainment unit as standard. These changes might not seem like a lot but Toyota gave the Camry a complete redesign for 2012.

So it is still an all-new model and one of the top-ranking midsize sedans among the likes of Honda Accord and Nissan Altima. The Camry lineup is a mixture of peppy performance and great fuel economy. There is a 2.5L inline-4 motor for best-in-class fuel economy while a larger 3.5L V-6 offers impressive performance.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2013 Toyota Camry is offered in 4 trims levels: L, LE, SE, and XLE. This midsize sedan starts off at a sticker price of $22,235 for the base L trim and goes up to $24,855 for the top-end XLE trim, all excluding an $810 destination charge.

A  2.5L inline-4 engine and 6-speed automatic gearbox standard on all trims. The SE and the XLE models offer the larger 3.5L V6 motor for a price of $27,260 and $30,465 respectively. Further, every Camry comes with front-wheel drive as a stand-alone choice.

Buying Advice

The V6 engine with the SE trim is a true masterpiece of performance and would satiate buyers looking for drivability. The base trim is too barebones, and the LE or the XLE trims seem better off. The inline-4 on the XLE trim makes the most sense for a daily use sedan. In the end, everything comes down to a choice between frugality or power.

Engine and Performance
6.4/10

"Although the Camry offers respectable handling and a comfortable ride, the driving experience still feels rather disconnected and numb." -Edmunds.Com

The 2013 Toyota Camry has front-wheel-drive and 6-speed automatic transmission as standard over the whole lineup. There are two engine options on offer, however. The base 2.5L inline-4 motor makes 178 horsepower and 170 foot-pounds of torque.

The 3.5L V-6 motor, available on the SE and the XLE trims, makes 268 horsepower and 248 foot-pounds of torque. In comparison, the Honda Accord seems to have the best power output from its motor and reaches 0-60 mph in just 7.5 seconds. The Camry takes 8.4 seconds to rush to 60 mph from 0, which is pretty average for the segment.

Although when set up with the V6 motor, this midsize sedan is able to achieve the same feat in 6.6 seconds. Among rivals, both the Nissan Altima and the Honda Accord have a CVT gearbox rather than the torque converter automatic like the Camry. Still, it feels plenty refined and the ride remains smooth at all times.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

On the current Camry, there is a hybrid powertrain on offer that does 43 mpg in cities and 39 mpg on highways, which is by far the most efficient on the lineup. The 2.5L inline-4 gasoline engine puts forth 25 mpg in cities, 35 mpg on highways, and 28 mpg combined. The V6, on the other hand, gives an economy of 21 mpg in cities, 31 mpg on highways, and 25 mpg combined.

Thankfully, it gets a large 17.0-gallon fuel tank, which is still the smallest in the competition but does well to offer a range of close to 600 miles. The Honda Accord is both more efficient and also has a larger capacity tank to give it a tad bit better range. The Nissan Altima, on the other hand, has the best range of 684 miles owing to the best-in-class fuel economy ratings and the largest 18.0-gallon fuel tank.

Interior
5.7/10

"The front seats are comfortable and have ample support for long drives. Adult passengers should find the back seat to be spacious." -Cars.USNews.Com

The 2013 Toyota Camry has one of the smoothest rides in the segment. The newer updated model even has better space in the cabin. While most sedans are now going for the cockpit-style feel to the front seats, the Camry has a spacious front row with a pushed dashboard and smooth corners. It is one of the best midsize sedans for larger adults.

The rear seats also offer better space with more knee room. The sedan offers foldable rear seatbacks, which add a tiny bit to the convenience. The SE trim has a harsher ride quality, though the comfy seats you get are with the expense. All the sedans come with a seating capacity of five, which is usual in the segment.

Compared to the competition, the Carmy has the best rear-row legroom. It even has considerable headroom, which makes fitting larger passengers quite easy. The boot is capacious with 15.4 cubic feet on offer, though the opening with the tail lamps doesn't allow for easy loading. Some standout features in the cabin include:

  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Sunroof
  • 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats

Bluetooth connectivity is included in all trims, even the base model of the Toyota Camry. There is a 6.1-inch screen-based audio display also on offer, which has Bluetooth streaming, USB connectivity, and iPod Connectivity. The system has an inbuilt navigation system with voice recognition. Toyota’s advanced Entune system is also optionally available. On the audio front, the base system has 6-speakers, while a premium JBL audio is available. Few standout infotainment features include:

  • Navigation
  • 6-Speaker Sound System
  • 6-inch display
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Toyota Entune System
  • USB and Aux Support

Exterior
6.5/10

"It would be a stretch to call the Camry an object of beauty from the outside, and it oozes practicality and space efficiency way more that shape, stance, flowing form, or characterful sheetmetal." -TheCarConnection.Com

The Camry had a redesign in 2012, which largely kept the exterior dimension the same, though there are subtle styling changes all over the exterior. The exterior is highly simplistic with a focus on maximizing space in the cabin, though it does feel a bit box-like on the get-go.

Toyota calls the current design theme “Rational Tech-Dynamism,” which aims for a sporty exterior and a modern interior. Comparing the wheelbases of the competing sedans, all of them sit at a consistent 109.3 inches. In width, though the Honda Accord is the widest of the sedans, while the Camry is the sleekest.

The Camry sits right in the middle of the competition in terms of weight with 3,190 lbs. The sedan stands 6.1 inches above the ground, while the competition sits relatively lower to the ground, making for more responsive driving dynamics. Some standout exterior features in the car are:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Fog lamps
  • Automatic headlamps
  • “Rational Tech-Dynamism” Design theme

Safety
8.4/10

The 2012 design was aimed at refining the underpinnings of the sedan to perform better in safety. Both US safety organizations have given the Camry great ratings; the IIHS has awarded the 2013 sedan with the “Top Safety Pick” award. The NHTSA also gave the car a 5-star overall rating, though it gets a 4-star front impact rating. The Camry is lighter and stronger than the previous model and has a plethora of safety features and technology. Some standout safety features in the sedan are:

  • Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
  • Traction Control (TRAC)
  • 4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
  • Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)
  • Driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) includes lower anchors on outboard rear seats
  • Child-protector rear door locks and power window lockout control
  • Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) with direct pressure readout

Final Verdict

The Toyota Camry is a reliable and well-made offering in the midsize sedan segment. Everything about the car speaks of great attention to detail and durable lasting quality. The powertrains on offer are responsive, reliable, and also quite efficient. The transmission is a torque converter auto, which can lose out a bit in terms of fuel economy as compared to other competitors sporting CVT gearboxes. Overall though, the 2013 Toyota Camry is a great and highly recommended pick.
