2013 Toyota Yaris Review

Pros

  • Cool interior styling
  • Stimulating ride quality
  • Adequate seating space

Cons

  • Noisy cabin
  • Low-quality interior plastics
  • Flat four-speed automatic transmission

The 2013 Toyota Yaris is a compact car that's designed for people looking for a fuel-efficient and economical day-to-day use option.

Overview

The 2013 Toyota Yaris is a compact car that's designed for people looking for a fuel-efficient and economical day-to-day use option. It has some great reliability ratings, which isn’t a new thing for a product coming from the house of Toyota. With all the cheerful features under the hood, the Yaris comes with few performance shortcomings that disappoint sprint enthusiasts.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2012 Toyota Yaris is available in three trims namely, L, LE, and a sporty version called SE. A five-speed manual transmission is standard for all the trims, with the option to upgrade to a four-speed automatic transmission. All these variants come standard with features like power door locks, air-conditioning, a tilt steering wheel.

We Recommend

Given that the price of all the trims stands close to each other without a huge margin, we recommend buying the SE variant coupled with a manual transmission as it has a more tuned suspension and brisk acceleration. Available with features like upgraded cloth upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lamps, and more, the SE trim makes the best value-for-money deal.

Engine and Performance
6.6/10

The 2013 Toyota Yaris lineup is powered by a 1.5-liter Inline-4 engine that makes 106 horses of power and 103 lb.-ft of torque. Despite its brawny looks outside, it doesn’t deliver much power when compared to its rivals. A five-speed manual transmission is all you get out of the box that can be optioned out to a four-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of performance, the Toyota Yaris with the 1.5-liter L4 engine can reach 60 mph in 9.3 seconds and a quarter-mile in 16.1 seconds with the manual transmission, whereas the SE variant mated to an Automatic transmission takes a second more. In the top speed test, the Toyota Yaris records 110 MPH, which is the lowest in the competition.

The 2013 Toyota Yaris delivers great fuel efficiency especially in bustling streets in the city. It gives a mileage of 30-mpg in the city while 36-mpg on the highway and 32-mpg for combined use. It features a fuel tank of 11.1 gallons capacity, which is good enough in this segment. With full tank capacity, the Yaris can run for 333.3 miles in the city and 399.6 miles on the highway.

Fiesta and Sonic average 33 and 30 MPG, respectively. The Fiesta and Sonic, both don a fuel tank of 12 and 12.2 gallons, respectively. In terms of range, both cars outperform the Toyota Yaris.

Interior
7.2/10

The 2013 Toyota Yaris features a reasonably good-looking and straightforward cabin with good materials. But certainly, Toyota has upped its game in the comfort segment in its compact cars. It provides a refreshing amount of leg-room and head-room, which’s acceptable for long-limbed adults too.

Behind the wheel, we get to sit in an upholstery seat that is wider and higher to give better on-road visibility. We get a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, and in SE, we get few controls included in the steering wheel. It offers a well-balanced ride quality in the cities for a short period of time while spending long hours on the highways may seem boring. It offers a cargo space of 15.6 cu.-ft, which is about average. It offers a room for 5 people.

2013 Toyota Yaris’s infotainment system

The infotainment system in the 2013 Toyota Yaris has got better than its previous generation. It now features a standard Tech Audio package that features all the digital flexibility like Bluetooth phone connectivity, a six-speaker audio system with a CD player, and an auxiliary audio jack. Some other salient features include:

  • Bluetooth Connectivity for phone and audio streaming
  • CD Player
  • HD Radio
  • Auxiliary audio jack
  • USB/iPod interface

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2013 Toyota Yaris remains unchanged this year. The Yaris has a brawny and aggressive look from the front fascia. The sharp air dams, big door handles, and flared-out tail lamps help it give a sporty feel that falls flat as we move on to the rear fascia where we get a traditional hatch enclosure.

The Toyota Yaris has a total curb weight of 2,315 lbs. It is 153.5 inches long and sports a wheelbase of 98.8 inches. It is 66.7 inches wide, which is pretty compact in this segment. While its ground clearance is 5.5 inches, the Mazda 3 stands at a total height of 59.4 inches.

Final Verdict

The 2013 Toyota Yaris is a well-designed car that can be used as a daily driver without hitting hard on your pocket. It has got great fuel efficiency, roomy interior, and generous power to meet the purpose. But if you are looking for a joyful ride experience with adequate luxury offerings, the 2013 Toyota Yaris may do the work of disappointing you.
