The base trim of the Audi A5 itself comes very much loaded with a lot of tech features, and hence there is no wrong trim to pick in the lineup. However, with features such as auto-dimming mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, heated front seats as well as the S line trim package, the Premium Plus is an excellent option, especially since it costs only about $2,000 over the base trim. Audi offers several optional packages that make the car quite special. The Navigation Package adds excellent infotainment features, but the Premium Plus trim level offers an excellent Technology Package as well as the Sport Plus Package and S Line Competition Package.

Engine and Performance

There is only one engine option available in the Audi S5 Coupe, i.e., a 2.0L turbocharged in-line four-cylinder engine. This engine produces 220 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque, while a six-speed manual transmission is standard along with an all-wheel-drive system. An eight-speed automatic transmission is available, but this engine is underwhelming considering how good the car handles and hence needed a better power plant to complement its sporting abilities.

However, Audi only offers better engines in other models based on the A5 such as the S5 and the RS 5. The base engine reaches the 60 mph mark in 6.5 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 15.2 seconds, which is pretty unremarkable considering the segment it is in. When it comes to price range, all the coupes in the competition stand very close to each other, with Mercedes taking the back seat at $38,200.

One can see from the spec sheets that Audi is not too underpowered when it is compared to its competitors. However, it is the BMW 4 Series that has the best performance credentials of the lot despite being only a little high on horsepower. The Mercedes is underpowered and performs slowly in terms of acceleration as well. Probably the only thing the Audi has working for it is that it has a very capable all-wheel-drive system, while its competitors only have rear-wheel drive.

One can see where Audi’s priorities have been when you look at the efficiency figures. We have the A5 Coupe with a combined figure of 24 MPG, which translates to 20 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway. Due to this high efficiency, it makes do with a relatively small fuel tank capacity of 16.1 gallons. The automatic return slightly lesser figures, about one MPG lesser in each of the categories.

In comparison, all three cars are again pretty evenly matched in terms of fuel efficiency. Surprisingly, the BMW's extra performance does not pay even a small penalty in the department of fuel efficiency, and in fact, it is much more fuel-efficient than others in comparison. The Audi is the least fuel-efficient but does not offer the performance to compensate for that deficit either.

The cabin of the Audi A5 is excellent with an understated design along with the use of top-quality materials. The design is pretty attractive, and ergonomics are also excellent throughout. Controls are ergonomic and very intuitive. There is a lack of storage space, and interior space is also a little less. The seats are comfortable, but a lack of lateral support is evident when the car demands spirited driving. The coupe comes with a cargo capacity of 12.2 cubic feet.
