2014 Audi R8 Review

Pros

  • Comfortable cabin
  • Easy to drive fast or slow
  • Traditional and quick-shifting automated manual transmissions available
  • Intoxicating soundtrack
  • Powerful engine lineup

Cons

  • High cost of ownership
  • Minimal cargo space
  • A needlessly complicated infotainment system

For the 2014 model year, the Coupe comes with a new V10 Plus model that offers more power than the standard V10 variant and a new transmission is also added.

Overview

The 2014 Audi R8 is a fantastic sports coupe from the German car manufacturer and was launched back in 2006. For the 2014 model year, the Coupe comes with a new V10 Plus model that offers more power than the standard V10 variant and a new transmission is also added. The coupe comes in an RWD or an AWD layout as per your requirement and both variants serve two completely different sets of performance lovers.

We Recommend

Since the Coupe is available in three performance tunes, the buying decision will solely depend according to your preference. According to us the best price to performance factor is offered by the R8 5.2 which carries all the features of the base trim and packs in a more powerful sonorous V10 powerplant.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The Audi R8 is powered by a naturally aspirated V8 motor which is good for a healthy 430 horsepower and a decent 317lb-ft of torque. The V8 motor is tuned to deliver the power in a linear manner and the absence of a forced-induction system means there’s absolutely no lag in power delivery. The motor feels quite lively and rev-happy and would encourage you to red-line it often. The V10 motor offers a substantial boost in performance but the V8 motor in question here is no slouch and packs in enough performance for daily driving needs to some effortless highway cruising at serious triple-digit speeds. The motor is mated to a sleek-shifting 6-speed manual gear-box along with a standard Quattro AWD system that offers oodles of grip and minimal wheel-spin while accelerating hard from a standstill.

Among the rivals, the Nissan GT-R packs in an absolute bang with overwhelming power and torque figures as compared to the V8 powered R8. The GT-R does all that with a smaller V6 unit that represents some excellent Japanese engineering. The jaguar F-Type on the other hand, offers a solid performance and a better one than the R8 but a much lower price. Surely, the F-Type doesn’t come with the comfort levels of the R8 but for performance seekers, it is a better option.

Fuel Economy
8.9/10

Sport Cars with high-performance engines aren’t exactly synonymous with fuel efficiency and the Audi R8 is no exception. It offers a somewhat decent 11mpg around the city limits while the figure jumps to 20mpg after you hit the interstate. The combined mpg is rated at 14mpg which is decent considering it is a performance oriented vehicle.

The rivals of the R8, however, are in a different ballpark. Both the Nissan GT-R and the F-Type offer significantly more fuel economy ratings than the R8 at all aspects while the low fuel efficiency of the R8 is compensated by Audi by fitting a bigger 23.8 gallons gas tank.

Interior
8.2/10

The interior of the 2014 Audi R8 is on the sportier side while being luxurious. There are plenty of high-gloss and aluminum trims all around the cabin and you can also opt for the optional carbon fiber trim on the inside that enhances the sporty appeal of the interior. The headroom and legroom are sufficient while big adults might find the cabin to be a little cramped for their liking. The seats of the R8 are more than adequately comfortable for long trips and the dashboard design is not exactly driver centric with the controls a little far away from the steering wheel. The center console looks extremely busy with an unnecessary placement of a lot of buttons while the buttons are made out of premium materials.

The Nissan GT-R is the only 4 seater coupe here but the rear seats of the car are better suited to keep extra luggage given their miniscule size. The GT-R feels a bit more roomier than the R8 with a slightly more headroom on offer. The F-Type’s dimensions are also at par with the rivals and the interiors of the car are quite premium as well.

Interior features:

  • Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Remote Trunk Release
  • Universal Garage Door Opener
  • Intermittent Wipers
  • Rain Sensing Wipers
  • Keyless Entry
  • Power Door Locks
  • Electrochromic rearview mirror
  • Heated Mirrors
  • Driver Illuminated Vanity Mirror

Infotainment

The infotainment system of the Audi R8 is pretty basic and is a Audi Navigation Plus system and comes with a color display. It also integrates Audi’s MMI system along with a seven-speaker audio system and a six-disc CD changer.

Some of the features of the infotainment system are:

  • Audi’s MMI infotainment system
  • A seven-speaker stereo
  • Bluetooth
  • A six-disc CD changer
  • Satellite radio
  • iPod interface
  • Navigation
  • Bang & Olufsen stereo(optional)
  • Backup camera

Exterior
8.2/10

The exterior of the R8 looks quite sharp and handsome with smooth lines flowing from the front to the rear of the car. The front fascia now looks more handsome with the all LED headlights and accent lights while the front grille remains the same with wide and blacked-out air intakes. The overall design from the side profile till the rear-end remains the same as the last model year’s car.

The Nissan GT-R is the heaviest car on the list but with a much more radical design language that won’t brag out loud about the immense performance it hides under its shell. The F-Type looks fantastic too with a compact design language and sheer British elegance.

Safety
9.8/10

Audi is known to build vehicles that are supremely safe and loaded with safety features. The R8 doesn’t have any crash-test ratings given its price and comes with some basic safety aids. The reason that it doesn’t pack in many safety features is to keep its weight as low as possible and make it more engaging for the driver.

Some standard safety aids are:

  • Driver and passenger airbags with front side airbags
  • 4-wheel ABS
  • Brake-assist
  • ESP
  • Traction control
  • Daytime running lights

Final Verdict

The Audi R8 is a practical sports car from the German automaker. Given its on-road behaviour, it can be driven on a daily basis owing to its adaptive suspension system and can be an excellent track car as well. The V10 equipped variants ups the ante of the performance to a whole new level with a bellowing exhaust note everytime you floor it. On the interior aspect, the R8 stands out from the crowd with a comfortable and practical cabin and seats and the car can be used for long trips as well. Overall, if you’re seeking for an excellent performance machine along with comfort and practicality too, the R8 is the one for you.
