2014 Audi TT Review

Pros

  • Handles corners very well
  • Quattro All-Wheel drive
  • Strong engine performance

Cons

  • Quite expensive with all the options
  • No TT RS for 2014
  • Rear seats are too impractical

Audi TT is Audi's shot to set a benchmark in compact entry-level sports cars to compete with other Germans such as Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class and BMW Z4.

Overview

Audi TT is Audi's shot to set a benchmark in compact entry-level sports cars to compete with other Germans such as Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class and BMW Z4. Audi always has a thing for designing cars and that can easily be realized after a glance at this roadster. It may look more civilized from the outside but underneath the bonnet is an iconic 2-liter TFSI engine that gives a phenomenal performance for its volume.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

As standard, the 2014 Audi TT comes in one trim with a base price of $39,900. The Audi TT gets two body styles; coupe and convertible, which share the same engine. The Audi TTS is the performance version, and it is a bit more tweaked to put out more power and torque. As standard, some of the features include a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, LED interior ambiance lighting and adorned leather package, heated front seats, and Phantom black interior.

We Recommend:

We recommend buying the only trim Audi TT for its unrivaled performance and go-kart-like handling. It features a tiny yet powerful engine, pushing out more horses. When it comes to the features, Audi TT never fails to stagger you with hitech features at its disposal. The Audi TT checks all the boxes of a luxury, compact, powerful entry-level sports car, and if you’re looking for a car with all these boxes checked, Audi TT is the car you should go for.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The Audi TT comes with a 2-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that churns out 211 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and powers all the wheels through a Quattro four-wheel-drive system which adds to the experience of driving. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in a legit quick 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph, and this engine gives a smooth and linear power band throughout the top end.

In comparison, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class manages the least power and torque output of 201 hp and 229 lb.-ft of torque. The BMW Z4 manages to beat the rivals and stand at the top with 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The Audi TT falls in between both its rivals in terms of quarter-mile timing, it clocks 13.9 seconds in comparison to BMW's 13.8 and SLK's 14.6 seconds. However, Audi leads the race in a 0-60 mph sprint. The BMW Z4 is more entertaining, but the Audi TT has a more usable performance.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Audi TT belongs to a division of performance compact sports cars, and hence this car has performance over fuel economy, but it still manages to deliver a reasonable fuel economy. It averages a mileage of 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg while cruising on the highway. When combined, it averages a mileage of 26 miles to the gallon. However, its fuel tank capacity of 15.8 gallons allows the TT to cover 347.6 miles in the city and 489.8 miles on the highways.

In comparison, all three cars put out an approximately similar fuel economy. The BMW Z4 leads the pack with the highest fuel efficiency of 28 miles per gallon in combined conditions. Both Mercedes-Benz SLK and Audi TT feature larger tanks, and as a result, are able to trump the BMW Z4 in terms of range by a considerable margin. The BMW Z4 has a total fuel capacity of 14.5, making it the least voluminous fuel capacity among its competitors.

Interior
8.2/10

The ideology of Audi’s interior is to give maximum comfort and luxury to the passengers over everything else. Despite its compact cabin size, it can also fit tall people quite well with an enormous headroom and legroom. The use of high-grade materials all over the cockpit gives a top-notch feel to the interior. As an option, the TT comes with an adaptive magnetic suspension that provides precise compression and rebound damping that gives a flawless ride quality.

The LED interior lighting and leather treatment all over the cabin make the interior look way ahead of its time. It also has a seating capacity of 4 passengers, and the only car among its rivals to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children passengers, making it an overall practical car for its size in comparison with its competitors. The cargo capacity figure is not available for now.

In comparison, the BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class give a hard battle to Audi TT. Audi TT is the only car to have a second-row space, while the other cars have no second-row space, which in turn puts TT in the first place when it comes to the overall space of the interior. The cargo capacity on offer with the Z4 is the highest in the segment at 8 cubic feet, while the SLK manages 6.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Some of the interior features include:

  • Remote Keyless Entry
  • Premium Leather Seats
  • Steering Mounted Controls
  • Tilt and Telescopic Steering Wheel
  • Interior Ambience lighting

How intuitive is the 2014 Audi TT’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system on the Audi TT features a 6.5-inch display screen with MMI infotainment, SiriusXM Radio, Real-time traffic, two SD card slots for MP3 player, and it also includes a 12 speakers Bose premium sound system. As standard, it comes equipped with advanced features like Bluetooth connectivity, Premium amplifier, and wireless phone connectivity. Some other infotainment features include:

  • 12-speaker Bose sound system
  • Speed sensitive volume
  • CD Player
  • Steering wheel mounted audio controls
  • 1 1st row LCD monitor
  • Radio data system

Exterior
8.0/10

The cleanly styled TT is a masterclass in how to get the detailing right. It looks like an Audi R8 in a babygrow suit from any angle. The sharp-looking headlamps with DRLs enhance the look of the car, and they blend seamlessly with the lines of the car. The dual exhaust pipes look like it has been derived from a racing car.

The whole car is designed with two things in mind, less drag and more aero efficiency, which make it look like a mid-engined car. The Audi TT comes with 18-inch alloy wheels on either side with a low stance and shorter wheelbase, which gives it a striking styling. This car definitely has that “Take your camera phone out” appeal. Audi TT is the lightest car of the lot, making it more agile than its rivals.

In comparison, the BMW Z4 is the heaviest and the longest car in this segment with a curb weight of 3,263 lbs and 166.9 inches, respectively. The Audi TT takes the sweet spot when it comes to length, which is 165.3 inches. The Audi TT is also the tallest car in the segment with a height of 53.2 inches, which in turn affects the center of gravity but not that much.

Safety
7.0/10

Audi is well known for its hi-tech safety features, and this car obviously comes with tons of safety and driver-assist features. It is very safe and reliable and is backed by a long list of safety features. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested the Audi TT yet. It makes use of 4 wheel disc brakes with four-channel ABS. As standard, it incorporates features like Dual front impact airbags, side-impact bars, Traction control, brake assist, and key immobilizer. Some of the standout safety features include-

  • Panic alarm
  • Electronic stability control
  • ABS and driveline traction control
  • Daytime running lights
  • Adjustable front head restraints
  • Knee airbags

Final Verdict

The Audi TT with its adorable design outrivals its competitors by a considerable margin. Audi has implemented groundbreaking technologies in the making of this car. The coupe does not feel wilder than any other Audi RS versions, but as soon as you start extending your throttle, it just goes like a complete maniac and you flick the wheel and it goes in the direction you choose. In fact, Audi has also set a benchmark for entry-level compact sports cars by bringing this car into the market. Audi has created a well-made pocket slice of perfection, and we recommend it.
