Overall Rating
The 4 Series for many at first glance might just be a rebadged 3 Series coupe at a higher price tag, but dig a little deeper and one would understand how it stands apart from the 3 Series, from which it shares most of its parts.
The 4 Series for many at first glance might just be a rebadged 3 Series coupe at a higher price tag, but dig a little deeper and one would understand how it stands apart from the 3 Series, from which it shares most of its parts. It has a sleeker presence, wider and flared wheel arches, sharper styling, and is more low slung, giving a sporty coupe vibe to it. The handling also seems to have improved and so is the aerodynamic efficiency.
The performance from the base of the engine is pretty brisk too and the fact that it also does not miss out on any of the features from the higher trim, it is better to save some money and opt for the xDrive AWD system which adds functionality to the car in adverse weather conditions.

The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupe is available in only two trims as BMW does not believe in making things too complicated in terms of trims at least. BMW packs in all the features and creature comfort right into the base trim and the higher trim gets only a larger set of wheels alongside the larger and more powerful inline-6 engine.

The new BMW 4-Series is powered by either of the two engine options, starting from the base trim, which gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood, producing 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque.
The higher trim gets a powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine that is rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and the power is sent to the rear wheels as standard, with an option for the xDrive system.

The BMW engine is the most powerful of the lot and hence makes the 4 Series the quickest in our acceleration tests by a huge margin. The similarly priced Audi A5 is a full second slower to 60 mph while the cheaper C-Class coupe is even slower than that. The Mercedes has a smaller engine and hence lower engine output results in a lackluster performance in this segment, while the A5 is the only car with a standard AWD system.
The 4 Series is powered by two turbocharged engines and both of them are pretty frugal to be used as a daily driver. The base four-cylinder engine class-leading fuel economy figures while the larger and more powerful inline-6 engine are also on par with the base four-cylinder engines of its rivals in terms of fuel efficiency.

The Audi A5 is the least efficient car in this comparison due to the standardization of the AWD system, while the Mercedes has marginally better fuel-efficiency ratings and a larger gas tank and yet falls short of the driving range of the BMW. The 4 Series coupe has the smallest fuel tank and yet offers the best driving range in this comparison.
We might have said that the car is different and all-new, but the cabin is all 3 Series with a perfect blend of premium materials, high build quality, and classy styling. The seating position is a bit lower than the 3 Series sedan which helps provide a more sporty feel from behind the wheel and when compared to the previous generation 3 Series coupe, there is more space all around the cabin.
The seats are well-bolstered and offer good levels of comfort and support in all driving conditions, while the large trunk aids in carrying a good amount of luggage for long-distance road trips.

The BMW 4 Series has the most spacious cabin amongst the three cars present here, and it also boasts of the largest boot as well. The A5 has a very tight cabin, especially at the back seat, while the Mercedes may only be marginally more compact than the BMW, the trunk is the smallest one here.
The 4 Series features the slightly updated iDrive infotainment system that gets a 6.5-inch screen as standard and one needs to update to the options screen for a more luxurious and premium experience.
The interface is pretty crisp and has sharp graphics, while responsiveness is pretty good too, only the chink in its armor is that it needs a few more clicks and twirls of the knob to get things done. The new touchpad that is placed on top of the controller can now be used to handwrite inputs which make controlling things easy while on the go.
For a layman, the all-new BMW 4 Series might look identical to the 3 Series from the front, but look closer and the sharper bumper styling, the air vent right behind the front wheels for better dissipation of air, the bold character line that starts from the front fender and goes all the way to the taillights, are all new for the 4 Series, apart from the obvious omission of two doors and the sloping coupe roofline.

Despite being larger in length than its rivals, the 4 Series is much lighter than either of them and also offers a longer wheelbase which opens up more space on the inside of the cabin. The Audi A5 is the heaviest of them all and also rides closest to the ground, while the C250 coupe has the highest ground clearance but is the shortest in length.
Being an all-new product, it is yet to be crash-tested by either of the crash testing agencies, but one can rest assured of safety standards as the 3 Series, with which it shares its underpinnings and many other parts, performs pretty well in the crash tests. There is also the inclusion of new-age safety functions which would only make the performance even better. The list is pretty long and a highlight of the available features is listed below.
The 2014 BMW 4 Series might have already received a bit of flak from the community for being a rebadged version of the 3 Series coupe, but we are glad to inform you that the car is a totally different beast altogether. It also outshines its rivals in terms of performance, frugality, and technology and yet manages to be competitive in the pricing section as well.
