Cruze is a good quality compact car from the American brand Chevrolet. Since 2011, when the car was first introduced, it has had a huge impact on the compact-car segment market.

Overview

Cruze is a good quality compact car from the American brand Chevrolet. Since 2011, when the car was first introduced, it has had a huge impact on the compact-car segment market. This helped Chevrolet be a brand to be considered once again, as this segment was always led by the Japanese car manufacturers with their great refinement and the overall package they offered.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

There are 5 main trims available: LS, LT, LTZ, Eco, and Diesel. The diesel-engined Cruze will be reviewed separately. The car gets 2 engine options. The price starts from $17,520 for the base variant and $23,805 for the top-of-the-line LTZ trim. Standard features on all the trims include 16-inch steel wheels, OnStar, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, a six-way adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat and a trip computer.

There are a few optional packages, except for the base level LS. The Technology package includes a rear-view camera and the Chevrolet MyLink interface, which bundles a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, voice control, and smartphone integration. The RS Appearance package (only LT and LTZ trims) features restyled front and rear fascias, rocker moldings, a rear spoiler, and more.

We Recommend

We recommend the LT trim with the manual transmission. It gets a better-turbocharged engine, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, and alloy wheels. The LT trim is much better equipped than the standard SE, and you can opt for a lot of extra features. We also suggest you get the Appearance package (though subjective).

Engine and Performance
7.6/10

The Cruze has 3 engine options on offer, a 1.8L I-4 which makes 138 hp @6300 rpm and 125 lb.-ft @3800 rpm, a 1.4L turbocharged I-4 which makes 138 hp @4900 rpm and 148 lb.-ft @1850 rpm, and a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 which makes 148 hp @4000 rpm and 258 lb.-ft @2000 rpm.

The sedan comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. We feel the 6-speed manual is the best option as the automatic feels very slow. The Cruze is a front-wheel-drive car. The sedan reaches the 60 mph mark in 9.5 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 17.3 seconds.

The Cruze performs so well that even if it is not the winner here, we’re really satisfied with what it delivers. It is a mid-performer, sits right between the other two in the case of everything except top-speed, where it has the least number. However, the Civic is a quick car and a 0-60 mph time of 9 seconds is very impressive. The Corolla can go the fastest, although reaching the 130-mph mark takes quite some time.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Cruze’s fuel economy is on the better side in this car segment. With figures of 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, it still manages to provide a better range. A tank size of 15.6 is very well done. The other two, though have better figures but are limited by their tank sizes. The sedan manages to offer a range of 561.6 miles on the highways.

The combined mileage of the other two cars is better by the Cruze mostly because the Cruze’s economy is somewhat lacking for city use. However, the range on the Cruze for the city stands at a healthy 390 miles, but the range for the highway is stupendous. Both Corolla and Civic stand together with a combined mileage of 31 mpg.

Interior
8.6/10

The cars in the compact-car segment often show a lot of signs of cost-cutting, and most of it is seen in the interiors of such cars. Hard plastics and somewhat rough touches are clear signs of such cost-cuttings. However, the Cruze offers a nice pleasant interior with its two-tone color scheme and hence looks more upmarket than the competition. The cabin is well organized and is very quiet. You have a lot of adjustments available, from the steering wheel as well as the seat to give you the seating posture you need.

Though most of the interior is simple in nature, it is very practical and usable. Comfort-wise, the front row seats are comfortable, and so are the rear seats. You can have a tall person driving the car and a tall person sitting behind him comfortably, without any issues. The only thing that could be worth a complaint was the width. It is not easy to fit 5 passengers in this car comfortably.

The Cruze does well at comfort for both the seat rows, but it is the interior spacing of the Corolla that provides a lot of space for the passengers. None of the cars come close to the corolla in terms of second-row leg space. When considering cargo capacity, the Cruze’s 15 cubic feet trunk is massive for a car of these proportions. The Civic and the Corolla have the usual range of trunk sizes that we usually see on cars of this segment. Some standout interior features on the Cruze include:

  • Cruise Control
  • Power steering
  • Keyless entry
  • Tilt and Telescopic Adjustable Steering Wheel
  • Heated front seats

How intuitive is the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze’s infotainment system?

The Cruze’s infotainment system places it in a very competitive position in this segment, all thanks to the update it received last year. As standard, you get Bluetooth phone connectivity, a six-speaker sound system with a CD/MP3 player, satellite radio, USB port, and an auxiliary audio jack.

An optional package offers the Chevrolet MyLink interface feature, which bundles a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, voice control, and smartphone integration. Some standout infotainment features include:

  • 7” Touchscreen
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • Radio data system
  • Smartphone integration

Exterior
7.5/10

The 2014 Cruze exterior does not stand out in the crowd but is rather simple to look at. The design of the Cruze is a conservative design. It is a straightforward car, with confident exterior lines, a bold stance, and the design has a sense of connectivity no matter what angle you look at it from.

The roofline arches back to a short trunk and merges well with the lines. The proportions are good, with the long hood and short trunk. Its design is pleasant and won't age quickly, even if it doesn't turn many heads.

The Cruze is a decent-sized car which is good on its looks. It is the heaviest, widest, and tallest in this comparison. The Civic is the lightest car in this comparison, and that explains its performance figures. The wheelbase of all three sedans is very similar at around 105 inches. Some noteworthy exterior features of the Cruze are:

  • Massive twin headlamps
  • Fog Lamps
  • Z-spec grille
  • Chrome finishes along the window panes
  • Rear spoiler

Safety
9.2/10

The Cruze scored a perfect 5-star rating in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA. As standard, all trims come with stability control, antilock brakes, full-length side curtain airbags, front knee airbags, and front and rear side-impact airbags as standard. A front-disc/rear-drum brake setup is standard on all models except the LT, LTZ, and Diesel, which are upgraded to four-wheel disc brakes.

Also, you get OnStar, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, and stolen-vehicle assistance. A rear-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, and a rear cross-traffic alert system are optional for all Cruzes except the LS. Here is a list of all the major safety features available with the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze-

  • OnStar System
  • Electronic Stability control
  • Post Collision Safety system
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Sensing Deactivation
  • Tire-Pressure Monitoring System

Final Verdict

The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze is an exceptionally well-made car and is simple and usable. It has a good economy, stylish interiors, and the engines pack a punch. It is priced reasonably and goes up against a couple of the best cars in this segment. If you are fed up with watching these Japanese compact sedans, the American Chevrolet Cruze would become a good pick for a change.
