Amazing car with some drawbacks

Pros

Gas mileage, Steering is soft

Cons

Cylinder deactivation, Transmission is clunky

I really like the rated gas mileage for this truck it is 16 city and 22 high way which is great for a truck this size. Another thing I love about driving this truck is that the steering wheel is very soft. I actually enjoy very much because it is very comfortable. I also like the interior. It is very spacious and the material is leather so it is easier to clean. However, I don’t really like the... Read more

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is one of the most sought-after full-size pickups in the business now. It comes with engine options – a 4.3L V6 engine.

Overview

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is one of the most sought-after full-size pickups in the business and gets a complete redesign this year. It comes with a new 4.3L V6 engine option which comes as standard and is available in 3 different trims with the regular cab. With more horsepower under its hood, it manages to tow a maximum of 11,200 lbs now and has a payload capacity of over 2,000 lbs.

With improved structural integrity, the interior of the redesigned Silverado 1500 gets improved materials and build quality even on the lower trims. Prices start at an MSRP of $25,205 for the base WT RWD variant and go all the way to $34,640 for the LT 4WD trim, which is the top-end trim for the regular cab body style.

It faces competition from other midsize pickup trucks like the Ford F-150, Toyota Tundra, and the RAM 1500.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 regular cab is available in two different trims; WT/LT. Both of these are powered by a 4.3 L V6, while the 5.3 L V8 is available as an option. WT stands for a work truck and is available in two different sub trim levels namely 1WT and 2WT. The 1WT is the most basic version and comes with features such as 17-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, power windows and door locks, rubber covering, four-speaker AM/FM sound system with USB, and so on.

We Recommend

Although it is quite hard to recommend just one trim because this full-size pickup truck comes in a wide variety of powertrains, cabin styles as well as bed lengths, in terms of well-equipped and value for money package, we would recommend the LT trim which starts at a reasonable $31,130 and comes with an adequate amount of features. The LT has features like an E-Z lift tailgate, alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and so on which makes it a very compelling package.

Engine and Performance
7.9/10

There are two engine options for the Silverado 1500 – are the 4.3 L V6, and the 5.3 L V-8. Both these engines are available in Regular Cab form, and hence the range starts with the 4.3 V6 that produces 285 hp and 305 pound-feet of torque. This is matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission and is offered in both rear and all-wheel-drive trims. The 5.3 L V8 engine produces 355 hp and 383 pound-feet of torque. This is then paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. A more powerful 6.2 L V8 is available in other body styles but not on the regular cab.

One can see from the table that all the three competitors have performance that is very much similar. However, it is the RAM 1500 that has the best performance credentials in the lot. The Ford produces the least amount of power and this translates to the mediocre acceleration figures as well. The Chevrolet Silverado is decent in terms of performance both on paper and on the road. It also has excellent towing capacity when compared to the RAM.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

One does not expect very high MPG figures from this category generally, and this case is no exception either. We have the Silverado 1500 with its V6 engine returning a combined figure of 20 MPG, which translates to 18 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. This drops down by one MPG if you opt for a four-wheel-drive. The 5.3 L V6 achieves 19 MPG combined, 16 MPG in the city, and 23 MPG on the highway. But when you add the fact that it has a 26-gallon tank, it returns a decent fuel range between 364 miles to 520 miles on a full tank of gas.

In comparison, all the Silverado is definitely competitive in terms of fuel efficiency. It is worth noting that the Chevrolet Silverado is one of the most fuel-efficient out of the lot. The RAM’s extra performance does pay a penalty in terms of fuel efficiency as we can see. The Silverado also has a very large tank size which puts its overall range much higher than that of the Ford or the RAM. Ford suffers the most in terms of overall range due to its relatively small 23-gallon tank.

Interior
7.8/10

With the current redesign, the cabin of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has improved a lot in terms of the quality of materials used and the build quality is quite impressive. It also has a lot of storage spaces, cup-holders, and USB ports, and so on that make it quite functional as well. Seats are rather comfortable and offer options such as heating, ventilation, and adjustable lumbar supports. One also gets the choice of choosing a bench seat or bucket seats in the front row.

Interior space feels pretty much the same regardless of which truck you go for. In terms of cargo space, the Ford offers the most of the lot at a whopping 59.9 cubic feet. The Chevrolet Silverado is somewhat in the middle with 53.2 ft.³ of storage. Some of its interior features include:

  • Audio and Cruise controls on steering wheel
  • Front and rear cupholders
  • Bucket front seats
  • Trip computer
  • Electric power steering
  • Single zone climate control

2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Infotainment unit

The infotainment unit on the 2014 model is a very simple unit without a touchscreen system but the MyLink interface is optional and comes with an 8-inch touchscreen system that is intuitive and easy-to-use. It can be slow to respond at times but has effective voice control. There are three months of satellite radio subscription, speed-sensitive volume control, auxiliary and USB inputs as well as four speakers. Few standout infotainment features available with the pickup are-

  • Three months satellite radio subscription
  • USB connection
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • 4-speaker sound system
  • Optional 8-inch touchscreen navigation

Exterior
7.0/10

Chevrolet has introduced a host of upgrades for the Silverado 1500 this year and makes the truck much more modern than its previous model. These include LED exterior lighting – headlights, fog lights, and taillights alike and a revised hood design as well. The Silverado is 230.2 inches long, 80 inches wide, and 73 8 inches tall. It has a ground clearance of 9.0 inches and has a wheelbase that is 143.5 inches. It weighs in at 5099 pounds which is the lightest of its class.

After Chevrolet heavy emphasis on weight reduction, the RAM 1500 and Ford F-150 are heavier vehicles when compared to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The Ford F-150 is the longest and tallest car in the segment and measures 243.9 and 75.6 inches, respectively. However, it is the Chevrolet that provides the most ground clearance and this comes into play when you need to take it off the road. In terms of wheelbase, the Ford is considerably longer at 156.5 inches. Some standout exterior features include:

  • Dual chrome-tipped exhaust
  • All-terrain Blackwall tires
  • 17-inch rims
  • Polished exhaust tip
  • black molded splash guards
  • front license plate bracket
  • wheel locks

Safety
8.7/10

In the NHTSA crash test, the new Silverado 1500 secured five stars which is the highest rating possible and on the IIHS crash test, it earned an overall rating of 'Good' which again is the highest rating. Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear airbags, side curtain airbags, OnStar safety service, and so on. Some standout safety features include:

  • Child seat anchors
  • ABS and EBD
  • 4 wheel disc brakes
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Front and side airbags
  • curtain airbags
  • OnStar safety suite

Final Verdict

Even with the current redesign, Chevrolet has not increased the price of the Silverado by much and that is a very promising aspect. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is still a value for money option in the segment and promises a lot of features, good safety as well as amazing performance. It is certainly not the fastest all the one with the best interiors but remains a truly dependable workhorse that can be a worthy addition to your garage.
