About 2014 Ford Explorer

3.9

Overall Rating

The SUV market has undergone some serious up-gradation in recent times and the Ford Explorer has capably kept up.

The 2014 Ford Explorer is one of the first SUVs introduced in the market. The car is a spacious and off-road friendly vehicle that can move families across the terrain in comfort. The SUV market has undergone some serious up-gradation in recent times and the Ford Explorer has capably kept up. It offers power, fuel economy, and even refined and spacious interiors to make it perfectly capable as a daily use car.

The Ford Explorer has a unibody construction which gives it better fuel economy and more interior space. The interiors are well made and show great quality, allowing a capacity for 7 passengers. There are three engine options, a 290 horsepower V-6, a fuel-efficient 2.0L inline-4, and a turbocharged V-6 making 365 horsepower in the Sport trim. The Ford Explorer stands up to the likes of the Mazda CX-9 and the Chevrolet Traverse.

The XLT trim is the most feature-rich, and the 202A group upgrade still saves you a tiny bit of money and offers leather upholstery and other comforts. We further recommend going for the inline-4 motor for city driving as it saves $2,000 on every trim. The V-6 along with the 4WD seems a bit too onerous for urban commuting.

2014 Ford Explorer Review

Pros

  • Great cabin quality

Cons

The SUV market has undergone some serious up-gradation in recent times and the Ford Explorer has capably kept up.

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The Ford Explorer is offered in three trims, namely the XLT, the Limited trim, and the Sport trim. The first two trims are powered by a V-6 motor as standard, with an RWD system. The AD can be had at $2,000 more. The inline-4 engine with better fuel economy and lower power actually comes at a higher price tag than the V-6. The Sport trim has a turbocharged V-6 motor.

Engine and Performance
7.4/10

The standard engine on the 2014 Ford Explorer is a 3.5L V-6 that makes 290 horsepower and 255 foot-pounds of torque. All Ford Explorers have a 6-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain comes with a front-wheel-drive as standard, though a four-wheel-drive can be optionally purchased.

There is a frugal 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 motor on offer that puts up 240 horsepower and 270 foot-pounds of torque. Finally, the Explorer Sport comes with a 4WD exclusively and a turbocharged 3.5L V-6 motor making 365 horsepower and 360 foot-pounds of torque.

Compared to the competition, the 2014 Ford Explorer is a bit on the slower side to get going with its basic powertrain. The inline-4 is even slower to get started, though it does pick up as you gain speed. The Ford Explorer does have the best horsepower of the lot, though, in torque, the inline-4 motor is ways ahead.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The inline-4 motor does manage to considerably lower the fuel economy of this Ford SUV. the 240 horsepower inline-4 turbocharged motor manages to get 20 mpg in cities, 28 mpg on highways, and 23 mpg combined. The inline-4 motor is optional and only available in front-wheel-drive. The V-6 motor manages 17 mpg in cities, 24 on highways, and 20 mpg combined. The Explorer Sport on the other hand offers 16 mpg in cities, 22 mpg on highways, and 18 mpg combined.

Compared to the competition the inline-4 motor is by far the best in the segment. The V-6 is also well refined and offers efficiency which is a bit on the better side. The Ford Explorer has an 18.6-gallon fuel tank that allows it to go up to 380 miles on a full charge. The Chevrolet Traverse has the best fuel capacity in the competition at 22 gallons.

Interior
7.0/10

The Ford Explorer has loads of space in the cabin. The SUV comes configured for 7 seats, though 8 seats can be optionally had. The seats are perfectly comfortable and well supported. Softer cushions have enough side bolstering to keep you held along turns. The Sport trim has sportier cloth seats on offer. The front and the middle row of seats have great headroom and legroom, even with the sunroof.

The third-row seats are pretty cramped for adults, though they can easily fit children. The Explorer has a fold-away third-row seat, which can even be had power-operated optionally. Fold the third and the second rows and the SUV offers up 81 cubic feet of maximum storage space.

With all the rows facing up the Explorer offers 21 cubic feet of luggage space. The Chevrolet Traverse offers better luggage space, though for a family the Ford would be exceptionally adequate. The second-row legroom in the Mazda CX-9 and the Ford Explorer is similar and spacious. Some standout interior features in the Explorer are:

  • Tilting and telescopic steering column
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Memory driver's seat
  • Power driver's seat

Exterior
7.5/10

The Ford Explorer has sharp angles and lines almost reminiscent of the original SUV, though in modern years it has become more road-car-like. The body and the frame of the car speak of a highly refined and tastefully made design, although it is heavily influenced by Volvo’s design inputs in the past.

The high-performance Explorer Sport is the most car-like trim, and offers a large 20-inch wheel, with gloss black accents. The Explorer is much smaller than the large Expedition, yet still manages to retain a much more imposing look than a minivan or sedan.
