2014 Ford Mustang Review

Since Ford wants to make big changes for the 2015 model year, the 2014 model year does not see any changes to the lineup.

The Ford Mustang has had the hearts of American purists and car enthusiasts worldwide for decades now and with the newer generation of Mustang almost on its way, it still offers thrills, style, and value in a completely sorted manner. The completely redesigned Mustang is expected to arrive next year, but that does not reduce the desirability of the current Mustang in any which way.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2014 Mustang is offered in only two trims, the Base and the Premium trims. There is also a convertible and a GT which employs the larger and much powerful V8 engine, but Ford has discontinued the Boss 302 variant for this model year. Limited slip differential, Recaro sport seats, heated mirrors, and a leather steering wheel, all available as standard, make the Mustang a fun and yet practical car for most parts.

Considering the fact that most of the premium creature comforts are available on the higher trim, it would not be a bad choice to opt for that as it makes the Mustang an even more practical and comfortable car to be driven as a daily.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

The 2014 Mustang is powered by a 3.7-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine under the hood that powers the rear wheels only, through a 6-speed manual transmission. This naturally aspirated engine produces a whopping 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque which propels the car to 60 mph from standstill in a blistering fast 5.7 seconds. The quarter-mile finish line is crossed in a lightning-quick 14.4 seconds and it maxes out at 135 mph on the freeway. Regardless of the drivetrain choice, Mustangs are known to provide a joyful and exhilarating ride.

The Ford Mustang is the most affordable pony car but also has the lowest power output amongst the three American greats. The Chevrolet Camaro which boasts of the higher power figures is four-tenths of a second slower to 60 mph and one-tenth of a second slower on the quarter-mile drag strip. The Challenger too is let down by its heft and is the slowest in all aspects.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

American muscle power and efficiency don’t really go hand in hand but the V6 engine powering the coupe isn’t as thirsty as its larger counterpart. The EPA rates the 2014 Mustang V6 for 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, whereas the combined driving fuel economy is rated at 22 mpg. To compensate for the low fuel economy figures, Ford employs a sizable 16-gallon gas tank which assists to be driven for over 450 miles on the highway, before having to hit the gas station.

The Camaro is the least efficient amongst the pony car lineup and employs a larger fuel tank which translates to a much larger driving range of well over 500 miles on the highway. The Dodge Challenger falls in between but features the largest fuel tank and therefore has the longest combined driving range between the three.

Interior
7.0/10

The worst thing about the interiors of the Mustang is that a large part of the interior panels including the dashboard and the doors, make use of hard plastics which lets the overall feel down. Also, don’t know what Ford was thinking of providing the steering column with no telescopic adjustability.

Even then, finding a comfortable seating position for the driver isn’t that difficult as the higher trim does get 8-way electric adjustability for the driver’s seat. At the rear, the seat is a bit cramped for adults, as one would expect of a coupe, and hence is better suited for younger individuals. At the front though, there is no lack of space and the trunk capacity is pretty solid too at 13.4 cu-ft.

Only the Dodge Challenger is rated to seat 5 occupants and also has the rear seat space to match that. It offers more legroom and headroom at the back and both the front and rear seats are much wider than the other two as well. It also has the largest trunk of them all and hence is the most desirable of the lot, in terms of interior space. The Camaro on the other hand lies on exactly the other end of the spectrum.

  • 8-Way Driver Seat w/Manual Recline and Manual Rear Seat Easy Entry
  • Leather Front Bucket Seats
  • 50-50 Folding Bench Rear Seat
  • Leather and Aluminum Steering Wheel
  • Garage Door Transmitter
  • Optional Recaro Leather Sport Seats
  • Remote Keyless Entry w/Integrated Key Transmitter

How is the 2014 Ford Mustang’s infotainment system?

The interior of the Mustang can now be appointed with all the latest technology and gadgets that Ford has to offer, to keep up with the modern times. Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system makes life easy with voice activation commands, navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity.

The physical buttons though don’t provide a good feel but the overall interface of the infotainment system is pretty clean and intuitive to use.

  • Ford SYNC 3 infotainment system
  • 8-speaker 370W Shaker Sound System
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 6 months complimentary subscription
  • A built-in voice-activated navigation system
  • Bluetooth wireless audio streaming and phone connectivity
  • AppLink and SYNC Services w/911 Assist

Exterior
8.0/10

The new Ford Mustang has aged well and although the design is now 9 years old, the sleek round headlamps, with the large grille, straight and bold body lines and the low slung profile of the car, show that it means business.

There are tons of customization options available even from the factory floor which includes Hood & Side Stripes, Over-The-Top Racing Stripe, a GT Spoiler, and hundreds of other third-party accessories to choose from.

The Mustang is the most compact coupe in terms of dimensions in this comparison. The Dodge Challenger is the largest and hence offers acres of more space inside its cabin. Hence, it is also the heaviest of the lot while the Mustang is the lightest, which aids it in achieving higher fuel efficiency. The ground clearance is also quite similar between the two whereas the Camaro is over an inch closer to the ground.

Safety
8.8/10

Though the Mustang is made for all-out performance and is meant for going sideways, that does not mean that Ford has overlooked the safety aspect of it. In fact, it has done well to implement quite sound engineering practices and also bake in a considerable amount of safety features which together help it achieve an overall 4-star rating out of the possible 5-stars in the NHTSA safety report. It also performed decently well in the crash test conducted by the IIHS. There various nifty little safety features that make a lot of difference overall, some of which are listed below.

  • AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Driveline Traction Control
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Front Airbags, Seat-Mounted Side Airbags, and Side Airbag Head Extension
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Mykey System w/Top Speed Limiter, Programmable Sound Chimes and Beltminder w/Audio Mute

Final Verdict

The 2014 Ford Mustang is facing the heat from its arch-rivals the Camaro and the Challenger. On one hand, the Camaro offers more power and a better-equipped interior with superior build quality, whereas, on the other hand, the Challenger offers its uber-cool retro styling and abundant interior space. Despite that, the Mustang’s superior performance and high-reliability quotient have enough might to keep it well within the game of ponies.
