Overall Rating

The Ford Taurus is one of the most successful American cars ever made. It is a full-size family sedan, and it is a people’s favorite. The car has been a classic legend, and in 2010 the car received a complete overhaul. Since then, the car has been a complete package for people wanting a full-size sedan. We recommend the Limited trim. Apart from its excellent interior styling and high comfort, it offers the most features, has good fuel economy figures, and comes with equipment such as adjustable seats, auto-dimming, and is better safety equipped. You also have the option of a turbocharged engine.

Pros

  • Huge trunk
  • Quiet ride
  • Very fuel efficient
  • High safety rating

Cons

  • Drives like a big car
  • The 20” tires harsh ride
  • Very expensive top trim

The Ford Taurus is one of the most successful American cars ever made. It is a full-size family sedan, and it is a people’s favorite.

The Ford Taurus is one of the most successful American cars ever made. It is a full-size family sedan, and it is a people’s favorite. There are 4 main trims available, namely SE, SEL, Limited, and SHO. The top-end SHO trim will be reviewed separately. The price starts from $26,780 and goes all the way up to $34,280 for the top-of-the-line Limited trim. All the trims get 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, integrated blind-spot mirrors, LED tail lights, an exterior-access keypad, cruise control, air-conditioning with rear seat vents, a six-way power driver seat (manual recline), a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack as standard.

We Recommend

We recommend the Limited trim. Apart from its excellent interior styling and high comfort, it offers the most features, has good fuel economy figures, and comes with equipment such as adjustable seats, auto-dimming, and is better safety equipped. You also have the option of a turbocharged engine.

Engine and Performance
7.4/10

The Ford Taurus comes with 3 engine options. The base engine, a 3.5 L V6 makes 288 hp @6500 rpm and 254 lb.-ft @4000 rpm. The other engine is a more powerful version of this engine, available only on the SHO trim. This engine is a 3.5L V6 twin-turbocharged engine.

It makes 365 hp @5500 rpm and 350 lb.-ft @1500 rpm. Both the engine options are coupled with a 6-speed shiftable auto. The Taurus is available as an all-wheel-drive or as a front-wheel-drive car. Also, optional on the SE, front-drive SEL and Limited models is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that's rated at 240 hp and a stout 270 lb-ft of torque.

The Taurus’s performance is nowhere close to its rivals. It actually is the slowest car in this comparison and loses by nearly 2 seconds. Although the numbers are an improvement from last year. It clocks a 0-60 mph in about 8.4 seconds, with the quarter-mile coming up in 16 seconds. Also, the top speed has also improved since last year. Even though all the 3 cars considered are 3.5/3.6 -liter engines, it is the 300 that is the star of this show with its high numbers.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The Taurus has really good mileage numbers. The economy it offers is among the best in this class. For a full-sized family sedan, fuel economy also becomes an important aspect. The Taurus’s numbers stand at 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The sedan comes with a fuel tank capacity of 19 gallons, which results in a highway range of 551 miles.

The Chrysler 300 has the highest numbers, with the range at 370.5 miles in the city and 585 on the highway. The Taurus stands close with good fuel economy figures as well as a great range of 361 miles in the city and 551 miles on the highway.

Interior
7.7/10

The 2014 Taurus’s interior is one of the best interiors to be in. It is very classy, has top-notch finishes, and has a sense of premium to it. The interior is big. There are a lot of features all around you.

The seats offer a lot of comfort in both rows. You also have the option of high-tech multi-contour seats which have an in-built massage. A remarkably wide center console and a wraparound instrument panel firmly divide the front area into driver and passenger zones.

It really feels more like a touring coupe than an upright four-door sedan. The generously sized seats are comfortable and supportive for long trips. However, there are a few problems. First of all, getting into the rear seat is not easy. Then there is not enough legroom and headroom available due to the low roofline. In comparison, all three cars have similar amounts of space for both rows. However, the 300 is slightly ahead in terms of rear-seat comfort. When considering cargo capacity, the Taurus’s 20.1 cubic feet trunk is gigantic for the segment. A few stand-out interior features are:

  • Ambient lighting
  • Heated mirrors
  • Remote Ignition
  • Paddle shifters
  • Cruise Control

How intuitive is the 2014 Ford Taurus’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system on the Malibu is so informative that we had to really take a thorough look at everything it does. With the base trim, you have limited features as standard. However, from the SEL trim onwards, you get MyFord touch, two USB ports, an SD card reader, RCA video/audio input jacks, expanded Sync functionality (including traffic updates and turn-by-turn directions), and an additional center speaker. The Limited trim offers a 12-speaker Sony sound system with HD radio and navigation system. Some standout infotainment features include:

  • MyFord Touch (includes a large center touchscreen plus two additional displays in the gauge cluster)
  • USB Connection
  • Expanded Sync functionality
  • Navigation system
  • HD Radio
  • CD Player
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • MP3 Player

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2014 Ford Taurus showcases new wheel designs and we love it. The low-profile look of the 2014 Ford Taurus has stayed since 2010, and it's a familiar profile on the roads. Long wheelbase, a lot of width, and around 203 inches of length, these dimensional impacts give the car a low, powerful sedan look.

The sculpted character lines and strong shoulders of the rear and side profiles are some of the most interesting facets of the five-year-old design. Most find the Taurus stylish and closer to current Ford designs. The Taurus looks sportier with the LED taillights. The car has a total length of 202.9 inches. It is 76.9 inches wide, 60.7 tall, and has a wheelbase of 112.9 inches.

Differences in dimensions and overall proportions are pretty significant. The 300 is massive on wheelbase, leaving the Taurus’s 112.9 inches of wheelbase far behind. The Taurus is big on length as it should be. When it comes to curb weight, Ford Taurus is the heaviest and widest on the block, whereas the Impala is the lightest on the block. Major exterior highlights of the sedan include:

  • Rear spoiler
  • Xenon Headlamps
  • Sunroof
  • Alloy Wheels
  • LED taillights

Safety
9.8/10

The Ford Taurus scores highly in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and procures a 5-star rating. As standard, antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, and integrated blind spot mirrors are present. A rear-view camera and rear parking sensors are standard on the Limited trim and optional on the SEL.

Optional on the Limited trim are a pre-collision warning system with automatic brake intervention (included with adaptive cruise control), lane-keeping assist, and a blind-spot warning system that's bundled with a cross-traffic warning system (which warns you of approaching cars or pedestrians when backing up). Some standout safety specifications include:

  • Lane assist
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
  • Post-collision safety system
  • Child Seat Anchors
  • Tire-Pressure Monitoring System

Final Verdict

With all the upgrades, the 2014 Taurus is a complete package. It has amazing features, is a very safe and practical car, and performance is on par as well. We feel there are head-to-head competitors out there, but everything that the Taurus offers is hard to let go of. For the people who want to buy their next full-sized family sedan, we do recommend the Taurus.
