About 2014 Jeep Compass

3.1

Overall Rating

The 2014 Jeep Compass hits the US market at a very competitive price of $18,695. It features the Thule turfed four-cylinder engine that produces 158 hp and is available in a wide variety of powertrain options. The 2014 model receives a new transmission option as well as a minor styling update.

Jeep has been having quite a tough time in the market lately. The majority of Compass upgrades we see today have been done on a later stage after the car’s inception in 2007. For 2011, Jeep redesigned the Compass and made its closeup to the Grand Cherokee, while sustaining the basic identity. The 2011 Jeep Compass received vital improvements over the previous models that included a revised suspension for better ride quality, a revised interior fitted with more standard equipment.

The 2014 Compass recently received some updates to remedy some of its flaws, but even Jeep knows that the aging Compass really needs to be overhauled to bring in more customers. However, while a new Compass is still in development, Jeep has provided the current generation with some additional features to keep the Jeep relevant in the face of its competitors. Read our detailed analysis to know more about the 2014 Jeep Compass.

We’d suggest opting for the Latitude AWD variant since it comes with a capable all-wheel drive system, a slightly enhanced feature set and also offers additional options if you wish to opt for them. The Limited trim seems a little overpriced since it doesn’t offer that many additional features for the price increase.

Read our detailed analysis to know more about the 2014 Jeep Compass.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2014 Jeep Compass is available in a choice of three trim levels - Sport, Latitude and Limited. Standard feature list itself is quite skimpy with 16 inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, four speaker sound system with CD player and audio jack and so on being its notable features. All of the trims offer a choice in drivetrain between 4x2 and 4x4.

The Jeep compass gets optional packages such as the Altitude edition package, Freedom Drive II Off-Road Group, Security and Cargo Convenience group, Sun and Sound group and trailer Tow Prep group. The Latitude trim is much more well-equipped and is eligible for a lot more optional packages than the bare-bones Sport trim.

We Recommend

We recommend you to go with the Latitude trim as it has almost all the features to keep you comfortable under different conditions. The Latitude is also eligible for a lot of optional packages and has better interior quality overall as well. The price difference of about $3800 for the trim is quite justified when you consider the package it offers.

Engine and Performance
5.4/10

The Jeep Compass has a wide choice of powertrains starting with a 2 L four-cylinder engine that produces 158 hp and 141 pound feet of torque for the front-wheel-drive Sport and Latitude trim levels. A five-speed manual transmission is standard while a six speed automatic or CVT transmission are optional.

One also gets a 2.4 L four-cylinder engine that produces 172 hp and 165 pound feet of torque. There is also the choice of an optional all-wheel-drive drivetrain while the car comes with front-wheel-drive as standard. Apart from this one also gets a four-wheel-drive system with Low range gearing and Hill descent control.

One can see that the base engine on the Jeep is not the most powerful engine in its category. Both rivals, the Honda CR-V and the Subaru Forester offered much more powerful engines and the Forester performs the best in the 0-60 mph timings. Even when equipped with the 2.4 L optional engine, the Jeep does not match the 0-60 mph timings of its rivals.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Because it is offered in a wide range of powertrains, the fuel efficiency ratings of the Jeep Compass vary according to the choice you have opted for. EPA estimates for the 2 L engine with front-wheel-drive and five-speed manual transmission are 26 MPG combined, 23 MPG city and 30 mpg highway. With a six speed automatic, this drops to 24 MPG combined, 21 mpg city and 28 MPG highway. The CVT performed slightly better with 24 MPG combined, 22 MPG city and 27 MPG highway.

One can see that the most powerful rival, the Honda CR-V performs much better in terms of fuel efficiency figures than the Jeep Compass. Even the all-wheel-drive Subaru is not much worse compared to the front-wheel-drive and less powerful Jeep. One should also note that with a 2.4 L engine, five-speed manual and front-wheel-drive, the Jeep is rated at 25 MPG combined which drops to 24 MPG combined in the six speed automatic. Equipped with four-wheel-drive, the figures stay somewhat the same and hence represents a better compromise.

Interior
6.4/10

The 2014 model year sees a slight upgrade in terms of the materials used in its interiors especially for the higher trim levels. The leather quality is better but the dashboard still has a lot of hard plastics.

The front seats are comfortable even though it might feel narrow to some passengers. Rear seat legroom is also quite tight and the cargo space is quite less compared to its rivals as well.

The Jeep offers plenty of space when you compare it to its rivals, with one of its biggest drawbacks - rearseat legroom still being the best in class. However, when you compare the cargo capacities one can see that the Jeep truly suffers in this department. Also to note is that many features that is standard on its rivals right from the base trim onwards are optional even on higher trims of the Jeep.

Infotainment features of the 2014 Jeep Compass

When you look at infotainment features offered in the Jeep, the system feels pretty archaic. The base trim is pretty barebones with a 4-speaker audio system and minimal connectivity options, but as you climb up the trims, things do change for good but do not improve by a lot.

Features like Bluetooth and USB connectivity come as options with this acceptable from a $20,000 car. Some features include:

  • Optional Bluetooth
  • Optional Satellite radio
  • Four-speaker audio system
  • Optional driver information display
  • Optional touchscreen interface with 28 GB music storage
  • Optional nine speaker Boston Acoustics sound system

Exterior
5.5/10

The exteriors of the Jeep Compass remind us of its larger and more well-equipped siblings in a very good way. Even though it has been the same generation since 2007, the car still looks pretty good and receives minor upgrades here and there to keep it fresh.

One of the biggest selling point off the Jeep Compass is also this very fact. In terms of dimensions however, it is one of the smallest vehicles of its class and understandably so since it is based on a hatchback chassis.

The Jeep Compass is the lightest vehicle in its class and understandably so due to its modest dimensions. It is evenly matched against its competitors only terms of wheelbase and width. Despite this however, it does not suffer in terms of interior space offered but fails to compensate the deficits with its small cargo capacity. Some features include:

  • Tires - Front All-Season
  • Tires - Rear All-Season
  • Aluminum Wheels
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Trailer Hitch Receiver

Safety
7.2/10

Jeep has not cut corners in terms of safety and the Compass receives four out of five stars in NHTSA crash testing. This is a respectable score especially considering it is an SUV.

Safety features however are not plenty with the standard features being antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front seats side airbags and front seat curtain airbags - with the passenger side side airbag being standard only from this year. More advanced safety features come only as an option and mostly only in higher trims.

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control
  • Airbags
  • ABS and Drive Traction Control

Final Verdict

Unless one is a really struck by the appeal of a Jeep-looking hatchback at the great price point, the Compass does not have much of an appeal. It's features are very bare-bones, performance is subpar, drinks more fuel than its rivals and offers less safety features as well. Overall it is an inferior car compared to the Honda CR-V and the Subaru Forester. We would definitely advise you to check out those two cars before putting your money down on a Jeep Compass.
