2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review

Pros

  • Premium luxurious cabin
  • Great off-road capability
  • Diesel engine great in fuel economy

Cons

  • Poor on reliability
  • Low mileage from the gas engine

Priced at $29,495 the Jeep Grand Cherokee faces competition with the Subaru Outback, GMC Acadia, and the Nissan Pathfinder.

Overview

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of Chrysler's best production. It is well built and great to drive, whether you are on the road or belly deep in mud. For 2014, the Grand Cherokee gets a new 8-speed automatic transmission and an available turbo-diesel V6 engine. The exterior styling has been refreshed too for a bolder look.

The 2014 Grand Cherokee is priced at $29,495 and it comes with two engines- a 290-hp V6 and a 360-hp V8. Both the engines are capable of city driving and off-road ventures. Its cabin is a good mixture of functionality and tech-oriented. The Grand Cherokee faces competition from the Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Jeep is known to be generous when it comes to standard features- Carbuzz

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in 6 trims mainly. The names of the trims are Laredo, Laredo E, Altitude Limited, Overland, and Summit. There is also a $ 64,895 Grand Cherokee SRT available, which we have reviewed separately. Both RWD and 4WD configurations are available on all trims.

The Grand Cherokee has a starting price of $29,495 for the base Laredo trim and goes high up to $51,195 for the fully-equipped Summit variant. All the features are nicely distributed among the six trim levels and Jeep also offers a few optional creature comforts in the form of packages for some trims.

Buying Advice

We would recommend you to go with the Limited trim. It is a more value-for-money option. Priced at just $36,495, it offers features like dual A/C, 8.4-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and many others.

Engine and Performance
7.7/10

Owners who end up with a middle-grade Grand Cherokee are likely to be happy with its driving dynamics- Autoblog

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is powered by a 3.6L V6 engine delivering 290 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque. It comes with an RWD setup having an 8-speed automatic transmission. A 5.7L V8 is also available that makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. of torque. Certain trims can also opt for a turbo-diesel V6 engine.

The Grand Cherokee also comes with off-road modes for better traction and wheel grip during wetlands scenarios. When it comes to handling, the Grand Cherokee balances its body roll nicely but the ride quality is not that comfortable. The steering is precise but it feels dull. It is the only off-road capable SUV in its class.

The Grand Cherokee's heavy curb weight doesn't let it perform well on the road. It takes 7.6 seconds to sprint to 60 MPH while the quarter-mile distance is covered in 15.9 seconds. For better acceleration, choose the V8 as it does the same in 6.5 seconds. Its heavy curb weight assists a bit when it comes to braking, taking 125 feet.

The Grand Cherokee is by far the most powerful SUV here but its performance stats are disappointing. The less-powerful Hyundai Santa Fe Sport amazes with its quick acceleration followed by the Ford Edge. The Nissan Murano also manages to accelerate quicker than the Grand Cherokee.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

With a high curb weight and two old-school engines, the Grand Cherokee never delivered stellar gas mileage figures- Carbuzz

Although the base V6 pumps more power, the Jeep Grand Cherokee manages to keep up with its classmates in terms of fuel economy. It returns 17 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway, and 20 MPG combined. Opting for the 4WD system slightly cuts off fuel economy by 1 MPG.

The optional 5.7L V8 engine further dips the fuel economy to 13 MPG in the city, 19 MPG on the highway, and 17 MPG combined. Unless you participate in heavy towing, this engine is not advisable for fuel-conscious people. In its most efficient form, the Grand Cherokee can deliver up to 432 miles combined.

The fuel ratings of the Ford Edge and the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport are identical but the former delivers a bit more range owing to a larger tank. On the other hand, the Nissan Murano's fuel economy is very similar to the Grand Cherokee but again, the latter's driving range easily beats any rival here.

Build quality is top-notch in the Grand Cherokee- Edmunds

The Jeep Grand Cherokee can seat 5 passengers in total comfort. As you go inside the cabin, you will be satisfied to see all things lined with premium materials. Some of the materials are said to have been increased in quality and the top-spec Summit model features an appealing suede-like finish for the A-pillars and roof.

It is the cloth upholstery that comes as standard, however, you can opt for the leather upholstery if you want it. It also has dual-zone climate control and a push-button to ease things out. The front seats are quite comfortable. The comfort level on the rear seats is satisfactory because of its low headroom and legroom.

The Grand Cherokee is quite generous in offering a massive cargo space of 36.3 cu-ft which can be said to be the best in the segment. Folding the rear seats through the 60/40 split exposes a maximum cargo space of 68.3 cu-ft., which stacks behind many midsize SUVs in the segment.

The dashboard of the Jeep Cherokee now houses a 5-inch touchscreen for infotainment services. An 8.4-inch touchscreen system is also present which can be equipped to all the models but is restricted to the Laredo trim. The interface is easy to use and houses media apps like Pandora and iHeartRadio. Some other features are:

  • 8-way adjustable power driver and passenger seats
  • Multi-level heating
  • Rear ventilation ducts
  • Split-folding rear seatback

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV has a familiar look that has worn well- Kelly Blue Book

The Jeep Grand Cherokee received a pretty substantial refresh for 2014. The trademark seven-slot grille is now shorter while the lower grille section has been revised and changes slightly with each of the trim levels. The headlights are now slimmer and feature xenon lighting and LED DRLs across the range. Overall, the front-end looks ruggedly stylish.

At the rear, the taillights are now larger and use LED illumination. The bumpers have been tweaked, the spoiler's larger, and the tailgate offers great visibility.  The Grand Cherokee runs on 17-inch alloy but 18 and 20-inch polished aluminum wheels are also available on higher trims.  It also has an optional off-road package that includes an adjustable air suspension.

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport grabs the attention for its short wheelbase, which actually doesn't affect its cabin room. The short length of the Ford Edge can translate for easy maneuverability at tight turns. At 3,823 pounds, the Nissan Murano is the lightest vehicle here. Some other exterior features are:

  • 17-20-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Black grille w/ chrome accents
  • Black window trim
  • LED DRLs & taillights
  • Fog lamps
  • Fully automatic projector-beam headlights

Safety
9.1/10

Unfortunately, the only active safety feature that comes standard is blind-spot monitoring- CarAndDriver

As far as safety is concerned, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has performed decently in the crash tests. NHTSA has conducted the crash-test safety and the Grand Cherokee has received an overall rating of 4 stars out of 5 for RWD models and 5 stars for 4WD models. As for IIHS, it gave 'Good' ratings in a few crash tests.

One of the main shortcomings of the Grand Cherokee is the lack fs of standard driver assistance features. All of them are available on the higher trims, leaving the base Laredo trim a bare bone in terms of safety. There are no packages available for this trim. Some of the important safety features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Hands-free park assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Competition
8.0/10

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2014 Nissan Murano

The Nissan Murano is available with just one engine but it delivers a smooth ride and raises confidence with its handling tactics. While its towing capacity is less, it is much more efficient than the Grand Cherokee. The cabin is built with high-quality materials and while it feels roomy, its cargo space is on the lower side.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2014 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge gives a tight competition to the Grand Cherokee in terms of performance. Drivers will also appreciate its composed handling and smooth ride. The cabin may feel underwhelming and its infotainment interface is finicky to use but soon the plus side, the cargo space is better than the Grand Cherokee.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

While the base engine is underpowered, the optional engine of the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is on the punchier side. You get a lot of standards and optional for the price. Apart from this, the interior is airy and nicely designed with good cargo space. However, many critics have complained about poor rear visibility.

Final Verdict

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee gives a good on-road experience along with a legendary odd-road capability too. The interior reflects premiumness and the cabin is well designed to give a modern look. Even the handling section is something that deserves appreciation.
