2014 Jeep Patriot Review

The 2014 Jeep Patriot hits the US market at a very competitive price of $16,195. It features a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produces 158 hp.

The 2014 Jeep Patriot hits the US market at a very competitive price of $16,195. It features a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produces 158 hp. Apart from this, you get a wide variety of transmission options as well as a different engine option. The 2014 model receives a new optional 6-speed automatic transmission. It also receives standard safety features across the line-up such as front-seat side airbags.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2014 Jeep Patriot is available in a choice of three trim levels - Sport, Latitude, and Limited. Features on the base trim are quite bare-bones with 16-inch steel wheels, roof rails, fog lights, cruise control, cloth upholstery, four-speaker sound system with CD player, and so on. All of the trims offer a choice in drivetrain between 4x2 and 4x4. The Jeep Patriot gets optional packages such as the Altitude Edition package, High Altitude Edition, Security and Cargo Convenience group, Sun and Sound group, and Freedom Drive II Off-Road group. The Latitude trim is much more well-equipped and is eligible for a lot more optional packages than the bare-bones Sport trim.

We Recommend

We recommend you to go with the Latitude trim as it has almost all the features to keep you comfortable under different conditions. The Latitude is also eligible for a lot of optional packages and has better interior quality overall as well. The price difference of about $4,500 for the trim is quite justified when you consider the package it offers.

Engine and Performance
5.6/10

The Jeep Patriot offers a lot of choice in terms of powertrains - a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produces 158 hp and 141 pound-feet of torque is standard on front-wheel-drive Sport and Latitude trim levels. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while six-speed automatic or CVT transmissions are optional.

One also gets a 2.4L four-cylinder engine that produces 172 hp and 165 pound-feet of torque optional on the Sport and Latitude front-wheel-drive cars. This engine comes standard on all all-wheel-drive cars as well as on the Limited models. Apart from this, one also gets a four-wheel-drive system with the CVT transmission and if you equip the off-road package.

One can see that the base engine on the Jeep itself is more powerful than its more expensive rivals in the segment. Both rivals, the Buick Encore and the Subaru Crosstrek offer engines that are down on power but perform better in the 0-60 mph timings. Even when equipped with the 2.4L optional engine, the Jeep does not match the 0-60 mph timings of its rivals.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Since the SUV is offered in a wide range of powertrains, the fuel efficiency ratings of the Jeep Patriot will vary according to the choice you have opted for. EPA estimates for the 2.0L engine with front-wheel-drive and five-speed manual transmission are 25 MPG combined, 23 MPG city, and 30 mpg highway. With a six-speed automatic, this drops to 24 MPG combined, 21 mpg city, and 28 MPG highway. The CVT performs slightly better with 24 MPG combined, 22 MPG city, and 27 MPG highway.

One can see that the Buick Encore performs much better in terms of fuel efficiency figures than the Jeep. Even with the all-wheel-drive capability, the Subaru performs also better compared to the front-wheel-drive and less powerful Jeep. One should also note that with a 2.4L engine, five-speed manual, and front-wheel-drive, the Jeep is rated at 25 MPG combined, which drops to 24 MPG combined in the six-speed automatic. Equipped with a four-wheel drive, the figures stay somewhat the same and hence represent a better compromise since the car is suited for off-road in any way.

Interior
6.4/10

The Jeep’s interior looks very practical and utilitarian. However plastic quality is very disappointing, and the overall build is bad. The base trim also represents a lack of any sort of power accessories. The one thing it has going for it is that the seats are very supportive and comfortable.

Gauges are easy to read, and some good optional features make the car a much better experience to be with. The SUV comes with a cargo capacity of 23.0 cubic feet.

The Jeep offers plenty of space when you compare it to its rivals, which suffer a bit in terms of rear seat legroom. However, when you compare the cargo capacities, one can see that the Jeep really provides a lot in this department. With the seats up, it can fit 63.4 ft.³ of cargo which is excellent. However, one note is that many features that are standard on its rivals right from the base trim onwards are optional even on higher trims of the Jeep. Some of the interior features of the Jeep Patriot are:-

  • Power windows
  • Automatic climate control
  • Remote start
  • Keyless entry
  • Cargo area light
  • Tilt-adjustable steering wheel
  • Front and rear cup holders
  • Front and rear door pockets

2014 Jeep Patriot Infotainment features

One department where Jeep has yet to perform very well is infotainment. The base trim comes with a system that is pretty barebones with a 4-speaker audio system and minimal connectivity options, but as you climb up the trims, things do change for good but do not improve by a lot. Features like Bluetooth and USB connectivity come as options, which is unacceptable from a $20,000 car. Some major infotainment features include:

  • Satellite radio
  • Auxiliary audio input
  • USB port
  • A 115-volt outlet
  • Navigation system
  • An optional 9-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system

Exterior
6.0/10

The exterior design of the Jeep Patriot has split opinion into two camps. Even though it is soon heading for a model change or a stop in production, it now looks decent for most, excellent for some, and appalling for many.

One of the biggest selling points of the Jeep Patriot is also this very fact. It wheels to a very small section of people who are actually Jeep fans and want to see more of their true blue stuff. In terms of dimensions, however, it is not the largest vehicle in its class despite looking so.

The Subaru is the lightest vehicle in the class despite being equipped with all-wheel drive. The Subaru and Jeep are evenly matched against each other in terms of wheelbase and weight. The Buick Encore is the smallest car but also the heaviest and the one that offers the least ground clearance. When comparing the ground clearance, Subari stands tallest to the ground at 8.7 inches. Some exterior features include:

  • Rear Wiper/Washer
  • Halogen Tail Lights

Safety
7.8/10

The Jeep Patriot receives four out of five stars in NHTSA crash testing. It also scores a rating of ‘Good’ in moderate offset frontal overlap, side-impact test, and roof-strength tests. This is a respectable score, especially considering it is an SUV. Safety features however are not plentiful, with the standard features being antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front seats side airbags, and front-seat curtain airbags - with the passenger side airbag being standard only from this year. More advanced safety features come only as an option and mostly only in higher trims. Some safety features include:-

  • Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM)
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Rearview camera
  • Tire pressure monitoring

Final Verdict

The Jeep Patriot is a car that appeals to be a very certain section of buyers. Its features are very bare-bones, performance is subpar, drinks more fuel than its rivals, and offers fewer safety features as well. However, if you need a car to cut itself a new path and clear the trail, no better car you can pick for the price. We would definitely advise you to check out the rivals before putting your money down on a Jeep, but if you understand what you’re doing, you can’t go wrong.
