My 2014 Kia Sorento

Pros

This car drives awesome and it handles well along with the really nice stereo. It has satellite radio and decent speakers, The comfort of this vehicle is almost like a luxury car

Cons

The color....silver, Gasi mileage

This care drives awesome and is very comfortable to ride in. It has an awesome stero that is easy to use and the hands free tuning is cool. The rims on the car are actual rims and not hub caps. The gas mileage is ok but it could be better

2014 Kia Sorento Review

The 2014 Kia Sorento has acceptable performance and a reasonable number of amenities for an affordable midsize SUV. However, several competitors have more upscale interiors, larger cargo capacities, and stronger base engines. The Kia Sorento has been one of our favorite midsize crossover SUVs these past few years.

With available V6 power, plenty of features, and a roomy interior with an available third-row seat, the current-generation Sorento is a great option for shoppers who want something a bit bigger than the typical small crossover. This year's updated 2014 Kia Sorento has all the same draws, but it brings some significant improvements to keep it up to speed with the competition.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

There are four trims: LX, EX, SX, and SX-L. The Sorento LX's standard features list is typical for the class and includes heated mirrors, satellite radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, and an auxiliary jack. The base trim comes with a four-cylinder engine, while all upper trims have a V6. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, a 10-speaker Infinity surround-sound audio system, Kia’s UVO infotainment system, navigation, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, a blind-spot warning system, keyless entry with push-button start, a power liftgate with programmable height, automatic headlights, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Finding a Sorento model with the UVO's easy-to-use and straightforward infotainment system is worth the extra cost. A rearview camera is also a great feature to have since SUVs typically have large rearward blind spots.

Optional on the EX is the Touring package, which adds a power liftgate, a panoramic sunroof, a blind-spot monitoring system, driver memory settings, ventilated front seats, an 8-inch touchscreen display, a navigation system, and a 10-speaker Infinity surround-sound system. The Sorento SX receives the contents of the Touring package and gains 19-inch wheels, selectable steering modes, rear air-conditioning, and a four-way power front passenger seat. The SX-L tops it off with chromed wheels, xenon headlights, a heated and wood-trimmed steering wheel, heated rear seats, and upgraded leather upholstery. Folding 50/50-split third-row seats (with rear air-conditioning) are optional on all Kia Sorentos.

We Recommend

The Sorento is no longer the striking value it once was, but a well-equipped V-6 with front-wheel drive and a rearview camera still stickers well below $30,000. If we have to recommend you one of the four trims, we would recommend you to go with the EX trim as it brings the best value for money proposition in the lineup.

Engine and Performance
7.1/10

The direct-injection four-cylinder is still the base engine on the Sorento. Solid but mild performance has been a hallmark of the Kia Sorento since it was new in 2011, and a pretty stiff ride has been one of its more obvious shortfalls.

This year, the suspension's been redesigned and the powertrains have been revamped, and as a result, the Sorento's ride is more mellow, and it’s V-6 puts nearly 300 horsepower.

The Kia Sorento is the slowest mover among its competitors with staggering figures, which are poles apart from the vehicles in its same class, although Kia has a better top speed record among the three. The Hyundai takes the pole position when it comes to both the quarter-mile and 0-60 times. The 2014 Santa Fe also has a more comfortable ride and better handling. When comparing the power, Honda Pilot stands poles apart from the rivals and wins the crown. The Pilot’s ride is comfortable and it's steering quick.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The Kia Sorento delivers better gas mileage for 2014 than it did in the first half of its life cycle. The front-wheel-drive Sorento is rated at 20 miles per gallon on the EPA's city cycle, 26 miles per gallon highway, and 22 mpg combined when fitted with the four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission. The numbers drop to 18/25 mpg for city/highway and 21 mpg combined in the six-cylinder Sorento with the automatic transmission.

Compared to vehicles like the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Sorento's combined figures are in line, when it's outfitted with the six-cylinder engine. As a four-cylinder five-seater, the Sorento's simply pitted against more efficient and sometimes smaller-displacement offerings. Honda Pilot has some worse numbers when compared to the Sorento and the Santa Fe.

Interior
7.3/10

Plastics dominate the Kia Sorento’s cabin. The base model seats five, and an available third-row raises seating capacity to seven. The front seats are comfortable, and the reclining second-row seats provide good headroom and legroom.

Like those of most SUVs, the Sorento's third-row only has enough space for kids. Cargo space, at 72.5 cubic feet overall, is small for the class.

Front passengers will enjoy a commanding view of the road ahead and enjoy seats that are comfortable and supportive. Adult passengers will likely find plenty of headroom and legroom in the second row, but the optional third-row seats are suitable for children only. Accessing the third row is also a bit tricky. Cargo space is on the generous side, with 36.9 cubic feet available behind the middle row of seats, which is the best on the table. Some interior features are:

  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Steering Wheel Controls
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Adjustable steering wheel column
  • Optional Heated steering wheel

2014 Kia Sorento SUV Infotainment System

The Kia Sorento comes with a decent amount of features for the class. The new, larger touchscreen for 2014 includes a more intuitive menu structure, better graphics, and a secondary control knob that altogether make for one of the most user-friendly tech interfaces on the market.

Augmenting it is the Uvo voice activation system, which is comparable to Ford's praiseworthy Sync system. We found Uvo just as adept at recognizing voice commands for phone and entertainment systems: It allows for truly hands-free operation. Few key features include-

  • Uvo Voice Activation System
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player
  • MP3 Player
  • Satellite Radio
  • Premium Sound System (Optional)
  • Hard Disk Drive
  • Navigation System (Optional)
  • Wireless Cell Phone Hookup

Exterior
8.5/10

The Sorento cuts a more rugged profile than most of the crossovers of its size. The SUV flavor isn't as faint as it is on a Highlander or even a Santa Fe, or as overplayed as it is on the Honda Pilot. It's simply drawn, minimally detailed, and only mildly altered this year, with new front and rear ends and some trim at the sills to give it a little more mass.

The taillamps are LED-lit now, of course, and the grille is either bright like metal or a more intense black mesh on the Sorento SX.

Both the Kia and the Hyundai are having similar characteristics when it comes to the curb weight, length, width, height, or even the wheelbase; only some marginal change of figures differ them on the rank list. However, Honda Pilot outshines the Kia and the Hyundai with clearly dominating figures, making it the biggest and heaviest by a clear margin. Some exterior features include:

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Fog Lamps (optional)
  • Auto-Off Headlights
  • Reverse camera
  • Universal Garage Door Opener (Optional)

Safety
8.9/10

There are no standard active safety features in the 2014 Kia Sorento. Available features include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and a blind-spot warning system. Aside from these features, visibility is good from the driver's seat. The rearmost headrests mostly line up with the Sorento's rear pillars, preserving most of the view to the rear quarters.

The 2014 Kia Sorento's safety score is about average for the class. It receives a perfect overall score of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, it receives four stars in the rollover crash test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2014 Sorento the highest score of Good in all but the small overlap front test, where it scores Poor. Major safety features include-

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Integrated Turn Signal Mirrors
  • Traction Control
  • Blind Spot Monitor (Optional)

Final Verdict

The 2014 Kia Sorento is a good option if you want a basic SUV at a reasonable price. The base engine is adequate, while the available V6 is strong. The cargo space offered by the SUV is decent for its class. Two rows of seats are standard, but a third row is available. Rivals may cost a bit more, but they provide nicer interiors and better performance figures.
