2014 Lexus GX 460 Review

Pros

  • Excellent off-road capabilities
  • Loaded with luxury features

Cons

  • Gas guzzler
  • Uncomfortable second-row seats
  • Inconvenient cargo door

The Lexus GX 460 is one of the most successful luxury SUVs in the Middle East. We understand because it makes sense in countries with low oil prices.

Overview

The Lexus GX 460 is one of the most successful luxury SUVs in the Middle East. We understand because it makes sense in countries with low oil prices. Lexus has been trying to make this SUV a mainstream pick for the Americans for a time now. Lexus offers three rows of seating and excellent capability both on the road and off it. It features body-on-frame construction like traditionalSUVs, a full-time four-wheel-drive setup, and excellent engines under its hood.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2014 Lexus GX 460 is available in two different trims, namely Base, and Luxury. The only engine available is a 4.6L V8 that produces 301 hp and 329 pound-feet of torque. The base variant sees a price reduction and is now available for $49,485. It is itself pretty well equipped with features like 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, sunroof, rear privacy glass, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats with two-way power lumbar cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a rearview camera, and so on.

We Recommend

There is not much to be confused over because Lexus only offers two trim levels. Even then, the base trim is quite a bargain at $49,485 even though that is a big amount for many. Opting for the higher trim level gives you features like leather upholstery, wood trim, and air suspension, which might not exactly be what most people want for the price. For this reason, most buyers would feel happy with the base trim itself, and since there is no powertrain change across the lineup, we feel that the base makes the most amount of sense in the lineup.

Engine and Performance
7.4/10

One will find the same engine offered in both trims of the Lexus GX 460, and that is the 4.6L V8 that produces 301 hp at 5,500 RPM and 329 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 RPM.

The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and the only drivetrain is a full-time four-wheel-drive system that also comes with a low-speed transfer case. This enables the car to be as capable off-road as it is on-road and switches between the two tasks seamlessly. The SUV touches the 60 mph mark in 7.8 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 15.8 seconds.

It is the Audi Q7 and the Land Rover Discovery that have the best performance credentials of the lot. That said, all four SUVs have pretty powerful engines and have good acceleration timings. When you look at the acceleration, the Lexus is the slowest car and by a very clear margin. The Audi, on the other hand, absolutely blazes the track during its acceleration run, running a quarter-mile in just 13.9 seconds.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

Fuel efficiency is a common weak point for cars of this size. The Lexus is no exception because it has a V8, whereas its competitors have six-cylinder engines that are turbocharged as well. The Lexus, with its naturally aspirated V-8, turns 15 MPG in the city, 18 MPG on the highway, and 16 MPG in the combined cycle. It, however, compensates or rather tries to compensate in terms of the range with the help of its rather large fuel tank capacity of 23 gallons, resulting in 345 miles of city range and 414 miles on the highway.

In comparison, the Land Rover and the Lexus fall back in terms of fuel efficiency. The Audi’s engine is a wonder because it produces the most amount of power while returning the best fuel efficiency figures. Hence this engine represents the benchmark in this category for both performance as well as fuel efficiency. The BMW is not far behind and compensates for the small deficit in terms of fuel efficiency against the Audi by providing a much larger fuel tank.

Interior
8.5/10

Lexus maintains a very traditional look in the interiors of the GX 460 compared to most of its other models. However, this suits the car well as the interiors are very attractive and made of very high-quality materials. There is a lot of soft leather and genuine wood trim that make the car truly plush.

There is a long list of features and very comfortable seats. Interior space and cargo area offered are also huge. The SUV comes with a cargo capacity of 11.6 cubic feet behind the third-row seats, which can be enhanced by folding down the second and third-row seats whenever needed.

In comparison, third-row seating is offered only in the Lexus and the Audi Q7. Other cars use this space for cargo, but the fact that the Lexus can double up and do the same establishes its credentials as the most practical car of the class. The BMW X5 has the lowest cargo space at 35.8 ft.³ of storage with its second row of seats folded. Some of the interior features include:

  • Sunroof
  • Rear privacy glass
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Premium upholstery
  • Driver memory settings
  • Sliding and reclining second-row seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror

Infotainment unit

The infotainment unit in the Lexus GX 460 is an 8-inch touchscreen interface. This can be split in to as many as three areas, which is a very useful future.

The audio system comes with a nine-speaker setup that includes the CD player, satellite radio, two USB ports, and an iPod interface. Few standout infotainment features available with the pickup are-

  • Bluetooth
  • USB connection
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • 9-speaker sound system
  • Smartphone connectivity
  • 8-inch touchscreen system with navigation

Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior design of the Lexus GX 460 is a more sophisticated version of the Toyota Land Cruiser. It has a utilitarian vibe to it, and it remains ornamental and beautiful.

The design has proportions of a traditional SUV, one that is a rugged and faithful companion for all adventures. It is quite heavy at 5,130 pounds, but it is a surprise that the car is not the longest despite offering three rows of seating and a lot of cargo space.

The Lexus GX 460 is the heaviest vehicle when compared to all other cars in its class at 5,130 pounds, whereas the BMW X5 stands lightest with a curb weight of 4,680 lbs. As we mentioned, it is dimensionally inferior in every aspect except height when you compare it with the competitors. Although it is highly unlikely, the car is the most capable one if you take it off-road. Some standout exterior features include:

  • Quad tip exhaust
  • All-terrain tires
  • 18-inch rims
  • Body-colored bumpers
  • Front license plate bracket

Safety
8.0/10

The Lexus GX 460 has not undergone the NHTSA or the IIHS crash tests, hence a comprehensive report is not possible. Standard safety features on the 2014 Lexus GX 460 include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear airbags, side curtain airbags that cover all three rows, Lexus Safety Connect Emergency Communications with automatic collision notification, optional front, and rear parking sensors, and so on. Some standout safety features include-

  • Lexus safety connect emergency communication
  • Automatic collision notification
  • Stolen vehicle locator
  • Emergency assist
  • Optional blind-spot monitoring
  • Optional rear cross-traffic alert
  • Optional front tell collision warning and preparation system
  • Optional Lane departure warning
  • Full-length side curtain airbags
  • Traction control

Final Verdict

The 2014 Lexus GX 460 is an SUV that is both refined and rugged in equal measure. It has excellent luxury equipment from Lexus and one of the most rugged Toyota chassis together in a combination that is just hard to beat. It offers seating for seven passengers, the choicest of features and materials inside, plush design on the outside, and a lot more. All in all, the Lexus GX 460 is a decent option in the segment.
