About 2014 Nissan Juke

3.6

Overall Rating

The moment we hear the brand name Nissan, it brings back a lot of memories related to the Skyline GT-R and the modern GT-R, both of which are excellent performance machines even to this day.

The moment we hear the brand name Nissan, it brings back a lot of memories related to the Skyline GT-R and the modern GT-R, both of which are excellent performance machines even to this day. Nissan also loves to experiment with some unconventional vehicles such as the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet and the Nissan Juke.

If you’re conscious about your budget then we would suggest the SV trim. The SL trim makes the most value for money option since the price remains within the affordable bracket.

  • Nimble handling
  • Excellent good fuel economy

Cons

  • Cramped back seat
  • Small cargo area

Overview

The moment we hear the brand name Nissan, it brings back a lot of memories related to the Skyline GT-R and the modern GT-R, both of which are excellent performance machines even to this day. Nissan also loves to experiment with some unconventional vehicles such as the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet and the Nissan Juke.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Nissan Juke is offered in three trim levels align with a standard turbocharged 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine and two transmission options with an FWD and an AWD layout as well. The price for the base S trim is set at $19,170 for the FWD layout and offers a decent set of features such as air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, 60/40-split-folding rear seats, keyless entry, full power accessories, cruise control, a tilt-only steering wheel, a trip computer, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system. Stepping up to the SV trim increases the price slightly to $20,990 but offers a handsome set of features that include a sunroof, rear privacy glass, keyless entry/ignition, automatic climate control, upgraded upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and satellite radio. The top-end SL trim adds only a handful of features which are automatic headlights, foglights, leather upholstery, and heated front seats.

If you’re conscious about your budget then we would suggest the SV trim. The SL trim makes the most value for money option since the price remains within the affordable bracket.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The Nissan Juke is powered by a standard 1.6L MR16DDT I-4 turbo motor that can generate a maximum of 188 horsepower and 177lb-ft of torque. The motor power plant is on the noisier side to induce a sporty vibe but behaved differently while driving. The acceleration is rather sluggish for a compact car and the driver-configurable I-CON system tweaks the steering and transmission response that actually increases the response from the motor and makes it a bit quicker but compromises the fuel economy to some extent. The CVT transmission is decent at the most and comes with some of the notorious traits of a traditional CVT transmission. The 0-60mph dash takes about 7.3 seconds to complete by the car in the sportiest setting.

The Kia Soul is a rather dull performer as compared to the Juke and has meager horsepower and torque output figures. The Mazda Mazda3 is a decent performer by pushing out pretty solid numbers from a naturally aspirated motor.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Nissan Juke delivers some excellent mileage figures owing to its compact footprint. The city mileage of the Juke is rated at 27mpg while the highway mileage is rated at 32mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 29mpg.

The Kia Soul disappoints with its sub-par fuel economy despite being the weakest performer in the segment. The Mazda3 has some impressive mileage figures with over 40mpg of highway mileage.

Interior
6.6/10

The interior of the Nissan Juke is given an aggressive styling like its exterior and it looks quite appealing for a budget hatchback. There are tasteful silver accents throughout the cabin, giving a cheerful vibe but the abundance of hard plastics would necessarily remind you of the budget price tag of the vehicle. The front seats are comfortable with adequate bolstering to aid dynamic driving sessions and offer a decent amount of headroom and legroom. The rear seats are quite short on headroom, making it friendly for kids and storing luggage only. The trunk space is quite restricted at a mere 10 cu-ft and can be increased to 36 cu-ft with the rear seatbacks folded.

The Kia Soul has a more ordinary and bland interior design as compared to the Juke but has a spacious and practical rear seat along with a generous cargo storage capacity. The Mazda3 has an overall compact cabin with a lower headroom for both the front and rear passengers as compared to both the Juke and the Soul.

Infotainment

The infotainment system of the Nissan Juke is basic but adequate considering the price tag of the car. The basic features include Bluetooth phone connectivity, a six-speaker sound system, a CD player, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The SV trim offers satellite radio and the optional Navigation Package further adds a touchscreen navigation system, a rearview camera, traffic info, an upgraded Rockford Fosgate audio system with a subwoofer, and a USB/iPod interface.

Infotainment features of the Juke are:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player
  • MP3 Player
  • Navigation(optional)
  • USB/iPod interface

Exterior
5.0/10

The Nissan Juke looks quite compact from the outside like it is on the inside but it does have a polarizing design language that appeals to many and is an eyesore to a lot of folks as well. The exterior styling looks like a concept vehicle, giving a futuristic appeal to it and its front-end design is quite weird, looking like nothing in the automobile industry right now. There are ample curves, angles, swells, and bulges on the outside along with the pillar-mounted rear-door handles. The rear.end has a resemblance to the 370z coupe with almost similar looking tail lights but looks appealing nonetheless.

The Kia Soul has a boxy exterior design with a grumpy-looking front fascia and a tall-boy style rear end. The Mazda3 has a more sophisticated look than both the Nissan Juke and the Kia Soul with a low roofline and an aggressive front fascia.

Safety
7.9/10

The Nissan Juke bagged a 4-star out of 5 rating from the NHTSA and a best possible “Good” rating from the IIHS as well. The standard safety features of the Juke include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, active front head restraints, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags along with an optional rear view camera.

Safety features:

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control
  • Rear view camera(optional)

Final Verdict

The Nissan Juke truly stands out among the crowded affordable-hatchback segment with its unconventional design and sporty appeal. The performance might not appeal to the enthusiasts, for which there is a special NISMO trim, but the overall driveability of the car is decent and has agile handling as well. The practicality inside the cabin is on the lower side with a small trunk space and impractical rear seats.
