2014 Nissan Xterra Review

Pros

  • Strong and refined power delivery
  • Off-road expertise
  • Well laid out interior

Cons

  • Below average fuel efficiency
  • The styling is a bit quirky
  • Jerky ride

The Xterra is Nissan’s attempt at cracking the mid-size SUV market courtesy of the Xterra. It is large, sensible, and practical.

Overview

The Xterra is Nissan’s attempt at cracking the mid-size SUV market courtesy of the Xterra. It is large, sensible, and practical. If you look at the global market, one thing is clear, SUVs of all shapes and sizes are the hottest products around. Customers just can’t seem to get enough of them. The Xterra, meanwhile, has a design that’s very much in line with Nissan’s global design language and it also has go-anywhere capabilities.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The Nissan Xterra comes with three different trim levels and the features it offers are the only differentiating factor from one another. It falls in a price bandwidth that extends from $23,390 for its base variant to $30,320 for its top-of-the-line trim. As standard, it includes features like power windows, remote keyless entry, and Cruise control with steering wheel controls.

We recommend:

We recommend the mid variant S for its price to features ratio. You can almost get all the features that come in the top of its line PRO-4X trim for a pretty fair deal except the navigation system. If you are someone who travels to a lot of places and spends your weekend camping in unknown places, you should go for PRO-4X trim for its additional features.

Engine and Performance
7.4/10

Moving on to the bits that matter the most, underneath the hood is a 4.0-liter V6 engine is not the type that’ll wake up the neighborhood with a resounding growl. Instead, it fires up in a very calm and collected manner which churns out 261 horsepower, and the torque peaks at a relatively modest 281 lb-Ft. of torque mated to a five-speed automatic transmission which gives a smooth and linear powerband.

All of the 281 lb-ft of torque comes in a very low rpm, which means it’s never found wanting to grunt, even when you’re attempting to pull away from slow-moving traffic. This car goes from 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds which is not so quick when compared to its rivals, but it lags only a tad behind its rivals. All the trims come with a front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive but the Xterra comes alive only with the All-wheel drive trim.

In comparison, All three cars come with a similar V6 engine layout and are channeled as both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive. Both Nissan Xterra and Toyota FJ Cruiser incorporate a 5 speed automatic, while the Jeep Wrangler goes old school with a 5-speed manual transmission setup which cranks out 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

When it comes to acceleration, the Jeep Wrangler smokes both its rivals by a considerable margin with a 0-60 mph time of 7.1 seconds and also in the quarter-mile test of a whopping 13.6 seconds while the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Nissan Xterra manage to do a 14.2 and 14.1 seconds quarter-mile run respectively.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

There are no complaints about the Nissan Xterra when speaking of fuel economy as it consumes a fair amount of fuel. It averages a mileage of 15 mpg in the city and20 mpg on the highway combined, it is capable of averaging 17 miles per gallon of fuel. However, its fuel tank of 21.1 gallons finds second place in the table after both the cars. The Nissan Xterra covers a range of 316 miles when cruising in the city and 422 miles on the highways.

In comparison, Both Jeep Wrangler and Toyota FJ Cruiser find their position on the top of the table with 18 mpg combined. The FJ Cruiser also performs pretty decently for its tank size. Next in line is the Jeep wrangler but with its enormous tank size, it is capable of covering 360 miles in the city and 472.2 miles in on the highway which is the segment-leading. The Xterra, with its mediocre fuel efficiency, stays in the last place on the table.

Interior
6.7/10

The Nissan Xterra isn’t necessarily made for comfort instead it is built to do off-roading but it offers you the comfort you’d expect from a serious off-road vehicle. The cabin of the Xterra feels neatly laid out but there are some plastic bits but that’s acceptable. The Xterra has a total seating capacity of five passengers and there is ample room for 4 adults.

The seats are more comfy and upscale in their standards when compared to the previous yearThe upholstery options are well-to-do, however, the rear seats do feel cramped and are best suited for two passengers only. Even in terms of second-row space, the Nissan Xterra stands to lose but still offers an extensive list of convenient features.

In comparison, Both Jeep wrangler and FJ Cruiser have similar front row space and second-row space with very minute differences. The cargo capacity on offer is the highest in the Nissan Xterra so that you can take more luggage for the weekend. It offers a cargo capacity of 36.3. While the FJ Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler offer 27.9 and 31.5. As a result, the Xterra wins the competition when it comes to cargo capacity.

How intuitive is the 2014 Nissan Xterra’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system on this new Nissan SUV features a 1st-row display screen, which is controlled by a touch that sits perfectly on the central console and is connected with the Nissan Connect interface. As standard, it comes equipped with modern features like Bluetooth connectivity, Nissan connects internet access, and wireless phone connectivity. With the optional packages, it gets a Rockford Fosgate amplifier and Smart device integration, which gets connected to the display screen and a premium sound system. Some other infotainment features include:

  • 9-speaker sound system
  • Radio Data System
  • CD Player
  • Speed sensitive volume
  • MP3 Player

Exterior
7.0/10

With its Outlandish design, this car may not grab many people’s attention when compared to its opponents but it has the traditional Nissan Pick-up trucks derived styling that attracts the people who are more into pickup trucks, off-road adventures, and camping stuff. The side fenders have been bulged to give it a bulky look and an imposing stance.

The box headlamps and tail lamps are a unification of minimalistic looks and subtleness, while the roofline adds a tad of quirkiness. The front grille is the signature styling of the Nissan pickup trucks. The Xterra is a pick-up truck disguised as an SUV. It is the heaviest among the lot with a curb weight of 4425 lbs and it occurs to be the smallest among its opponents with a length of 178.7 inches.

In comparison, the Jeep wrangler is considerably the longest car with a length of 178.7 inches and the lightest with just 4075 lbs. Moreover, it has the highest ground clearance of 10.2 inches which in turn adds up to climb any place at ease capabilities. The jeep also maintains its winning streak with a long wheelbase of 116 inches. While the FJ Cruiser and Xterra are a bit lower comparatively.

Safety
9.2/10

The new Nissan Xterra comes with an extensive list of features and has got mixed ratings from IIHS and it gets a good score in front and side-impact tests but it gets a mediocre rating for roof strength and rear impact safety. However, the NHTSA hasn’t tested it yet. It is equipped with wheel antilock brakes. Some standout safety features include

  • Front and rear ventilated disc brakes
  • Dual impact front airbags
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Electronic stability control
  • Hill descent control
  • Traction control

Final Verdict

The Nissan Xterra is filled to the brim with potential. While it may not be a class topper with categorized excellence, Nissan Xterra’s strength lies in delivering seemingly well off-roading performance and fuel economy in the segment. While its engine may not be the most powerful, it does not lag considerably behind its contenders. The nicely built cabin is one of the enticing aspects and its cabin is a likable place to be in. Its mediocre safety scores do justice to its price and with a design so peculiar, we would place Nissan Xterra on our list when it comes to buying an SUV.
