Overall Rating
The new Toyota Land Cruiser costs a pretty penny, but it's also a legendary vehicle with undeniable appeal.
The new 2014 Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the highest-ranked vehicles in its class. Not only does it have powerful acceleration and a handsome interior, but it is capable both on- and off-road. The new Toyota Land Cruiser costs a pretty penny, but it's also a legendary vehicle with undeniable appeal.
No other three-row SUV can match its combination of luxury and off-road performance. After some research, finally, when you happen to find a few SUVs that can match the Cruiser's combined on- and off-road prowess, its lofty price tag starts to make more sense. And for alternatives, actually, you'll have to look at luxury SUVs.
As there is only one fully loaded option available, there is nothing else to choose from. The standard features offered are more than one could ask for on a base model. The price tag is being justified with the amenities the car comes with, not to mention the explosive power it generates and impressive riding comfort.

The 2014 Toyota Land Cruiser is an eight-passenger SUV available in a single, fully loaded trim level. There are no optional features, in this case, that’s not a bad thing; this luxury large SUV of Toyota includes standard features like 18-inch wheels, automatic xenon headlamps with LED running lights, fog lights, auto-dimming, and power-folding heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, automatic wipers, privacy glass, a roof rack, a rear spoiler, running boards, a sunroof, and keyless ignition/entry.

Even by the standards of its class, the Land Cruiser's price tag is large, and its thirst for fuel is gargantuan. Over the years, the renowned Land Cruiser model name has morphed from a tough but basic Jeep-like vehicle to a huge, luxurious vehicle that competes with the high end of the German and English utility brands, hanging onto its off-roading abilities despite its many premium features. A past filled with desert treks, mountain climbing, and safaris has given way to a more refined exploration of high-end shopping malls and affluent suburbs.

There's only one available drivetrain in the Land Cruiser, and it's a brawny, rugged one intended for off-road use. It's not our first choice of vehicles if you're just looking for a family hauler, but the Land Cruiser rides comfortably with reasonable power. The Land Cruiser is powered by a 5.7-liter V-8 that produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque.
That engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel-drive system. It's just shy of 6,000 pounds, thanks largely to its very heavy body-on-frame construction. That structure also gives it some substantial towing ability, even though it sounds and feels pretty smooth on the highway. The Land Cruiser isn't quick, though, you just can't bend the laws of physics.

The Land Cruiser and its corporate cousin, the Lexus LX, have many similarities. To start, both SUVs are made to excel off-road as well as on the highway. They also both have powerful V8 engines and refined interiors (more so in the LX). Jeep is a truly capable off-road vehicle that maintains composure on the pavement. Its low-reliability rating could run up maintenance costs, but keep in mind that it costs less than half the price of the Land Cruiser. Nonetheless, the Land Cruiser is the better SUV overall.
The 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser has a nearly 450-mile range, but that’s because its fuel tank holds almost 25 gallons of regular unleaded. The Land Cruiser is not a fuel-efficient vehicle. With its weight and engine size working against it, Toyota doesn't even try to pretend that the Land Cruiser is fuel-efficient.

The EPA rates it at 13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, so it's not even remotely green. It is better than its Lexus LX twin, though, which is rated at 1 mpg lower across the board. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the Land Cruiser will cost about the same to drive as the Land Rover Range Rover because the Toyota is rated to run on regular unleaded gasoline.
The Land Cruiser might not have a traditional luxury badge like many of its competitors, but its interior is a prime example of refinement. There’s seating for eight on supple leather, and wood accents can be found throughout the cabin.
The first- and second-row seats have sufficient space, which makes for a comfortable commute. The cramped third-row seats, on the other hand, aren’t suitable for adults.

A high seating position creates good driving visibility. In terms of cargo space, the Land Cruiser is smaller than class rivals like the long-wheelbase Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, the split-folding third-row seats fold to both sides of the vehicle for additional cargo room, as opposed to folding into the floor. This increases cargo capacity but hinders corner visibility. There are two sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the outboard second-row seats and an upper tether on the middle seat.Â
The standard navigation system has easy-to-use controls, and the heated tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel has redundant buttons for the audio system.
All models include push-button start, a moonroof, four-zone climate control, a USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio, an 8-inch touch screen, a 14-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and a rear-seat entertainment system.
The 2014 Toyota Land Cruiser wears traditional SUV styling with Toyota's big, modern design language across its front end. It's instantly recognizable for its size, though the current Land Cruiser also has a few of the most current industry trends going for it, like LED running lights and its bigger, bolder grille.
While it might not look truly luxurious like the Land Rover line up or its near-twin, the Lexus LX, the Land Cruiser has the look of a confident off-roader, with big, handsome lines.

The Cruiser has come a long way indeed from its origins as a two-door off-roader, adding layers of luxury through the years that have progressively obscured those rough-and-tumble roots. To be clear, the 2014 Land Cruiser remains a seriously capable vehicle, boasting a beefy 8,500-pound tow capacity and a bevy of advanced features like power-disconnecting stabilizer bars, selectable terrain settings, and crawl control that can practically conquer tough terrain by themselves. But more than any Cruiser before it, this one was designed with suburban pavement in mind. It is, for better or worse, the most domesticated Land Cruiser yet.
While there's plenty of window space in the new Toyota Land Cruiser, visibility can be challenging in up-close parking situations because of its height next to other vehicles (not to mention kids and strollers and the like). Parking sensors are standard, and a rearview camera is included with the newly standard navigation system. Among its standard safety features are some that were options just last year.
They include ten airbags, among them second-row side airbags and front knee airbags, along with active headrests, stability control, tire pressure monitors, and anti-lock braking tuned for a variety of on- and off-road surfaces. No crash tests were performed on the 2014 Toyota Land Cruiser, which is common among luxury vehicles. Standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and a pre-collision system with brake assist.
The 2014 Land Cruiser is great for those who desire off-road prowess and on-road comfort in the same vehicle. This luxury large SUV has great passing power from its muscular V8 engine, along with a refined cabin and a strong reliability rating. So, is a 2014 Land Cruiser the right one for you? The answer's going to lie with what your priorities are for a three-row SUV. But the Land Cruiser legend lives on in the current model's do-it-all character, and that alone will make it worth the stretch for some.
