Overall Rating
The Lexus GX 460 is built on the most traditional SUV formulas and still remains a successful and reliable choice for buyers in the segment.
The Lexus GX 460 is built on the most traditional SUV formulas and still remains a successful and reliable choice for buyers in the segment. Lexus offers three rows of seating and is capable on the road and off it. It features body-on-frame construction like traditional SUVs, a full-time four-wheel-drive setup, and an excellent and torquey V-8 engine under its hood.
There is not much to be confused over because Lexus only offers three trim levels. Even then, the base trim is quite a bargain at $49,485 even though that is a big amount for many. Opting for higher trim levels gives you features like leather upholstery, wood trim, and air suspension, which might not exactly be what most people want. For this reason, most buyers would feel happy with the base trim itself, and since there is no powertrain change across the lineup, we feel that the base makes the most amount of sense.

The 2015 Lexus GX 460 is available in three different trims, namely Base, Premium, and Luxury. All the variants are equipped with the same engine- a 4.6L V8 that produces 301 hp and 329 pound-feet of torque. The base variant is available for $49,485. It is itself pretty well equipped with features like 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, sunroof, rear privacy glass, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats with two-way power lumbar cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a rearview camera, and so on.

There is only one engine offered with the Lexus GX 460, and that is the 4.6L V8 that produces 301 hp at 5,500 RPM and 329 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 RPM. This is a very powerful engine and is enough to lead the driver to exercise their wild side every once in a while.
This engine is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system that also comes with a low-speed transfer case. This enables the car to be as capable off-road as it is on-road and switches between the two tasks seamlessly.

All the SUVs are powered by six or eight-cylinder engines that provide very decent performance. However, it is the Audi Q7 and the Land Rover Discovery that have the best performance credentials of the lot. When you look at the acceleration, the Lexus is the slowest car and by a very clear margin. The Audi, on the other hand, absolutely blazes the track during its acceleration run, running a quarter-mile in just 13.9 seconds.
Traditionally, V8-engined SUVs are not even considered for fuel-efficiency tests because they are bound to get very bad scores. The Lexus has the V8, whereas its competitors have six-cylinder engines that can be tuned for efficiency because they are turbocharged as well. The Lexus, with its naturally aspirated V-8, turns 15 MPG in the city, 18 MPG on the highway, and 16 MPG in the combined cycle. It however compensates in terms of the range due to its rather large fuel tank capacity of 23 gallons, resulting in 345 miles of city range and 414 miles on the highway.

In comparison, the Land Rover and the Lexus fall back in terms of fuel efficiency. The Audi’s engine is a wonder because it produces the most amount of power while returning the best fuel efficiency figures. It still strikes the best compromise of the lot because the rivals have lesser performance and lesser fuel efficiency as well. The BMW is not far behind and compensates for the small deficit in terms of fuel efficiency against the Audi by providing a much larger fuel tank.
The cabin of the Lexus has surfaces that are designed in very traditional standards. However, even back then, it was designed so well that it still holds up to the standards of today.
The material quality can be observed to be noticeably great, especially in higher trims where you get genuine wood inserts. The soft leather of the luxury trim is also noticeably excellent. There is a slight shortage of storage space but interior space itself is plenty.

In comparison, third-row seating is a big boon that is offered only in the Lexus and the Audi Q7. Others use this space for cargo, but the fact that the Lexus can double up and do the same establishes its credentials as the most practical car of the class. The Audi Q7 has the lowest cargo space at 37.5 3 ft.³ of storage with its third row of seats folded. Some of the interior features include:
The infotainment unit in the Lexus GX 460 is an 8-inch touchscreen interface that comes with a nine-speaker sound system that includes the CD player, Siri eyes-free, satellite radio, two USB ports, and an iPod interface.

The exterior design of the Lexus GX 460 is very much similar to the one you find in the Toyota Land Cruiser. It comes as no surprise then that these both are the same cars, just in two different levels of luxury.
The design has proportions of a traditional SUV, one that is a rugged and faithful companion for all adventures. It is also a body-on-frame construction and proves to be very reliable in the long run as well.
