2015 Toyota Camry Review

Pros

  • Quiet and stylish cabin
  • Easy-to-use infotainment system
  • Great reliability rating

Cons

  • Below-average fuel economy
  • Less engaging to drive than rivals

The Toyota Camry has been around since 1982 and has helped Toyota to become a household name worldwide to some extent.

Overview

The refreshed 2015 Toyota Camry gets even better, with a host of new features, updated styling and retuned suspension. This well-rounded affordable car gains more standard tech and features including a wireless charging system, a new 4.2-inch TFT screen, a new HDD navigation system with a seven-inch touchscreen and a new JBL audio system. Toyota has also added the sporty XSE trim to the gas-powered Camry's lineup. You can opt for the Hybrids as well, now available in the SE trim.

The 2015 Camry's refreshed exterior styling looks less conservative than the predecessors. The sedan is rated above most rivals for its good interior, excellent reliability and decent overall performance. In the class, Toyota Camry competes with rivals including Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The Toyota Camry is offered in six trim levels along with two powertrain options and a single transmission option. The powertrain options include a base 2.5liter four-pot motor and a bigger and more powerful V6 motor that is offered with the XLE and the XSE trims. The trim levels kick-off with the base LE trim which is priced at $22,970 and offers a generous list of features at a really attractive price. Stepping up to the SE trim will give you a sport-tuned suspension setup and bigger wheels along with a sporty interior trim as well to give a sporty feeling at an affordable price tag. The range-topping XSE trim is priced at $26,150 with the standard engine and $31,370 if you opt for the V6. This trim brings on a lot of features such as an acoustic windscreen, LED headlights, 7-inch upgraded Entune touchscreen interface and a Qi wireless phone charging option.

We Recommend

We would suggest you the base LE trim if you’re on a tight budget. Else, the XSE trim makes the most value-for-money option with a wide range of features on offer.

Engine and Performance
7.6/10

The base engine of the Toyota Camry sedan is a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter twin-cam four-cylinder engine, tuned to crank out a maximum of 178 horsepower and 170lb-ft of torque. The engine employs Dual VVT-i variable valve timing to maximize performance while retaining a good mileage as well. For most parts, the motor is just fine and extremely refined, delivering all its power in a linear manner via the FWD layout.

The motor might feel a bit strained while making a quick pass or going up an elevation but the 6-speed automatic transmission reacts quickly and drops a couple of gears to smooth things out. The 0-60mph dash takes 8.2 seconds, which is about decent for the segment with similarly powered rivals.

The Kia Forte has a slightly lower horsepower and significantly lower torque output than the Camry making it a bit more sluggish off the line. The Hyundai Elantra shares the same powertrain with the Forte hence its power and performance figures are identical to the latter.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

The Toyota Camry returns commendable mileage figures as per the segment standards. The city mileage of the sedan is rated at an impressive 25mpg while the highway mileage is an equally impressive 35mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 28mpg.

The Kia Forte has similar city mileage to the Camry and a slightly better highway and combined mileage than the latter. The Hyundai Elantra, despite sharing its powertrain with the Kia Forte, has marginally lower overall mileage ratings than the latter as well as the Camry.

Interior
7.8/10

Toyota has blessed the Camry with a plush and comfortable interior, which is one of the best among the segment. The cabin is laid out with high-quality materials throughout and the fit and finish levels deserve some attention. There is ample headroom and legroom for even tall passengers at both the front and the back.

The front seats are quite comfortable with adequate bolstering and soft cushioning but the firm suspension tuning on the SE trim might make the ride unsettling at low speeds. In general, the ride quality is on the plusher side. Cargo capacity is decent at 15.4 cu-ft and can hold luggage for four passengers easily.

The Kia Forte has a well-appointed interior but lacks the premium and plush feeling of the Camry along with compact rear seats.. The hyundai Elantra shares its interior dimensions with the Forte but has a slightly better headroom for the front driver and passenger.

Interior features:

  • Keyless entry
  • Power adjustable driver’s seat
  • Remote trunk release
  • Steering wheel controls
  • Adjustable Steering Wheel

Infotainment

The Camry sedan comes with a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen display with Toyota’s Entune electronic interface along with a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, and a USB/iPod interface.

The higher trims replaces the 6.1-inch touchscreen with a 7-inch unit and further adds a navigation system, Qi wireless smartphone charging, and smartphone-integration app suite.

Infotainment system features of the sedan are:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player
  • HD Radio (Optional)
  • MP3 Player
  • Satellite Radio (Optional)
  • Smart Device Integration (Optional)

Exterior
8.0/10

The Toyota Camry is no head-turner in the segment but boasts a handsome and detailed exterior styling as opposed to most of its rivals. The new swept-back headlight units with clear lenses flank the new front grille nicely, giving an overall wide look to the front fascia.

The side profile looks more aerodynamically efficient with a smoother sheet metal design and the rear-end looks attractive with new tail light units.

The Kia Forte misses the smooth flowing appeal of the Camry but has a distinctive appeal of its own especially with the front grille design. The Hyundai Elantra comes with the brand’s new fluidic design language and has a nice appeal to it.

Safety
9.3/10

The Camry comes with excellent safety scores as ios expected from a Toyota vehicle. The sedan has been rated a full 5-stars by the NHTSA and the IIHS gave their best possible “Good” rating to it. The standard safety systems of the sedan include anti lock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, front knee airbags and a rearview camera.

Safety features of the sedan are:

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control

Final Verdict

The 2015 Toyota Camry arrives with a new and updated design along with some tasteful interior features to offer a sweet deal at a really competitive price. The sedan also offers a strong performance with its optional V6 motor to please the enthusiasts out there. Overall, it is a handsome and practical mid-size sedan ticking all the boxes to become an ideal daily driver.
