About 2015 Toyota Sequoia

3.7

Overall Rating

The Sequoia has not been refreshed in a while and lacks modern techs and some of the safety features.

The Sequoia is based on the Tundra pickup truck. A traditional three-row full-size SUV that can do it all. The Sequoia has not been refreshed in a while and lacks modern techs and some of the safety features. But Toyota’s reliability along with the capabilities that Sequoia offers is still unbeatable. Just like its pickup sibling, the Tundra, it has a great towing capacity, cargo capacity, and is a highly capable off-roader. Pricing for the Sequoia will begin at $44,495 for 2015.

Recommending a specific trim for Sequoia is quite a daunting task as there is a lot that’s different with every subsequent trim on offer. However, to sound rational, purchasing the base SR5 version along with the Premium package houses most of the practical as well as leisure appointments to your Sequoia. Meanwhile, the infotainment and safety may still remain unaddressed.

2015 Toyota Sequoia Review

Pros

  • Effortless V-8 power
  • Tows like a champ
  • Rides comfortably

Cons

  • Poor fuel economy
  • Improper Ergonomics
  • Maneuverability is challenging

The Sequoia has not been refreshed in a while and lacks modern techs and some of the safety features.

Overview

The Sequoia is based on the Tundra pickup truck. A traditional three-row full-size SUV that can do it all. The Sequoia has not been refreshed in a while and lacks modern techs and some of the safety features. But Toyota’s reliability along with the capabilities that Sequoia offers is still unbeatable. Just like its pickup sibling, the Tundra, it has a great towing capacity, cargo capacity, and is a highly capable off-roader. Pricing for the Sequoia will begin at $44,495 for 2015.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2015 Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV with standard eight-passenger seating. Optional second-row captain's chairs reduce seating capacity to seven. The Sequoia is offered in three trim levels: SR5, Limited, and Platinum. The base trim level SR5 model comes with lots of standard features, including 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a windshield wiper de-icer, heated mirrors, a sunroof, keyless entry, a roof rack, running boards, rear privacy glass, a power-lowering rear window and towing preparation.

Stepping up to the Limited model gets you 20-inch alloy wheels, power-folding and auto-dimming outside mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, and a power liftgate. The top-of-the-line Platinum trim level comes standard with all of the above features, plus different 20-inch wheels, an adaptive air suspension (with a load-leveling rear), a blind spot monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, heated and ventilated front seats, etc.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

There's only one engine available in the 2015 Toyota Sequoia, a 5.7-liter V-8 that produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, which works well for shoppers who have towing in mind. That V-8 rumbles to life with some serious engine sounds, and nearly all of its torque–90 percent, in fact–is delivered at 2,200 rpm. That assists with the Sequoia's towing ability, especially in Tow/Haul mode, where it can pull up to 7,400 pounds.

The Sequoia shares its underpinnings with the Tundra pickup truck, but it rides and handles somewhat better. A four-wheel independent suspension helps keep the Sequoia stable through corners for the most part, although rough patches like pavement patches or gravel-road washboards, can upset its composure.

Comparing Sequoia's rivals is like matching the Titans. Each one is just as powerful and gigantic as the other. Fortunately, our host wins the battle of vigor stating the highest figures for power between the Nissan Armada and the GMC Yukon. However, putting them to race against each other proved that the Yukon is faster and better on the tracks. It even beats the Toyota in top speed. On the other hand, the Armada drives hand-in-hand with Toyota at each step other than power.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The tradeoff for so much muscle under the hood is a poor fuel economy rating. The Sequoia gets an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and 17-18 mpg on the highway. Besides, this is by no means a maneuverable, city-friendly vehicle, but among large SUVs its 38-foot turning circle is commendable. Although, the ride characteristics are quite effortless with respect to the transmission, which is smooth and spontaneous. Despite that, the SUV exhibits an enormous thirst for fuel. Well, on one side, it is a cause for concern, but on the other, it should be understandable since the Sequoia is based on the Tundra pickup.

As expected, Toyota falls to the knees before its competition. The surprising fact is that the GMC Yukon, which is also based on a pickup, offers the best economy figures of 19 MPG (combined) in the segment. It is followed by a commendable 16 MPG of the Nissan Armada. However, given the absence of power, the Armada was expected to do better. Besides, it also has the biggest fuel tank.

Interior
7.5/10

The Toyota Sequoia seats up to eight people across three rows. The top two models have second-row captain's chairs that reduce seating to seven. The front seats offer plenty of comfort and support, though taller people may want more headroom. Meanwhile, the second row can slide and recline, and the third row remains roomy enough for adult passengers.

The cabin materials are nice enough, but the Sequoia's interior can't match the ritzier appearance of some class competitors. Cloth upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat are standard. Available features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 10- or 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat, ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain's chairs, rear-window sunshades, and a power-reclining third row.

Turns out Toyota has designed the Sequoia quite extravagantly. It has the widest cabin among its competitors. On the other hand, the headroom and legroom share a lot of disadvantages in terms of space occupancy. Though the first row occupants may not face a lot of challenges, there is a very good chance that the ones in the rear row will be in a heap of discomfort on longer rides. Few key interior features include-

  • Audio And Cruise Controls On Steering Wheel
  • Leather Steering Wheel
  • Three Zone Climate Control
  • Power Steering
  • Adaptive Cruise Control

Exterior
7.0/10

It doesn't take much to realize that the 2015 Toyota Sequoia is a big, brawny, truck-based SUV. It's larger than virtually anything else on the road today, unless you're looking at the crisply styled new GMC Yukon. In all its majestic glory, the Sequoia for 2015 is the longest, widest and tallest full-size SUV Toyota builds, and with its long wheelbase, it appears even longer.

The long wheelbase pays dividends, it enhances the interior room, improves ride quality, contributes to directional stability, and with the resultant short overhangs, gives extra clearance when approaching steep angles. Sequoia's appearance is fairly innocuous and can’t be accused of standing out in a crowd, but it’s clean, functional, and certainly not unattractive.

Virtually, the Sequoia is lighter than the Nissan Armada, while the Yukon remains the lightest. Well, the Armada is also quite substantial in itself, and thus, can be expected to weigh more. In fact, it is bigger than the Sequoia in every respect. It is only when the Yukon weighs in with its extraordinary width that the Armada feels small. Few key features include-

Safety
7.5/10

Most large SUVs do not undergo crash testing, and those that do are often sparingly evaluated. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2015 Sequoia four out of five stars in the rollover test. Nevertheless, the Sequoia comes standard with a rearview camera and some basic defensive mechanisms like ABS, stability control, EBD, traction control, etc. Available driver assistance features include front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. To summarize the list:

  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Dual Front Side-Mounted Airbags
  • Stability Control
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Sensing Deactivation
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Front And Rear Ventilated Disc Brakes

  • Traction Control

Final Verdict

The Sequoia may feel outdated in 2015 but it still offers the important features that a vehicle like this should have like remarkable off-road capabilities, ample cargo space, and towing capacity, and above all a big V-8 engine that will satisfy every gearhead needs. The 2015 Toyota Sequoia lacks some modern features, but keeps in mind, it was never meant to be a comfortable luxury SUV. Instead, it offers utility and reliability with its bulletproof V-8, high ground clearance, and impressive cargo and towing capacity, which makes it capable of going cross-country.
