Pros

  • Good fuel economy
  • Roomy interior
  • User-friendly Interface
  • High-reliability rating

Cons

Subcompact cars are gaining a lot of attention in the car market nowadays. These cars are entry-level easy to drive cars, friendly on the pocket, and decent for starting in the car world.

Overview

Subcompact cars are gaining a lot of attention in the car market nowadays. These cars are entry-level easy to drive cars, friendly on the pocket, and decent for starting in the car world. There are a ton of options today in this segment. The Toyota Yaris 2015 is what you would expect Toyota to do, but the entry of this car is lost in the market, thanks to all the competition.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

There are 3 main trims available, namely L, LE, and SE, along with 1 engine option only. The price starts from $14,845 and goes all the way up to $17,620 for the top-of-the-line trim. Standard features on all the trims include 15” steel wheels, power windows, air-conditioning, height-adjustable driver seat, a trip computer, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, Bluetooth phone & audio connectivity, a CD player, HD radio, a 6-speaker sound system, 6.1-inch touchscreen, an auxiliary audio jack, and a USB/iPod interface.

The Yaris is available across the L and LE trims as a 3-door or a 5-door. The SE however, is only available as a 5-door. Also, apart from the above, the base Yaris gets a split-folding rear seat and height-adjustable driver's seat. For the first time, a navigation system is optional on the Yaris across all trims. However, the Yaris doesn’t offer some features like leather upholstery or heated seats in any model.

We Recommend

We recommend the middle LE trim as it offers the best of both the other trims while maintaining the price rise. The Yaris is a very pleasant car to drive; the small size and low weight make it easy to steer the vehicle. Also, it provides a ton of features with good fuel economy figures and really good looks with high-quality interiors.

Engine and Performance
4.9/10

The Yaris has only one engine on offer, a 1.5L I-4. This engine makes 106 hp @6,000 rpm and 103 lb.-ft @4,200 rpm. You can choose between two transmissions, a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.

However, this automatic transmission is the only transmission you can get on the five-door L hatchback and all LE models. The Yaris is a front-wheel-drive car. The hatchback reaches the 60 mph mark in 8.9 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 17 seconds.

The Yaris is a fast car with a decent top speed of 120 mph. However, as numbers speak, the Honda Fit is very quick on its feet and beats both the cars in the 0-60 race as well as the quarter-mile drag by a second. Driving the Yaris told us that the manual transmission is the one to go for, the automatic feels very slow and outdated.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Toyota Yaris shows its dominance in the fuel economy section as it offers a mileage of 30 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 33 mpg combined. However, we wish Toyota would have given it a slight bump in the fuel tank capacity so that it could give a better range as it maxes out at 333 miles in the city and 410.7 miles on the highway.

The Fiesta Hatchback is leading the range battle with the 446.4 miles range that it offers. The powerful Honda, on the other hand, does give you performance but eats away at the mileage. Its 10-gallon tank makes things worse. Considering what we have in this review, the Yaris finds the middle ground and sits there comfortably.

Interior
6.0/10

The one thing that makes the interior stand out is just how simple it is to just sit and enjoy. When you add simplicity to a lot of rich materials and a better finish, you get a very likable interior. The large speedometer tells all the information, and the high-mounted seats offer a good view of the road. However, the lack of a telescopic steering wheel can make long journeys troublesome.

The use of hard plastics comes as an eye-sore among the otherwise overall high-quality interiors. Cabin space is excellent in the Yaris, but the receding roofline makes it difficult for tall passengers to sit comfortably. You can comfortably sit 2 adults in the rear. The hatchback comes with a cargo capacity of 15.3 cu-ft.

In comparison, all three cars have a similar amount of space for front-seat passengers. The Honda Fit offers a little more extra space in the front row. The feel at the rear row will be the same, as the cars are very much similar. When considering cargo capacity, the Honda’s 16.6 cubic feet trunk stands out. Again, the Yaris finds a middle ground in interior dimensions. Some standout interior features include:

  • Cruise Control
  • Interior Air Filtration
  • Single zone front air conditioning
  • Tilt-adjustable Steering Wheel
  • Heated Mirrors

How intuitive is the 2015 Toyota Yaris’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system on the Yaris has got a decent upgrade compared to last year with a lot of features on offer.

The touchscreen infotainment interface is standard, and it is connected to a 6-speaker sound system and is equipped with the Entune audio system. Some standout infotainment features include:

  • 6.1” touchscreen
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • USB port
  • Voice recognition
  • Navigation system (optional)
  • Bluetooth connectivity

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2015 Toyota Yaris has a lot of European design influence on it. Also, its design sense is very unique, unlike most Toyota cars.

A tall, proportional stance, while maintaining an arching design, but with a sense of style and fashion can turn a few heads towards the Toyota. The car built looks firm and is very attractive. The SE trim looks very sporty, and Toyota has done a good job with the SE’s cosmetics.

The Yaris is the lightest car in this comparison with a curb weight of 2,315 lbs. The less length and the tight wheelbase also make it a very nimble turner. The other two cars, although not behind, don’t really shine as much. The Fiesta is very close to the ground as well, at 4.3 inches, whereas the Toyota stands tallest at 5.5 inches. Some noteworthy exterior features of the Yaris are:

  • Massive Headlamps
  • Fog lamps
  • A rear spoiler
  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • LED running lights

Safety
8.7/10

The Yaris scored a 4-star rating in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA. It has a respectable safety rating, but not the best. There are better cars out in the market with better safety ratings and better occupant protection standards. As standard, it comes equipped with features like brake assist, traction control, and ABS. Some standout safety specifications include:

  • Daytime running lights
  • Electronic Stability control
  • Airbag Occupancy sensor
  • Side impact beams
  • Tire-Pressure Monitoring System

Final Verdict

The 2015 Toyota Yaris is certainly not a segment leader; it is a car that finds a middle ground in most of the places. Its rich standard feature content, extremely reasonable price, and reliability make the Yaris a very strong option in this entry segment. The refreshed interior and better styling for the year 2015 make it a more fashionable car, which is easy to drive and comfortable on the inside. However, better options are available in the segment for a similar price range.
