About 2016 BMW X5

4.1

Overall Rating

The 2016 BMW X5 offers an inline six cylinder engine that has linear torque and power and an enhanced ride quality.

The BMW X5 is a versatile car. It can be the car for family outings, a daily driver and also can delight you with some off-road fun. Inspite of the car's heavy weight and big proportions, the X5 is easy to drive and very nimble. It is the most recommended choice for a luxury midsize SUV. The X5 is the most balanced option as it offers the most of each in terms of performance, economy, interior and safety. The X5 entires the 2016 model year without any changes.

However, the X5 has a few downsides. The optional third row for the X5 does no good to adults, and is best suited for kids. The X5 costs really high compared to its rivals, and the rivals offer nearly the same equipment as well. Also, the front has too many design elements that makes it look busy with itself.

We recommend buying the xDrive50i and comes with many additional features in the form of options. The standard equipment is good which includes 16-way power-adjustable seats, four-zone climate control, and even satellite radio make it worth the extra money put into the car.

Engine and Performance
9.2/10

The BMW X5 is powered by a 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-6 which makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic which directs all the power to the rear wheels or all the wheels. The X5 50i comes with a larger 4.4-liter turbocharged engine making 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. This variant only comes with an all-wheel-drive. The car is coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The performance of the X5 is highly refined and linear. The gearing is precise, and the shifts are smooth and quick. The V8 is a beast of an engine, with mad acceleration and enthralling performance.

Steering and Handling

The ride on the X5 is very plush, with no wind noise transferred to the inside. No matter where you drive, the X5 delivers great handling, a smooth drive and a fun drive. The suspension is set perfectly, being soft on the roads but offering enough firmness around corners. The optional 20-inch wheels make the ride slightly uncomfortable.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The BMW X5 offers 18 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and a combined mpg of 21. The BMW X5 comes with a fuel capacity of 22.4 gallons. This allows the BMW X5 to have a range of 403 miles in the city, 560 miles on the highway, and a combined range of 470 miles. The BMW X5 50i trim gives a combined mpg of 17, with 15 in the city and 21 on the highway. The larger displacement engine is a thirsty one.

Exterior
8.0/10

The BMW X5 is a big car and is bold when it comes to its styling. It may be a mid-size SUV but looks larger than it is. The exterior definitely comes with many more features than when it first came. The biggest of the exterior features is a design option with M sport styling. This brings M-sport black wheels up to 20 inches and black exterior accents and even a few color schemes.

The Luxury line brings you chrome accents on the exterior and has more features on the inside. Then come the optional extras for the exterior which come in the form of accessories that include roof rails, black window surrounds, and even wheel design options. The standard range of BMW paint options is available with few available at a small extra cost.

The 2016 Porsche Cayenne has the better driving dynamics over the BMW X5. It can get expensive, but its worth all the money. The Cayenne handles like a true Porsche, extremely stable and planted. The interiors on the Porsche are rich, premium and the five seater car is super comfortable.

The BMW has the option to be a seven-seter, but that's an option no one will take as the rear row is cramped and it eats up cargo space.
