Overall Rating

Offering a more than average fuel economy, the car has a reputation for good mileage figures. Another specialty of the vehicle is the spacious interiors, which can be seen on larger and more luxury SUVs

Priced at $28,700 for the base trim, the Ford Edge offers a 2.0 Liter Inline 4 cylinder engine. The Ford Edge is greatly known for its maneuverability and compactness. Offering more than average fuel economy, the car has a reputation for good mileage figures. Another specialty of the vehicle is the spacious interiors, which can be seen on larger and more luxury SUVs. It is perfect for a family of 5 persons, but if you have more members, then you have to shift your choice to some other SUV which offers more seating capacity.

The Ford Edge, sits perfectly in between a crossover and a full size SUV, offering best of both the worlds while not compromising on the things it needs to have. The Edge is a well-behaved vehicle on the road and is easy to maneurve as well. With all the things being done right by the Ford Edge, lets take a closer look to understand this car more.

We recommend you go with the Titanium trim. It has a vast range of features which will be able to satisfy the minds of most customers. Additionally, it is a more value for money option too. It includes a touch of luxury with the leather upholstery, heated front seats for where the weather likes to be on the lower end of the thermometer and rear parking sensors for easy parking.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

As can be seen from the table, the 2016 Ford Edge SUV is available in 4 major trims. The base trim SE starts for a price of $28,700 and goes all the way up to the top trim Sport, which is available for $40,900. Being the top-end trim, it features all the features that are absent in the lower-end trims. However, there is a difference of more than $10,000 between the base and the top-end trims.

It includes a touch of luxury with the leather upholstery, heated front seats for where the weather likes to be on the lower end of the thermometer and rear parking sensors for easy parking.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The 2016 Ford Edge is powered by a turbocharged 2.0 Liter 4 cylinder engine. It churns out 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. The car uses a front-wheel-drive layout, with a 6-speed automatic transmission taking care of the shifting duties of the car. The Sport trim uses a turbocharged 2.7L V6 engine that makes 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. An AWD option is also available. The SEL and Titanium trims can also opt for a 3.5L V6 naturally aspirated engine that makes 280 hp and 250 lb-ft.

The Ford Edge really has an ‘edge’ over its competitors for its balanced ride quality and responsive steering. Most of the journeys on this car can be said to be smooth.

Both the Chevrolet Traverse and the Hyundai Santa Fe offer a V6 powertrain while the Mazda and the Ford feel left out with its Inline 4 setup. Naturally, the power pump from the higher displacement engines will be greater than those with smaller displacement. So the Chevrolet and the Hyundai have better power output than the Ford. However, the I-4 on the Mazda makes peak torque accessible in the lower rpm ranges, making it a useful city driver.

Acceleration and Braking

The 2016 Ford Edge accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds, and the quarter-mile time takes 15.7 seconds. The top speed is the highest, at 130 mph. The Traverse is the quickest of the lot, taking only 6.5 seconds to hit the 0-60 mph mark but a slow 15.6 seconds for the quarter-mile. The Mazda CX-9 takes the same amount of time as the Edge, at 7.2 seconds to the 60 mph mark. The Santa Fe is the slowest with its 7.8 seconds time for the 0-60 mph run.

Steering and Hanlding

The Ford Edge is a lot like a car in terms of handling. The car handles well, maintaining its weight with nearly zero body roll in turns. The interiors hardly get any wind or roadd noise at high speeds, and the refinement levels are top-notch. The ride is very composed and fluidic, offering no troubles along the way.

The car's steering is direct and responsive. The Edge turns as per command, and transmits all required information to the driver about the road. The tires offer enough grip, and the suspenson setup works brilliant. Overall, the ride quality due to the handling and steering is impressive.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2.0 Liter Inline 4 base engine of the Ford Edge is good with mileage numbers. It returns a fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. The 2016 Mazda CX-9 has a similar engine, though it is higher in displacement. The Mazda CX-9 performs well above average to deliver an efficiency of 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined. The fuel economy for Ford is not the best but it is quite decent. Opting for the All-Wheel Drive and the V6 engine will result in a substantial decrease in fuel consumption for the Ford with 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Interior
7.9/10

Talking about the interiors, the interiors on the Ford Edge have a lot of soft-touch finishes everywhere. Basically, whereever you look, you will see soft-touch materials that indulge a sense of premiumness and upscale interiors. The interiors have a lot of light coming in thanks to the large windows, making the interior appear more roomy than it already is .Quality and fit and finish are up to mark, as expected. The only issue is the center console, that is made of hard plastics and makes the experience a little dull.

The Ford Edge has a seating capacity of 5 passengers. The first and second row of seats offer more than generous space. The cabin is quite spacious and comfortable. The rear seats have such an ample space that three adult passengers can sit comfortably on the rear seats.

Exterior
8.0/10

A front massive grille, in a trapezoidal shape is present in the front. The Ford emblem takes its position in the middle segment of the grille. It resembles the Ford EcoSport in exterior design but the Edge is more appealing. There are a lot of new details on this Edge. Most of the surfaces have seen a reshaping, and the sides have a more defined shoulder-line. The rear potrays wrap-around taillights, with a prominent rear pillar that gives the car a sport-wagon look at the rear. The exhausts have chrome-finished pockets which enhance the look even more.

There is no data on the curb weight of the Ford Edge. The Edge is the shortest car in this comparo, but has the third-most width and height. The Edge's wheelbase sits at 112.2 inches, pretty tight.

Competition

2016 Ford Edge vs 2016 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse offers a smooth ride and a very powerful V6 engine. It is big on interiors, has a huge cargo space and also is a big car. The Traverse can be a good alternative to full-size SUVs. But the Traverse drinks up a lot of gas, and the ride feels heavy.

The Edge is comparatively smaller, but big on the interior space with decent cargo capacity. The interior are more upscale than on the Traverse, and also the Sport model is a real treat. The Traverse is cheaper than the Edge by around $1500.

2016 Ford Edge vs 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe

The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe is good for bigger families: its decent interior space with the calm and relaxed engine offers a very smooth ride quality and a refined experience. The third row is short, but at least it has one, the Edge does not have any. However, the Santa Fe has not been safety rated yet, which is a bummer.

The Edge handles better than the Santa Fe. Also the Edge has better safety ratings and higher reliabilty as well. The Santa Fe, is more afforable than the Edge. If you don't need a third row, go for the Edge.

2016 Ford Edge vs 2016 Mazda CX-9

The 2016 Mazda CX-9 is a direct rival. It offers amazing looks, a lot of luxurious interior features and a pwerful engine over the Edge. The CX-9 can accomodate more people as well, however the interiors might seem a little tight.  It can also tow upto 3500 pounds.

The Edge also got redesigned last year itself, and has got more features on the inside. The rear space is a lot more, and the cargo space is good as well. The Edge aso gets two very powerful engine options over the Mazda CX-9. The Ford Edge has a better fuel economy as well. All in all the Mazda CX-9 is the better pick.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Ford Edge can be called a very good mid-size SUV. It has an appealing look and presentable design characteristics. Combined with spacious interiors and comfortable seating, the car proves to be quite a sweet spot for adult passengers. A great fuel economy is its other perks. Also, the safety ratings of this car are high. So, it should be considered a viable buying option.
