About 2016 Ford Escape

4.2

Overall Rating

Amongst its rivals the Escape feels the sportiest and it also sacrifices some comfort to chase the sportiness of the focus as well.

The Ford Escape is based on the sporty Focus hatchback, and as expected, the sportiness of the Focus is carried over to the Escape. It drives exactly how a larger, heavier, and taller Focus would drive. Amongst its rivals the Escape feels the sportiest and it also sacrifices some comfort to chase the sportiness of the focus as well. The Escape still looks like more of a SUV rather than a crossover which for some is a good thing as not everyone is a fan of the domesticated looks of a typical crossover.

The pricing for the Ford Escape starts at $23,590 for the base trim. The car is pretty well packed even on lower trims and offers a decent performance as well. The Escape gets a good fuel economy, with a large cargo, a hands-free power liftgate and an optional all-wheel drive as well. The Ford Escape is one of the favourates in this segment of midsize SUVs.

The SE trim has the more efficient 1.6L turbocharged engine along with many better features over the base S trim like power-adjustable seats, upgraded cloth upholstery, optional dual-zone climate control, and much more. The price for the SE trim is also quite affordable for what it has to offer, thus being the best option in the lineup.

Engine and Performance
8.7/10

Fortunately, there are a variety of engine options in which the 2016 Ford Escape can be availed. The base 2.5L inline 4 engine generates 168 horsepower along with 170-foot pounds of torque through a 6-speed automatic gearbox and pushes the Escape to 60 miles per hour in 9.2 seconds. Meanwhile, a 1.6L turbocharged inline 4 in the SE and the Titanium trim performs just as good if not better than the base engine.

The turbocharged engine of the SE trim puts out 178 horsepower along with 184-foot pounds of torque, while providing significantly better fuel efficiency. Last but not the least, the top of the range optional 2.0L turbo-petrol engine, which is optional in the SE and Titanium trims, puts out 240 horsepower and 270 foot-pounds of torque, which propels the Escape to 60 miles per hour in just 7.0 seconds while providing commendable fuel efficiency.

According to reports, there is a long line of rivals waiting to beat Ford at its game. Although, we have selected just a few, out of which, it is the Japanese aftermath of Honda CR-V that outshines all the crossovers with the best tuned 2.4L engine producing 185 horses and 181 lb.-ft. of torque. It is closely followed in terms of power by the Korean car Kia Sportage, while the Nissan Rogue is the next to compete in terms of wheel spin. The CR-V torque also kicks in earlier than the rest. The Kia is the cheapest of the lot.

Acceleration and Braking

The Ford Escape moves from 0-60 mph in around 9.2 seconds. That's the slowest on the board. The Nissan is just there, with a 9.1 seconds time to get to 60 mph. The CR-V outshines with a 0-60 mph time of 8.3 seconds, whereas the Kia is 0.5 seconds behind at 8.8 seconds. In terms of quarter-mile, except the CR-V, all the cars take around 17 seconds whereas the CR-V takes 16.6 seconds. The Ford has the highest top speed among these four.

The Ford is the quickest to stop, taking only 115 feet from 60-0 mph. It is followed by the Sportage, at 118 feet; whereas the CR-V and the Rogue take the most at 124 feet. The Sportage and the Rogue have the biggest front brakes whereas the CR-V has the biggest rear brake.

Steering and Handling

The handling of the Ford Escape is great. The car turns to every inputs the way you want it to. The Escape retains most of its hatchback influence in the driving as well, and that has paid off. The car provides a tremendous view of the road in front, offering complete control over its movements. The suspension is not too hard, nor too soft; perfect as it should be and thus giving the required ride comfort as well.

The steering of the Escape is accurate and sharp, inspiring confidence and interacting with the driver. The entire suspension system, the steering all work together to provide the driver with all the information needed to go faster. The car has some body roll in turns, however.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Escape has been exhibiting fuel economy flexibility with all the powertrains in place. There is no other vehicle in the segment that is as resilient as the Escape in terms of choice of powertrains. EPA has rated the base 2.5L inline 4 base engine at 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined, whereas the 1.6L turbocharged inline 4 is rated at 23 mpg in the city, 32 mpg in the highway, and 26 mpg combined. The 2.0L inline-4 is rated at 22 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined. All these figures are explicitly at par with the segment expectations.

Interior
7.2/10

The cabin of the Escape isn't as spacious as some of the competitors like the class-leading Honda CR-V but it still is a nice place to be in with ample room on both rows. However, the dash is designed awkwardly, and it eats up front knee room for taller individuals. The headroom is quite substantial, and in the absence of the panoramic sunroof, it feels more than enough for an average individual.

Apart from the dash taking away the convenience of knee room, Ford’s front seats also feel a little extra firm and small in nature, but fortify the occupants strongly. Moreover, the driver’s seat gets the privilege of being adjusted in 10 different ways, including powered lumbar support. As for the cargo space, we appreciate the optional two-position load floor that gives a choice between a flat floor and maximum storage space, as well as the enclosed cargo bin, which is relatively tall and square and can hold 34.3 cubic feet of unattended bags and goodies inside.

With an overall length of about 178 inches and a 106-inch wheelbase, the Escape is a few inches shorter than the Honda CR-V, but its wheelbase is nearly three inches longer, which hints at how its cabin feels nearly as spacious. Its 40.4 inches of front legroom measure up against the CR-V's 41.3 inches, and in the back, the Escape's 36.8 inches of space line up against the Honda's 38.3 inches. Overall, the Escape feels less ergonomic than its competitors, although you may find interior appointments that are on par with the best in this class, and better than most other models in this price range. However, the plastic interior treatments tend to rob the attention in a pessimistic way. Some on the interior features on the FOrd Escape are:

  • Tilting and telescopic steering column
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Memory driver's seat
  • Power driver's seat
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Dual Zone Climate Control

2016 Ford Escape Infotainment:

Despite its shortcomings in practicality and ergonomics, Ford has kept a good hand on the Escape’s feature list. However, these amenities are tailored to suit the respective trims which are being considered. For instance, the basic S trim comes with only some elementary features, including air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD player with six speakers, and an auxiliary jack.

Meanwhile, as you climb up the ladder, the list gets more sophisticated. The Titanium trim also adorns Ford’s Bluetooth-driven SYNC controller, which uses voice commands to run phone and audio systems, with information displayed on a 4.0-inch color screen. The summarized list of infotainment adornments on the Escape is as follows:

  • USB Ports
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Speed-Sensitive Volume Control
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • Navigation
  • Bluetooth
  • 4.0 inch Driver Information Display

Cargo Capacity

The Escape's cargo capacity is not bad, but not great as well. It offers a standard space of 34.3 cu-ft and a maximum cargo capacity of 67.8 cu-ft. The Titanium trim gets a handsfree liftgate feature as well.

Exterior
8.0/10

If the Escape was to be described in a few words in terms of its exterior design, calling it a beefed-up Ford Focus wouldn't be wrong. The boxy shape of the original Escape has disappeared. The Escape now looks sporty, sleek, and to be accurate, the car looks modern without losing the traditional SUV charm. The Escape now is easily one of the most stylish compact crossover SUVs you can buy.

We like the look of the HID headlights, dual-chrome exhaust tips, and big 19-inch wheels on upper-tier Escape models. It obviously takes its inspiration from hatchbacks, running shoes, and outdoor gear. With its long nose, we see hints of the Ford Focus (on which it's based) made it through here intact. From the side, it's crisp bodylines and dynamic shaping impart a sexy look, but in front, the mail-slot-sized grille still looks like an odd, cut-and-paste cue to us. The top Titanium trim gets a little more visual differentiation on the outside, with grill radiator shutters and silver roof rails.

Overall, the design is more interesting and exciting than some of its competitors. The Escape looks aggressive and draws attention as there is nothing like it on the road. Meanwhile, the numbers suggest that the Escape also takes a hit when it comes to dimensions. The Nissan Rogue is truly massive, whereas the Kia is the smallest. Besides, the Escape is considerably high on weight, perhaps making it the heaviest 5-seater in the segment. The Esccape does sit taller from the ground than any other car. Some of the exterior features are:

  • Splash guards
  • LED tail lights
  • Foot-operated liftgate
  • Power liftgate
  • Heated Rear View Mirror
  • Panoramic Sunroof

Safety
8.4/10

In recent years, Ford’s R&D department has focused more on safety than any other manufacturers in the United States. This has remarkably raised the bar for all its competitors. However, the brand’s vision can be seen falling a bit short here since the Escape may be devoid of some extraordinary safety features. Nevertheless, the Ford Escape's safety equipment is typical for its class, but its crash-test scores have at least one disappointing blemish. The NHTSA gives the Escape a four-star overall rating, with a five-star rating for side-impact protection. That's average for the class.

While the Escape has earned mostly top-tier scores from the IIHS, it received an embarrassing "Poor" score in the new, tough small-overlap front-impact test. At the same time, Ford’s additional safety equipment can be put to great use. Ford also has made a rearview camera standard on the Escape. Front and rear parking sensors are offered as options, while rear sensors are standard on the Titanium trim level. Blind-spot monitors are optional. Some safety features available on the Ford Escape are as follows:

  • Airbags Personal Safety System for driver and front passenger includes dual-stage front airbags, safety belt pretensioners
  • Airbags Safety Canopy System with side-curtain airbags and rollover sensor
  • AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control) and Curve Control
  • LATCH Lower Anchors and Tether Anchors for Children (rear outboard seating positions)
  • SOS Post-Crash Alert System
  • SecuriLock Passive Anti-Theft System
  • Belt-Minder front safety belt reminder
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (excludes spare)

Competition
8.0/10

2016 Ford Escape vs 2016 Honda CR-V

The 2016 Honda CR-V is not as fun to drive as the Escape, but its more composed, with a linear power delivery. The CR-V is more economical as well, with its better feul efficiency. The interiors are spacious, with a huge cargo space on the rear and a lot of easy controls. Both the cars are similarly priced as well.

The Ford Escape gets lower safety ratings when compared to the CR-V. Also the CR-V beats the Escape in terms of reliability, and ownership costs by a mragin.

2016 Ford Escape vs 2016 Kia Sportage

The 2016 Kia Sportage is the better looking car. The turbocharged optional engine is more powerful and fun, and offers immense control as well. The Kia is behind the Escape in terms of fuel economy, but its by a slight margin. The Kia, however, is cheaper than the Ford.

The Kia gets a better safety rating than the Escape and has a better reliability as well. The Escape does have more roomier interiors and and a better ride quality.

2016 Ford Escape vs 2016 Nissan Rogue

The 2016 Nissan Rogue offers three things: top-notch ride quality, premium interiors and a higher fuel economy. The car takse pride in the ton of features it offers, on the inside. The performance of the Escape is better, even though numbers show the Rogue to be the faster. The ride quality on the Escape is much more smooth and refined.

However, the Nissan Rogue offers an array of safety features that don't come on the Escape. The Rogue and the Escape have similar safety ratings as well. The Escape is more reliable than the Rogue, but the Rogue is the better car overall.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Ford Escape is more focused on delivering a fun and joyful driving experience rather than the day to day usability of a typical crossover like the CR-V. The harsh truth is that buyers in this segment aren't looking for what the Escape has to offer which is 'performance,' instead buyers want practicality and fuel efficiency which some of its competitors offer. Overall, the Escape is a great vehicle if you can ignore the awkward position of the dash that eats up knee room and really want a somewhat practical vehicle that can also stand upto performance whenever necessary.
