Pros

Features such as electric seats and heated seats etc, Style of the outside and inside

Cons

How hard leather seats are to clean, How the tv screen messed up

2016 Ford Fusion Review

Pros

  • Frugal turbocharged engine
  • Sharp and composed ride and handling
  • Silent cabin
  • Latest technology and safety features
  • Stylish exterior design

Cons

  • Unintuitive electronics interface
  • Poor fuel economy in comparison

The Ford Fusion has managed to sprint to the top of the sales table from being a middle bencher after its recent redesign three years ago.

Overview

The Ford Fusion has managed to sprint to the top of the sales table from being a middle bencher after its recent redesign three years ago. Such was the level of perfection that Ford managed to achieve with the Fusion. It offers a powerful and fuel-efficient powertrain, attractive styling, latest technology, and safety features, that too at a price that is competitive to the segment.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The Ford Fusion is offered in three trims with two engine options. The powerful turbocharged engine is available from the AWD SE trim onwards. The base trim ticks all the right boxes and offers everything that is necessary to its buyers, while the SE trim adds a few more features to the mix. To enjoy the Fusion completely, one needs to shell out more money and opt for the Titanium trim that features all the bells and whistles one could ask for in the segment.

The SE trim with the all-wheel-drive drivetrain offers the more powerful turbocharged engine and hence should be the preferred choice. The AWD adds more practicality, while additional technology and features in the SE trim like 17" alloy wheels, 8-way power driver seat, 6-speaker audio system, and more add more value to the car.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

The Ford Fusion is offered with two engine options: the base trim gets a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 175 hp and 175 lb-ft, while the higher trims get a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that is rated for 231 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque.

Both the engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the power is sent to the front wheels as standard with an option for an AWD setup. The base trim touches the 60 mph mark in 8.8 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 16.6 seconds.

The performance from the base engine is lackluster as it takes almost 9 seconds to achieve 60 mph from a standstill in a straight line. The Toyota Camry is the most expensive of the lot but is also the quickest of them all, while the Hyundai Sonata is the most affordable and is only marginally slower than the Toyota. The Nissan Altima performs similarly to the Sonata and is priced on par with the Fusion.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The base engine’s lackluster performance might lead many to think of it as an efficiency tuned engine, but that is not the case as well. The combined city and highway rated fuel economy of 26 mpg is below average in the segment, and hence the more powerful turbocharged engine’s 25 mpg combined economy makes more sense to most buyers. The 16.5-gallon fuel tank is also a tad on the smaller side and limits the driving range to about 400 miles on a single tank of gas.

The Nissan Altima is the most frugal car in this comparison, with the Hyundai Sonata being marginally less efficient. Both the cars feature large gas tanks that aid in achieving long driving ranges. The Camry too is more frugal than the Fusion and also has a slightly larger fuel tank, resulting in a superior driving range.

Interior
7.6/10

The cabin of the Fusion has a modern and urbane look to it with the decluttered dashboard design and high-quality materials that have nice textures to them.

There is abundant space on offer for all the occupants, both at the front and the back, while the trunk too is one of the largest in the segment. The sloping rear roof does make rearward visibility a bit of an issue, but the rearview camera helps ease up things. The sedan comes with a cargo capacity of 16 cubic feet.

The Hyundai Sonata has the most spacious front row of seats in here, but it compromises on the rear seat space, while the Camry is exactly the opposite, offering the most legroom at the back but eating up space at the front. The Nissan Altima too is similar to the Sonata, and hence the Fusion offers the best combination of front and rear seat space. Major interior features include-

  • 10-way power front seat w/3 memory settings
  • Leather-Trimmed Heated Sport Bucket Front Seats
  • 60-40 Folding Bench Rear Seat
  • Tilt/Telescoping Leather/Metal-Look Steering Wheel
  • Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Chrome/Aluminum Interior Accents
  • Leatherette Door Trim Insert

How is the 2016 Ford Fusion Sedan’s infotainment system?

The base radio and climate controls are still somewhat complicated to use and less aesthetically pleasing, but the 8-inch screen not only looks slick but also adds a lot of features alongside voice commands that enhance the overall experience of the car.

The system has improved since it was first released, but it still can be slow to respond, and there is also a learning curve to it. Major infotainment features available with the sedan are-

  • 8.0-inch SYNC w/MyFord Touch infotainment system
  • 4.2-inch driver instrument cluster
  • 12-speaker 390W Sony premium audio system
  • HD Radio
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio w/6-month prepaid subscription
  • GPS based turn-by-turn driving directions
  • Bluetooth

Exterior
9.0/10

Similar to the interior, the Fusion’s exterior also flaunts elegance with a slick and urbane design that is very pleasing to the eyes.

The large front grille with slim projector headlights gives the car a mean and aggressive front fascia, while the smooth straight flowing body lines make the car feel a lot more European. The sedan weighs 3,431 lbs and stands 6.4 inches above the ground.

All the sedans present in this comparison are almost identical in terms of dimensions and hence also weigh more or less similar to one another. The Fusion has the longest wheelbase, while both the Japanese have the shortest ones. The Fusion also offers the highest ground clearance, while the Hyundai Sonata rides closest to the ground, measuring 6.4 and 5.3 inches, respectively. Major exterior highlights of the sedan are-

  • Fully Automatic Projector Beam Halogen Daytime Running Headlamps w/Delay-Off
  • LED Brakelights
  • Perimeter/Approach Lights and Front Fog Lamps
  • Power Heated Side Mirrors w/Driver Auto Dimming, Convex Spotter, and Turn Signal Indicator
  • Wing Spoiler
  • Chrome Grille, Side Windows Trim, and Door Handles
  • 18-inch Premium Polished Aluminum Wheels

Safety
9.2/10

Ford takes safety very seriously with almost all its cars, and the list of available safety and driver assistance programs in the Fusion is a testament to that.

Add to that the perfect 5-star safety ratings from the NHTSA and solid safety test scores from the IIHS, the value of the car in terms of safety gets doubled. There is adequate safety equipment on offer, and a highlight of them is listed below.

  • AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Driveline Traction Control
  • 911 Assist Emergency SOS
  • Rear Parking Sensors w/Back-Up Camera
  • Mykey System
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Front, Seat-Mounted Side, and Knee Airbags
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags

Final Verdict

The Ford Fusion is one of the best-selling Ford products today apart from its trucks, and that is for a particular reason. It has power and efficient engine options, is spacious on the inside, has great looks, and also offers plenty of features. Apart from the average performance from the base engine and the MyFord Touch system, there is hardly anything to fault out in this car, making it a decent choice for in the segment.
