2016 Jeep Cherokee Review

The Jeep Cherokee is one of the most popular crossoverSUVsfrom FCA. The 2016 model comes with a refresh. The capable compact crossover adds more flair by introducing another top-of-the-line trim called the Overland. The Overland trim comes packed with features and tech, which makes it stand out from the competition.

The Jeep Cherokee is one of the most popular crossover SUVs from FCA. The 2016 model arrives with a much-needed refresh and the capable compact crossover adds more flair by introducing another top-of-the-line trim called the Overland. The Overland trim comes packed with features and tech, which makes it stand out from the competition. The Overland trim of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee lineup comes with an option to have a 3.2L Pentastar V6 motor that delivers amazing performance.

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee sits in the same compact SUV segment as its sibling the Jeep Compass, however, it provides more value for money and is more appealing to the eye. You get AWD on all trims, which makes it on par with the Subaru OutbackHyundai Santa Fe, and the Ford Edge. FCA claims that the all-new Cherokee is more reliable with the new powertrain. Well, let's dig a bit deeper to see how it fares in front of peers in the segment.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The all-new 2016Jeep Cherokee comes in 8 different trims. This includes the special edition 75th Anniversary trim that comes at $27,900 and the all-new Overland trim that sits on the top at $34,695. The base Altitude trim comes at $24,495 and packs 18-inch wheels and standard equipment on board. Even in the low-spec trim, the cabin seems well laid out and the powertrain is available with AWD. The range-topping Overland trim comes with an extra powertrain choice that includes a 3.2L Pentastar V6 engine.

We Recommend

The top of the line Overland trim with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 is the most preferred choice. The engine is a gem and the capable chassis always craved a powerful engine. The motor feels perfect for all purposes and happily drives all day with less effort. You also get class-leading tech onboard the precisely engineered cabin. Overall, the 3.2L V6 engine from FCA has proven its part in many vehicles from the manufacturer.

Engine and Performance
7.7/10

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee comes with a 2.4L inline-4 turbocharged engine as standard. The standard motor produces 184 horsepower at 6,400 RPM. The engine also builds a peak torque of 171 lb-ft at around 4,600 RPM. This gives you a nice and progressive powerband to play with. The Overland version comes with a 3.2L Pentastar V6 engine that puts out a whopping 371 horsepower at a high revving 6,500 RPM along with a peak torque of 239 lb-ft which gushes at 4,400 RPM. The Jeep Cherokee makes use of a standard 9-speed automatic transmission unit and can be either channeled as an FWD or 4WD variant.

On paper, the Subaru Outback in the 3.6R trim is the most powerful one in the lot. The 6-cylinder flat plane inline engine produces over 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. However, the power is delivered in a much linear manner, which makes it feel slower off the line. On the other hand, the Ford Edge and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport come equipped with an inline-4 engine unit.

2016 Jeep Cherokee Acceleration

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee with its 3.6L V6 Pentastar might not be the quickest in the segment, but it fairs better than most of its competitors. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds and can cover a quarter-mile run in 15.3 seconds, managing a top speed of 128MPH. The base engine option, however, is slower but not completely underwhelming.

The Subaru Outback takes 7.5 seconds, however, with its powerful midrange performance catches up to cover the standing quarter-mile in just 15.7 seconds. The Outback also has the highest limited top speed of 143 mph. The 2016 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T AWD is the slowest to touch 60mpg, which takes over 8.6 seconds. However, Santa Fe feels the most refined and smoothest on the road.

2016 Jeep Cherokee Ride and Handling

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is one of the better compact SUVs available in the market. Its aplomb driving and riding capabilities put it on the map and are some of its unique takeaways. While the base engine feels does feel slow-moving, the higher-powered V6 engine is our choice. Irrespective of the engine option you end up choosing, the Jeep Cherokee's agility and nimbleness will definitely leave you surprised. While handling corners might not be its strongest suit, the compact SUV sports a precise steering system that feels definitive in its approach. The automatic transmission works efficiently and the Cherokee's brilliance lies in its off-roading capabilities that with its AWD variant gains adequate ground over its competitors.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee with the 2.4L inline-4 engine returns around 21 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway. However, the more capable 3.2L Pentastar V6 manages to return the same fuel economy, without compromising on performance. The 3.2L Pentastar V6 can return over 20 MPG in city driving conditions and over 28 MPH on the highway. The Jeep also gets a 15.8-gallon fuel tank that gives you over 442 miles of highway range on a full tank of gas.

The 2016 Ford Edge and the 2016 Jeep Cherokee returns identical mileage both in the city as well as on the highway. However, the Ford Edge gets the largest fuel tank at 18.0 gallons of capacity, which gives it an amazing 504 miles of highway range. The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport in the 2.0T trim is the least economic in the segment. Even with the downsized motor, the SUV barely returns 24 MPG on the highway. One of the major reasons being the 6-Speed torque converter type automatic transmission, which is quite old from the brand.

Interior
8.3/10

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee gets a well-built cabin with quality materials. The fit and finish of the dashboard seem pretty good, and the overall quality is great. The Jeep Cherokee can seat 5 with adequate space in both rows. However, there is a middle tunnel for the 4WD system, which may intrude on the comfort of the rear seat passenger in the middle. This makes it less practical than its rivals.

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee has a seating capacity similar to what is also the segment standard. While space upfront might not be the best-in-class,  it allows for a serene experience at the rear. There is ample storage space on the inside. The dashboard feels modern and is filled to the brim with exquisite features that make driving a hassle-free experience.

The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has the most pleasing cabin in the lot. The fit and finish are amazingly good with a wide range of standard features. The seats of the Santa Fe Sport are also more comfortable with better cushioning, which is typical of Hyundai. The 2016 ford Edge is larger in every dimension. The wide cabin opens up the most headroom and shoulder room inside, and also offers the most luggage space. The Subaru Outback does not lag behind in the aspect and performs appreciably like its competitors. Interior features of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee include-

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated Seats
  • Cooled Front Seats
  • Power Adjustable Driver Seats
  • Lumbar Support
  • Dual-Zone Climate control
  • Sunroof

Infotainment

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee comes with an updated infotainment system. As standard, you get a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system that offers basic features. The system offers Bluetooth connectivity, USB, and AUX plugs along with a basic audio system. The graphics in the 5-inch unit are crisp. However, the touch responses are not the best and loading menus take a while to respond.

The higher trims of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee come with a larger 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system. The system is slick to use, and the interface is easy to navigate. The large screen also has crisp graphics that offers great usability even while on the move. The system comes with a premium audio system from Alpine. The Audio is crisp and clear and offers a great base which makes it enjoyable. Major infotainment features of the SUV are-

  • 8.6-inch touchscreen
  • Uconnect interface
  • Alpine audio system
  • Bluetooth
  • USB
  • AUX

2016 Jeep Cherokee Cargo Capacity

The Jeep Cherokee has the smallest boot at 24.6 cu. ft. However, its rear row seats of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee can be folded down to open up to 54.9 cu. ft of storage volume.

Exterior
7.5/10

The Jeep Cherokee is a smart-looking crossover. The 7-slate grille from the brand offers typical Jeep styling with a high raised body cladded by large wheel arches. The Cherokee comes standard with 18-inch wheels that give the SUV a butch and rugged look. The black classing around the car makes it feel more rugged and off-road ready. The Jeep is the shortest in terms of length and wheelbase, which makes it feel cramped on the inside.

The Jeep however has polarizing styling, which may or may not please the buyers. It may not be the largest in terms of dimensions, however, it is the heaviest vehicle in the segment weighing 4,108 lbs. Its overall length of 182 inches is not the longest and consequently, even its wheelbase is relatively short. However, it shines where one expects it to. The 2016 Cherokee sports the highest clearance from the ground of 8.7 inches, making it apt for off-roading.

On the other hand, the Outback is the longest vehicle, while the 2016 Ford Edge is the widest and sports a best-in-class wheelbase of 112.2 inches. Some of the exterior features of the Jeep Cherokee are listed below.

2016 Jeep Cherokee vs 2016 Subaru Outback

The 2016 Subaru Outback carries a lower price sticker than the  Jeep Cherokee and consequently, its likability increases almost instantaneously. In the segment, it is the only other vehicle that is equipped with a V6 engine, however, the power that it generates is not enough to allow it to leap ahead of the 2016 Cherokee. In addition, its fuel economy is a notch lower and even interior space is comparable at best. But the 2016 Outback does lead in cargo capacity. At a difference in the price of less than a couple of thousand dollars, the Jeep Cherokee makes for a better option.

2016 Jeep Cherokee vs 2016 Ford Edge

Though the 2016 Ford Edge does not come standard with a V6 engine, its inline-4 unit is capable enough to dust any competitor in its league. It is the quickest and fastest vehicle in the segment, but most importantly, it upholds efficiency and manages one of the highest ranges in the segment. It remains ahead of every competitor with its enormous cargo capacity and even for passengers, space is never an issue. However, the Jeep Cherokee is more striking and appealing in design. So if you aim at traveling around in a looker of a vehicle, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee would be a great fit. Otherwise, we would go for the 2016 Edge.

2016 Jeep Cherokee vs 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is underwhelmingly slow, lacks the efficiency of its competitors, and lags behind its contemporaries in aspects more than one. Even on the inside, while there is ample space, it is smaller than most of its competitors. The only area where the 2016 Santa Fe Sport gains ground through its cargo capacity and is one of the better-looking vehicles in the segment. We recommend buying the 2016 Jeep Cherokee over the Hyundai despite its higher price because it is practical and remains usable even when off-roading.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is one of the most desirable SUVs in its class. The added trim level makes it more luxurious and capable, making the baby Jeep one of the most capable in the segment. However, the reliability ratings of the 2.4L engine still concern a wider range of buyers. If you want the best out of this SUV, go with the top-of-the-line Overland trim with its 3.2-liter V6 Pentastar engine.
