About 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3.9

Overall Rating

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV that comes with good offroading and towing capabilities. The base powertrain is a 3.6 liter V6, and it comes with an option of a more powerful 5.7 liter Hemi V8

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV that comes with good offroading and towing capabilities. Jeep has made a number of changes this year. The base 290-hp V6 engine gets a slight horsepower increase and improved fuel economy. The optional 360-hp V8 engine offers an agile acceleration and is available on all but the base trim. The 2016 Grand Cherokee's pricing ranges between $29,995 and $52,595.

The interior really is grand, it has an ample amount of space for people in the back row too. The infotainment system is good, and if needed, plenty of comfort options are available for people who want that. The trunk space is good as well, makes you wonder why you need to tow anything. Consequently, it lands in the same ballpark as the Ford Edge, the Nissan Murano, and the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.

We recommend buying the Limited trim with the 4WD drivetrain. This trim offers the best of what is available and you expect at this price point, these include leather seats, parking sensors, heated rear seats, 18” wheels, and a good amount of technology. We would not recommend the bigger engine, as the regular offering is plenty.

Owners who end up with a middle-grade Grand Cherokee are likely to be happy with its driving dynamics- Autoblog

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is powered by a 3.6L V6, which makes 290 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque. There is another engine option - a 5.7L V8, which makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. of torque. As standard, both engines are paired to 8-speed automatic transmissions which direct all the power to the rear wheels or all the wheels (4WD), depending on the drivetrain you select.

The ride and handling qualities of the Grand Cherokee remain true to the brand's level of refinement and sophistication. It is domineering in its drive and bestows a great sense of comfort to the driver. It handles well both in the city traffic and on the highway and maintains an authentic experience even during high-speed cornering.

In the performance tests, the Grand Cherokee does the 0-60 MPH sprint in 7.6 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 15.9 seconds and will achieve a top speed of 140 mph. When equipped with the V8, it completes the sprint in 6.7 seconds. Its braking capabilities are not the best in the segment but it takes 125 feet when decelerated from 60 MPH.

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport shines in this section thanks to its potent turbocharged engine. The Ford Edge is the most affordable car here and it also manages to perform much better than the Grand Cherokee. The CVT transmission in the Nissan Murano holds back in acceleration timings but still, it's decent.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

With a high curb weight and two old-school engines, the Grand Cherokee never delivered stellar gas mileage figures- Carbuzz

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's fuel economy is average for the class. It offers 19 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and a combined MPG of 22. The midsize SUV comes with a fuel capacity of 24.6 gallons, which gives it a range of 467 miles in the city, 640 miles on the highway, and 541 miles combined.

With the 5.7L V8, the fuel economy decreases, offering 17 MPG combined, which will make the range reduce to a mid-400-mile mark. However, with the base engine, the 2016 Grand Cherokee manages frugality better than most of its competitors, something that would attract buyers even more.

Exterior
8.5/10

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV has a familiar look that has worn well- Kelly Blue Book

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the best-looking SUVs out there. Each trim comes with its own exterior styling along with a lot of optional extras. The base trim features 17-inch with the option of 18-inch wheels. There is also the off-road Adventure I group pack, which adds a skid plate, tow hooks, a full-size spare wheel, and all-terrain tires. The Limited trim gets all off-road adventure I group as an optional extra as well.

The Summit trim adds 20” polished wheels to the mix along with a sports body kit and black exterior accents to make it look different from the rest. All trims of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee feature the traditional seven slate grille that allows it to fall into the brand's designing strategy. The short wheelbase of the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport doesn't compromise on its interior space. The Nissan Murano is comparatively longer in length. Therefore, parking it in tight spaces can be a challenge. The Ford Edge weighs a lot less than the Grand Cherokee and hence, it performs better on the road. Some other exterior features are:

  • 17-20-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Black grille w/ chrome accents
  • Black window trim
  • LED DRLs & taillights

Safety
9.1/10

Unfortunately, the only active safety feature that comes standard is blind-spot monitoring- CarAndDriver

The NHTSA has given the Jeep Grand Cherokee an overall safety rating of 5 out of 5 stars for the 4WD and a 4-star overall rating for the 2WD versions. In the IIHS tests, it has scored multiple “Good” rated scores in its individual tests but has failed to get a Top Safety Pick award from the organization.

That being said, the Grand Cherokee comes with many safety features. As standard, it gets electronic stability control, brake assist, and child safety locks. Most of the active safety features are optional. While the midsize SUV is safe, its reliability may not follow a similar suit. Some specialized safety specifications like:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Hands-free park assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Competition
9.0/10

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2016 Nissan Murano

The Nissan Murano falls into a competitive that prioritizes space and nimbleness in driving and it sure delivers it. It also boasts better fuel economy and more cargo space. Both lack enough standard safety features but the Murano earned top ratings in terms of safety. Therefore, the Murano seems a better pick here.

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2016 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is one of the most spacious cars in the class. Although it doesn't house powerful engines like the Grand Cherokee, its handling characteristics and fuel economy are great. However, it feels lethargic with the base engine and its interior quality feels cheap as well. Overall, the Edge is a good choice.

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is known for its high-end interior and ample user-friendly features. Both its engines feel peppy and are efficient in nature. Inside, the Santa Fe Sport is spacious and offers more cargo capacity than the Grand Cherokee. It also comes with standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a good midsize SUV. It comes with a good engine, although the option of putting a Hemi under the hood, two drivetrains for you to select from, and multiple trim levels with individual features, make it an attractive offering. The interior is spacious for everything you might want the SUV for and has a good amount of technology and safety features as well, making it a good SUV to get. It reflects top-notch craftsmanship and is a true off-roader to make it a typical offering from the brand.
