2016 Jeep Patriot Review

The Jeep Patriot is the last of the Jeeps from the poor old days of Chrysler, and yet it manages to garner a decent amount of sales. The major reason for that is the exceptionally low prices throughout its range and the renowned Jeep off-road capabilities that come even at that price point.

The Jeep Patriot is the last of the Jeeps from the poor old days of Chrysler, and yet it manages to garner a decent amount of sales. The major reason for that is the exceptionally low prices throughout its range and the renowned Jeep off-road capabilities that come even at that price point. It surely has been hit hard by the rivals that are a lot more sophisticated and make more sense in all aspects of ownership.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Jeep Patriot is offered in three different trim, two special editions, two engine options, and two drivetrain options. The three trims are Sport, Sport SE, and Latitude, while the special editions are High Altitude Edition and 75th Anniversary Edition. There is plenty to choose from in this regard, but the available list of creature comforts is pretty limited. All 4WD models come with a more powerful 172 hp engine, while the FWD models get the base engine.

We Recommend

Since there aren’t many features on offer and the prices of the trims are pretty low too, we recommend opting for the top-of-the-line Latitude trim with the 4WD drivetrain. The top-end trim not only gets almost all of the creature comforts but also features the larger and stronger engine.

Engine and Performance
5.4/10

The 2016 Jeep Patriot is powered by either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder 158 hp and 141 lb-ft engine or a larger 2.4-liter unit that is rated for 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. Both the engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission alongside an option for a CVT automatic transmission.

The power is sent to the front wheels with the base engine, while the larger 2.4L engine makes use of a 4-wheel drive system. The SUV touches the 60 mph mark in 9.0 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 17.2 seconds.

Despite being the most affordable, the Patriot has the highest engine output in this comparison and is pretty brisk too. The Mazda CX-5 is marginally quicker than the Jeep, thanks to its superior torque output, but is also the most expensive one here. The Honda HR-V is the slowest of the lot as it has the least amount of power and torque output.

Fuel Economy
7.3/10

Fuel efficiency has never been a strength for Jeep, and the Patriot is no exception. The base engine is rated for 26 mpg in combined city and highway driving, while the larger engine with 4WD does pretty good at 24 mpg. The 13.6-gallon fuel tank is pretty small, and that limits the driving range to just over 300 miles, which translates to frequent gas station visits.

The Mazda CX-5 is the most frugal car here and also features a larger gas tank as compared to the Patriot and hence has a much longer driving range to offer. The HR-V has marginally higher fuel consumption as compared to the Mazda but employs a smaller gas tank, which translates to a lower range. The Outlander Sport, on the other hand, has the highest fuel consumption but employs the largest gas tank of 16.6 gallons to compensate for it.

Interior
5.8/10

The cabin of the Patriot has seen tweaks over the years, but it still offers the most basic and rugged cabin with hard plastics everywhere. There is only tilt adjustment for the steering wheel, and the base trim even lacks power windows and air conditioning.

The seats are pretty comfortable for the front passengers but not so much for the rear passengers as the bottom cushion sits low which largely negates the benefits of the Latitude trim’s reclining rear seatbacks. The SUV comes with a cargo capacity of 23 cubic feet which can be increased up to 53.4 cubic feet by folding down the rear seat.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is the most spacious at the front but compromises at the rear alongside the cargo capacity. The Mazda CX-5 offers the best passenger space and cargo space in this comparison. The HR-V too is more spacious than the Patriot, both in terms of cargo and passenger space. Major interior features include-

  • 4-Way Front Seats
  • 60-40 Folding Bench Rear Seat
  • Leather/Metal-Look Steering Wheel
  • Remote Keyless Entry w/Integrated Key Transmitter
  • Chrome Interior Accents
  • Cruise Control

How is the 2016 Jeep Patriot SUV’s infotainment system?

The primary gauges of the Patriot look neat and have good visibility. Most of the controls are simple and straightforward too, with Jeep’s no-nonsense philosophy being continued.

The 6.5-inch touchscreen is well outdated, and the Patriot does not get the larger and updated 8.4-inch system used in other Jeep models. That being said, the optional flip-down liftgate speakers will help the owners get the camp party started wherever they go. Major infotainment features include-

  • 6.5-inch UConnect infotainment system
  • 4-speaker audio system
  • Bluetooth Wireless Phone Connectivity and Streaming Audio
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Voice Activation
  • Optional flip-down liftgate speakers

Exterior
7.0/10

The Patriot has a quintessentially Jeep front fascia with the basic round headlights, vertical slat front grille, and the chunky yet simple front bumper. The wheel arches are flared out, and the roof rails with thick all-road tires provide a purposeful look to the SUV.

The black plastic body cladding and bumper elements also add to the off-road appeal of the Patriot. The SUV weighs 3,136 lbs and stands 8.1 inches above the ground.

The Honda HR-V is the most compact car in this comparison, while the CX-5 is the largest one. All the SUVs weigh similarly except the HR-V which weighs a little lighter than the rest. The Mazda CX-5 and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport have the highest ground clearance, marginally more than the Patriot, while the HR-V rides the closest to the ground. Major exterior highlights of the SUV include-

  • Fully Automatic Aero-Composite Halogen Headlamps
  • Front Fog Lamps
  • Power Heated Side Mirrors
  • Body-Colored Grille
  • Black Side Windows Trim and Black Front Windshield Trim
  • Black Bodyside Cladding
  • 17-inch Granite Painted Pocket Wheels

Safety
7.8/10

Although the 2016 Jeep Patriot does fairly well in the crash test conducted by the NHTSA, scoring a 4-star overall rating out of a possible 5-stars, it does struggle in the tests conducted by the IIHS. There are hardly any safety features on offer apart from the mandatory ones and hence could be a concern for many buyers. Most of the available features have been listed below.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • Driveline Traction Control
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Front and Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning

Final Verdict

The 2016 Jeep Patriot may be the lowest-priced SUV that can take on off-roading with solid confidence, but there are very few things to consider while buying apart from these two. The SUV has not been updated for a while now, and its future looks bleak too. Also, the rivals offer a lot more sophistication, and although they cost more, it’s worth the investment.
