2016 Lexus LS 460 Review

There have been no major changes made to the Lexus LS 460 and it still carries the same engine options from the previous year's model. With the RWD setup, the engine provides a higher power output as compared with the AWD setup.

In the ever-evolving market of luxury vehicles, which is dominated primarily by the big-shot German brands, Lexus has proven its feat in building excellent luxury vehicles and has its own set of customers. The Lexus LS 460 is a full-size luxury sedan brought to the segment back in 1989 and has been Lexus’ flagship vehicle since. The sedan comes with a standard V8 motor in two states of tune and also comes with an extended wheelbase variant as well.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The Lexus LS 460 is offered in two trim levels, a Base trim, and an extended wheelbase L trim. Both the trims are offered with a standard RWD layout and an AWD layout. The AWD-equipped variants come with a reduced power output while the RWD variant sees the same power figure in both the trims. The price for the base trim starts at $72,520 for the RWD variant and comes in an extremely well-appointed form right out from the dealership.

The top-end L trim comes with all the features of the base trim and adds all the optional features of the base trim as standard. There are some extensive packages on offer to further pack the car with features. The All Weather package adds headlamp washers and a wiper de-icer, the latter is standard in AWD models. The Ultra Luxury package equips the sedan with four-zone climate control, a refrigerated rear center console, six-way power rear seats with heating, cooling, and massage functions, rear-seat side airbags, and rear audio controls.

We Recommend

We would recommend you to opt for the Base trim and further equip it with some packages such as the Ultra Luxury Package and the All Weather Package. If you truly desire a supremely comfortable sedan with acres of legroom and wouldn’t mind shelling out more for that reason alone, you can go for the L trim.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The Lexus LS 460 is powered by a big 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8 motor. By default, the motor generates a maximum of 386 horsepower and 367lb-ft of torque. The power figures are quite decent for the segment and provide an effortless driving experience.

However, since the sedan is designed to offer maximum comfort and excellent ride quality, the acceleration is on the slower side for an average V8-powered luxury vehicle and the 0-60mph can be accomplished by the sedan within 6.1 seconds. The motor remains extremely refined and silent at all speeds, it is barely audible from inside the cabin. The 8-speed automatic transmission does a good job of keeping the motor relaxed and staying at the right gear at all given times.

The BMW 740i has a significantly low power output but has an equal torque output as the LS 460. Owing to its efficient design of the powertrain and the twin-turbocharging, the overall performance is better than the LS 460. The Jaguar XJ comes with a slightly better power output than the BMW 740i but has the least torque output among the rivals on the list.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Luxury sedans are generally less fuel-efficient than compact or midsize sedans owing to their big powertrains and high power and torque figures. But with the advancement in technology, modern luxury sedans have also become quite fuel efficient without compromising on performance.

The Lexus LS 460 seems to be left out in terms of offering a good fuel economy rating. That being said, the sedan returns a mediocre city mileage of 16mpg and a highway mileage of 24mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 19mpg.

The BMW 740i has an excellent fuel economy rating considering its luxury sedan status. It benefits from a smaller powertrain and an efficient engine design with a modern forced-induction system. The Jaguar XJ also offers a marginally better fuel economy rating than the LS 460 but it is a bit disappointing since its power figures fall short in front of the LS 460.

Interior
8.5/10

Stepping inside the LS 460 feels like teleporting into a world of comfort and luxury via those power-closing big rear doors. The cabin is laden with super high-quality materials, extensive use of leather along with high-quality vinyl, and tasteful contrast stitching throughout. The wood trims are carefully crafted into the interior panels along with premium metallic trims as well.

The cabin definitely feels like a nice place to spend a long time but its rivals offer a more stylish and opulent cabin. The seats are extremely luxurious with excellent headroom and legroom for both the front and rear passengers. The power adjustments for the front driver and passenger seats are quite handy and allow the driver to find just the perfect driving position.

The BMW 740i is more spacious and stylish on the inside than the LS 460 and offers an opulent cabin with an abundance of creature comfort features. The Jaguar XJ has a stylish yet elegant cabin that screams British engineering from every angle. The comfort levels are at par with the LS 460 and the 740i sedans.

Infotainment

The infotainment system of the 2016 Lexus LS 460 is quite feature rich and intuitive to use but has a cluttered layout, making it difficult to access while driving. The system comes with a standard horizontally oriented 12.3-inch display that can be controlled via the Lexus Remote Touch interface mounted on the center stack.

Other standard features include a navigation system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, Lexus Safety Connect emergency communications, the Lexus Enform suite of smartphone-integrated apps and the Siri Eyes Free interface. The basics are also covered by including a standard 10-speaker sound system including a CD player, HD radio, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB port and a media player interface.

Highlighted infotainment features of the LS 460 are:

  • Lexus Safety Connect
  • 12.3-inch display
  • Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity
  • Siri Eyes Free
  • Satellite radio
  • HD radio
  • 10-speaker sound system

Exterior
9.9/10

The 2016 Lexus LS 460 comes with Lexus’ new spindle front grille design that grabs a fair deal of attention when standing beside its rivals.

Other than that, the sedan comes with the brand’s older "L-finesse" design language that suits the corporate world perfectly. There are some smooth and sculpted lines on the hood and the rear-end looks stately with a pair of big taillights and dual chrome exhaust tips.

Safety
7.0/10

The Lexus LS 460 comes with the best possible safety rating of “Good” from the IIHS but the NHTSA hasn’t rated this sedan yet. That being said, the sedan comes with a myriad of safety aids that helps to keep the occupants safe at all times.

The standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, front knee airbags, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera. Final Verdict

The LS 460 sedan is equipped with some of the best luxury features in the market and comes with a plush cabin to offer maximum comfort while traveling. It does come with a powerful V8 motor with decent performance but its sub-par fuel economy might be a concern for some buyers. It suits the corporate crowd the most owing to its formal design language and is quite a head-turner with its new spindle grille design.
