About 2016 Tesla Model X electric

4.2

Overall Rating

The 2016 Tesla Model X Electric SUV provides quality aerodynamics and enhanced and improved performance with a spacious interior and intuitive tech features.

The 2016 Tesla Model X was the first fully electric 3-row SUV on the market. Based on the Tesla Model S sedan, the new Model X offers over 230 miles of driving range and Tesla’s  “Autopilot” system. Available in three trim levels, the SUV comes in an all-wheel-drive layout and boasts the brand's signature power “Falcon Wing” rear doors. The entry-level Model X 75D starts from $85,500 while the P90D performance model costs $115,500.

The new Telsa Model X trims have major differences in terms of range and acceleration times, starting with the 238-mile 75D to 257 miles 90D. Mostly all the features are available with any of the three trims. The engine choice depends on how fast and far you want to go. The Tesla Model X is at the epitome of blistering acceleration and incomparable energy efficiency with no fully electric SUV rivals. Though most automakers offer plug-in hybrid or hybrid cars.

Even though the Tesla Model X comes in three very interesting trims, it is better to stick with the base trim, the 75D since it offers all the essential features while providing a decent acceleration and being somewhat affordable in comparison to the other trims of the SUV.

Engine and Performance
9.2/10

The 2016 Tesla Model X SUV comes equipped with two Electric direct-drive motors, with the 75D getting an EPA-rated at a range of 238 miles. Tesla claims 0 to 60 mph acceleration time to be 6 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph. Opting for a bigger 90-kWh battery pack, the Model X 90D's acceleration time reduces to 4.8 seconds, with a top speed rising to 155 mph.

This version has the highest range among any Model X, at 257 miles, and has 518 total horsepower. The top-of-the-line P90D performance model has an output of 762 hp (259 hp front, 503 hp rear) and offers 250 miles of range and the 0-to-60-mph time falls to 3.2 seconds.

From the table, it is evident that the Tesla Model X offers a decent power output in its base form when compared to its rivals but offers the maximum torque owing to its dual-motor configuration. In addition, the Model X also impresses with its smooth and swift acceleration which is best in the segment. The Porsche Cayenne SE provides the maximum power output and it is also quite fast but it is the Volvo XC90 that disappoints with its acceleration and power ratings.

Fuel Economy
9.9/10

The Tesla Model X gets the EPA rated efficiency of 93, 92, and 89 MPGe for the 75D, 90D, and P90D versions respectively. For the respective Model X versions, the battery range ratings are 238, 257, and 250 miles. For a full-size SUV with such a heavyweight, the Model X is remarkably economical. It has also been speculated that the 2016 Tesla Model X will be of remarkable use of energy and once charged, it will provide double the mileage that is expected from a gasoline engine.

In its base form, the Tesla Model X delivers a decent driving range and it is quite acceptable considering the fact that it is an EV. The Volvo XC90 hybrid offers a decent overall driving range of 350 miles and respectable mpg ratings given its luxury SUV status. The Porsche Cayenne SE Hybrid offers the most impressive driving range of 480 miles here which is almost double the range that the Model X can offer with its biggest battery pack.

Interior
8.4/10

When it is a Tesla vehicle, one can be sure that the interior is going to be attractive and technologically advanced, and the 2016 Tesla Model X proves the same. The interior is not only attractive in the most conventional sense, but it derives from conventions with their use of imitation leather and microfiber fabrics, obeche wood insets, and soft-touch plastic surfaces, which gives a very posh appearance to the interior.

Additionally, the cabin is well lit and is filled with interesting technologies as one would expect from a Tesla. The 2016 Tesla Model X Electric SUV can accommodate 5 people with the utmost comfort even though the rear seats might be a little uncomfortable. The Tesla Model X further provides 26 cubic feet of cargo, which mostly becomes impractical with the presence of a large battery in the rear.

Exterior
8.0/10

Tesla cars are easily distinguishable, and the 2016 Tesla Model X Electric SUV is quite innovative in its styling but the exterior fails to look graceful and elegant in comparison to how it was intended to look. The 2016 Tesla Model X has no slab sides, no vertical tailgate, but instead, it features a tall hatchback shape with a canted rear window in the tailgate and a body that narrows considerably toward the roof above the base of the windows. This styling makes the model look awkward.

Coming to the front, Tesla has dispensed the grilles panel, and in its place lies the narrow, flat horizontal panel with a slight V incised into it for the base of the Tesla logo on its nose badge. In terms of its size, the 2016 Tesla Model X Electric SUV is quite heavy and its weight is somewhat manifested in its big size.

The Porsche Cayenne SE comes second in terms of its weight and it also provides the maximum ground clearance, whereas it is the Volvo XC90 which is not only the smallest car in the segment but also the lightest one offering the maximum wheelbase. Tesla Model X vs Volvo XC90 hybrid

Both the vehicles do excel in two not-so-different worlds and the Tesla Model X has managed to gain a major share of the attention owing to its technological quirks and features an example being the Falcon rear doors. Being an EV in the luxury crossover SUV segment, the Model X carries a decent price tag for its features while the Volvo XC90 rules with its reliability and practicality. Performance is not really the XC90's forte and that is where the Model X becomes an enthusiast's favorite.

Tesla Model X vs Porsche Cayenne SE hybrid

The Porsche Cayenne is a true luxury SUV and in its hybrid form, it entices even more with some respectable fuel efficiency figures as well. On the practical aspect, it holds its ground as a utility vehicle and has a praiseworthy cabin to boast about. It is also a brilliant performer but the Model X equipped with the higher capacity battery and motors manages to outrun it in every aspect butt the Cayenne remains undefeated when it comes to offering the best overall driving range.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Tesla Model X Electric SUV is a unique, all-electric SUV, which provides an exhilarating acceleration and an impressive performance. Additionally, its interior is quite flexible and is going to accommodate its occupants quite comfortably. But on the flip side, the 2016 Tesla Model X might not be in accordance with everyone’s taste and therefore it might need a few more years to establish itself as the future of cars.
