Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2016 Toyota Corolla is available for sale in six trim levels: L, LE, LE Eco, S, Special Edition, and LE Premium with the addition of the new S Special Edition trim. You'll want to skip the base Toyota Corolla L as it lacks most creature comforts but it still includes cool features like an infotainment system, but it lacks a rearview camera.

The Corolla S and LE Eco trims are the two specialty models in the lineup. With the S trim, you get a unique set of features like paddle shifters and a separate Sport drive mode that firms up the steering and quickens throttle response for the enthusiasts, while the LE Eco has been optimized to extract the best fuel economy figures from the car.

That said, the LE trim can be had with the navigation and HD Radio as an option while the S Special Edition trim also gets the App Suite & navigation along with a sunroof as an optional add-on.

Buying Advice

The 2016 Toyota Corolla has offered a lot of trim options to choose from but it is the S trim that adds the most value.

It features a leather steering wheel, sport front seats, leatherette upholstery, sport driving mode, and also has an option to add the Convenience package as an option. For budget-minded buyers, the frugal LE Eco model makes more sense with its improved aerodynamics and frugal engine tune.

Engine and Performance
6.0/10

The 2016 Toyota Corolla remains mechanically unchanged this year. The standard 1.8-liter inline-4 cylinder engine generates 132-hp along with 128 lb-ft of torque powerful enough for daily driving. This engine is available on all the trims except the LE Eco trim. The LE Eco trim gets a slightly more powerful 1.8-liter inline-4 cylinder engine that generates 140 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque.

The performance and driving dynamics of the Corolla 2016 focus on offering a comfortable and composed ride. Performance is adequate as a daily driver, but you won't find any sportiness in this car. The higher-powered engine is mated with the continuously variable transmission, while the base engine gets a 6-speed manual as standard with an optional 4-speed automatic for the L trim.

The Toyota Corolla with its base engine provides a 0-60 mph acceleration of 8.5 seconds with the manual, while the CVT automatic adds over a second to the timing. It shows a similar case with the quarter-mile run, taking under 17 seconds with the manual and adding over a second and a half when opting for the CVT automatic.

In comparison, both the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra manage to beat the Toyota Corolla in both power and torque output by offering 158hp and 138 lb-ft of torque. Yet both are almost equally quick as the Corolla 2016. The Nissan Sentra offers similar engine output as that of Toyota, but is painstakingly slow even with the manual transmission.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The 2016 Toyota Corolla delivers decent fuel economy ratings and seems to live up to them in real-world use, though there's no hybrid option. That technology is reserved for the Prius family, which now offers three different small and medium body styles.

The 1.8L engine in its standard guise returns 28 MPG in the city, 37 MPG on the highway, and 31 MPG combined. However, the more efficient LE Eco model gets you 30/42/35 MPG in city/highway/combined as per EPA. With a 13.2-gallon fuel tank on offer, the 2016 Corolla offers a 400-mile range in most scenarios.

When it comes to the most fuel-efficient among the three cars, Toyota Corolla takes the top spot with a maximum combined fuel economy of 35 MPG. The Civic and Elantra offers a similar combined MPG rating as the standard Corolla 2016, but the Civic is more frugal out on the highways. The Nissan Sentra is again the sore loser here, but only by a small margin.

Interior
7.7/10

The 2016 Toyota Corolla interior can seat up to five people. In terms of design, it looks modern and quite stylish as per modern-day commuter car standards. The interior design focuses more on practicality offering button and knob controls along with ample storage options. Corolla's interior adopts a two-tier dashboard design that also adds to the impression of interior space. The dash surface itself is a soft-touch material with molded-in stitching, along with a handful of subtle pinstripe accents in contrasting colors on the dash and door panels.

Sit in one of its front seats, and you'll be treated with plenty of comfort and support. Belying its compact car designation, the Corolla also offers excellent rear legroom. However, taller riders may itch for more headroom in the second row, but then that's the case with most compact sedans. Based on the trim, the 2016 Corolla can be had in 3 different upholstery color choices. The 13 cu-ft of trunk space is enough to haul 3 full-size luggage and with the rear seats folded, one can make way for more cargo if needed.

While the 2016 Corolla might offer a smaller trunk, the rear-seat legroom is on par with the midsize sedan segment. Both the Civic and Nissan Sentra offer a spacious cabin and a larger trunk while the Elantra loses out on rear-seat legroom but offers a larger trunk.

Unlike some rivals, the 2016 Toyota Corolla comes standard with a touch-screen infotainment system.

The 6.1-inch touchscreen is quite small in size but intuitive to use. The higher trims get smartphone integration with the infotainment along with Siri Eyes Free voice control system for iPhone. The interface is easy to use, with quick response times, large buttons, and a straightforward menu structure. Available features include satellite radio, HD Radio, and navigation. Few key interior features include:

  • Heated Front Seats w/leatherette upholstery
  • Ambient interior lighting and Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Automatic climate control
  • 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system w/6-speaker audio system
  • AM/FM Stereo and Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player, MP3 Player, & Smartphone integration
  • Satellite radio & Navigation

Exterior
7.5/10

Toyota calls the exterior design of the 2016 Toyota Corolla as more athletic, and says, it's an example of "Iconic Dynamism"—make of that what you will. We see bits and pieces of other compact sedans in both the overall shape and some of the finer details. Derivative Dynamism might be more accurate, but that's not really a put-down. The current model does what it needs to while avoiding the generic look of so many previous Corollas.

The design is finished off with new details like LED headlamps and running lamps. If the car comes with a blacked-out grille, it's the sportier Corolla S model. Similarly, the LE and LE Eco models now have a grille that's more distinct from the base Corolla L model. Toyota offers a total of 7 paint color options with the Corolla 2016 to choose from and offers alloy wheels only on the top two trims, with the 5.5-inch ground clearance remaining standard.

The 2016 Toyota Corolla is quite light in terms of the curb weight at 2800 pounds. All the vehicles have similar exterior dimensions and thus a similar footprint on road, the Hyundai Elantra being the shortest. That said, it is the quirky design language of the Honda Civic that will get the most attention on the streets in this segment.

Here is a list of the exterior features that are available with the 2016 Toyota Corolla:

  • LED low-beam headlights
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Color-keyed outside door handles and mirrors
  • Alloy wheels
  • Fog Lamps (optional)
  • Sunroof/moonroof (optional)

Safety
9.2/10

The 2016 Toyota Corolla has been rated highly in its safety crash tests. The car received a perfect overall 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA and also earned the highest score of 'Good' in most aspects of the tests by IIHS. A rearview camera is the only driver assistance feature available in the 2016 Corolla. It’s standard in every trim but the base model. You won't find any advanced safety technologies, like forward collision warning, automatic braking, lane departure warning, or lane keep assist. Major safety features include-

  • Rearview camera
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control

Competition
6.0/10

2016 Toyota Corolla vs 2016 Honda Civic

While the 2016 Civic gets a more powerful engine, it isn't particularly quicker than the Corolla. That said, the Civic is more fun to drive, is more frugal, and offers a larger trunk. Both Honda and Toyota are reliable and have lost ownership costs, but the 2016 Corolla offers a more spacious rear seat and has a lower price, making it the more attractive offering.

2016 Toyota Corolla vs 2016 Hyundai Elantra

The Elantra is priced similarly to the Corolla and also has a very similar performance to offer. Both again are equally frugal and have high-reliability ratings. That said, the Corolla 2016 offers a more spacious and more stylish cabin to offer. Unless you need the higher list of technology offered by Elantra, Corolla offers more value since it also gets high resale value.

2016 Toyota Corolla vs 2016 Nissan Sentra

Though Nissan Sentra has a lower starting MSRP, the Corolla is quicker and more frugal. The Sentra offers a larger trunk, but the Corolla gets a commodious and practical cabin. The build quality and material quality are better in the Toyota, and it is also more reliable in the long run, making it the obvious choice between the two.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Toyota Corolla is fuel-efficient, comfortable to drive, and its cabin provides ample seating space for adults in both rows. The 2016 Corolla is also rated highly for reliability and has low running costs. That said, the Corolla isn’t a particularly fun car to drive it also lacks modern driver aids. Still, the compact sedan is worthy of consideration in the segment for all budget family car buyers.
